1931 John Deere D pulling aspen tree stumps
We had 2 aspen stumps to remove in the front yard, so I decided it was time to give the D a run. Had to fight wasps, of course. And yes, the sprinkler riser didn't survive...

Has not run since the winter of 1949. I have had this tractor for over 40 years, & it always got set on the back burner for other projects...it was time to hear her run. For the unbelievably sharp-eyed genius types who see that the flywheel rim is shiny, YES! I know that! I rebuilt the engine, and in the process turned the flywheel over MANY TIMES! And lo and behold, it got shiny!!! Go figure!!...
How old are y
We sometimes had to resort to pull-starting our A's and D's. The D's have been long gone, but still have a few A's to look at.
Lol…scene from the film, “Office Space” and their fax machine that kept messing up. 😅
Nice old D
GET A TR I P O D ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A man may have to pack his lunch to start that ol tractor. Lol
Love these old relics.
Fartin' ol' dinosaur! I had to pull start my '39 F-20 the first time, until I figured out I had the mag in the wrong hole.
(Posted by Rick Pickell) Just doing the math. This old girl had worked 18 years before it was parked. Still J.D. tractors are reliable equipment.
Great job! Thanks for such an amazing video!
3:10 the tractor TIME TO SHINE!!!
Who else has actually started one
its whisper quiet
"Loud pipes save lives..."
today I found that there are 3 Model D tractors, 1 Model A tractor, 1 Model B tractor, 1 Model GP tractor, and a Model C (experimental) tractor in my neigbourhood except they are all rusted and seized
Being stuck isn't necessarily fatal. It took about 2 or 3 years to get the pistons out of this tractor, it had sat for about 20 years before I got it.
@@ronm9933 how difficult was it to remove the pistons in the 1931 D?
@@ronm9933 UPDATE: I looked at the serial number on the one completed model D and the number was 113969 which then, I looked on tractordata and it had to have been somewhere between 1931 and 1932 but I passed it off as a 1931 model D which I hope to find the owner of it and take it home as my own project to work on in my spare time
Those old should love old gas they have very low compression
Actually kerosene or distillates are what they were designed to burn.
Good old Johnny popper
That D deserves some TLC, or some engine work, and leave in the original patina
That D has had TLC to even be running, & the engine is all new...it wasn't running the best that day due to old gas in the tank. The gas we get now goes bad almost instantly...Yes, it will stay like it is, that's the way I want it.
@@ronm9933 ohh I see! I bet she runs like a clock when she has good fuel
@@ronm9933 Although a bit expensive, Aviation fuel does not draw moisture or go bad in short order. Try and find Premium minus the Ethanol and add a gallon of Av Gas to 5 of Ethanol free.
Yes, I know about avgas...
great
my granny was birth in 1949
still have blisters? I have 2 tractors 63 ford commander 6000 an 39 farmall 14. the 14 is hand start only. This next year I'm getting a 39 JD A. This will be my wife's. You know as well as others that there is something to the sound to a hand start tractor that you just have to love. Just like a old Harley Davidson. Thank you for sharing an bringing it back to life. I saw post you had a leak with it hope you have found the time to get it regoing. Best of Luck.
Well then! Got the old thing moving!
The question now is "Will it MOVE?"
Look at the latest video on my channel...
Just listen too those two cylinders pumping 😋
Sounds lovely
Awesome engine. John Deere is great quality machinery.
I have a friend with 2 Deere that start with the wheel. I had no idea how they worked until he made me turn the wheel, looks way easier than it is.
Hey! That's pretty dang good for an ol' tractor! Awesome job getting it up and running! Well done, Ron! Those wasps need a little sip of bug juice, though.
awesome
Well done with TLC .That was some compression. She was huffing & puffing , than she was breathing. More videos on driving it. Please Sir.Be safe and well. Thank you. Shiiiii!.
I rebuilt a Buick V8 engine in an MGB, the joy of the first start is magic. Love the noise of this old JD.
Out-freekin'-STANDING!!! Been there, done that .... got the "shiny flywheel"! Hahaha! Anyone who'd bitch about resurrecting this jewel has never had to sling the flywheel on a JD - and rip a fingerprint off when it DID cough to life in a cloud of smoke .... {;^) I'm sure that by now you have it tuned to perfection, painted SHINY green and you're using it in the summer a little to keep it limbered up. Youngsters can't do this stuff like us "old farts" can - keep up the great work!!
U made it BRAVO!!!
Call me bro 7004293835
Super bhai
There is nothing like an ol’ Johnny Popper!!
This next generation has lost contact with the past - they don't know how to use dial telephones, record players, can openers, and many many other things. I'm 72, and this item is old for me. It we don't keep history alive, we will lose it! What you're doing is very important for us all - for America!!!!
Thanks. I grew up around these tractors, actually played on this exact tractor when I was a kid. It's good to be able to preserve a few of them.
Nice job, good to see she still lives.
Listen to that sweet 2 cylinder making music. Love it! Thanks for sharing.
Imagine how early your day started, an how early bedtime was back then. I mean, youd have to show up to the farm an hour early just to get the equipment running not to mention when it was 10 degrees out with a foot of snow. Hand starting must back been real a real chore haha. But back then to them, this was state of the art.
Wow! What a moment-I would have done a Doctor Frankenstein: "It lives! It lives!" Great video; thanks.
That was awesome! To anybody who doesn't believe this wasn't your first start: check out your reaction at 3:10. That first BARK when it starts would have given me a heart attack. And also your final comments just about sum it up... what a beautiful sound. Keep up the great work.
Good workout too - who needs the gym?!
Beautiful, love it
Nothing like the sound of an old project finally lighting off

OK, you're gone.
ronm99 you do understand it’s a joke right.
Yeah, don't beat it to death...
No need to be afraid of it.. jumping back like it will bite you.. lol
Hey, they NEVER fire on the first turn...wasn't ready for that surprise...
VERY nice work kind sir!
That's awesome
Suddenly I appreciate electric start
Just for the s' and g's that flywheel looks nice and shiny :)
Had to push your luck, didn't you?
ronm99 just messing around pal. I love these old machines. Unfortunately you're pay upwards of £300,000 in the uk
