    Culturing amphipods outside in a covered large tub or bucket is my recommendation. Add lava rock or gravel, toss in an old sponge filter, add a washed piece of organic vegetables- lettuce works well, and a culture of the buggies. Given a few weeks and your population will explode. Harvest regularly and feel comfortable gut loading them. (Having multiple cultures is recommended as they can crash) no air pump or heater is needed. I don’t think they can survive being frozen outside but they can tolerate a lot!

    • @cowfishpro
      @cowfishpro Před měsícem

      @@PotooBurd those are great ideas. I’m curious if you actually do this. I used to do it with copepods but then the whole culture was destroyed because it got too hot outside. Where I live now we’ve been having record heat waves so that wouldn’t work for me right now. I am curious if you do do this, how are you able to collect what you need.

    • @PotooBurd
      @PotooBurd Před měsícem

      @@cowfishpro When raising fry I float a deli cup (with tiny holes made with a pin) and add my daphnia, only the tiny daphnia and moina can get out ( the natural flow will slowly disperse them) I don’t see how this wouldn’t work with amphipods and copepods. (Maybe poke larger holes for the scuds?) The adults continue to feed and reproduce. To keep the deli cup from sinking you can secure it with fishing line through one of the holes and tape the string to the outside of the tank. To collect and separate adults from smaller scuds I use a standard fish net with a brine shrimp net / reusable stainless coffee filter. Then I turkey baster them and feed. Bummer about the heat at your area. I keep 5 gallon buckets of daphnia magna, moina, and scuds. I have 2 larger cultures outside one in a shady place and one with limited sunlight. For food- I’ve had the best luck with giving them 1 (organic) piece of veggie at a time, (green beans, broccoli, carrots) they benefit greatly from green water. to make green water with no culture ,I take the mulm from my sponge filter and crush up organic boiled broccoli, or green beans and put it a covered (I cut a clear food delivery bag and bull dog clip it to the rim) place the 5 gallon bucket in a place that gets partial sun. Mix daily or every other day (i keep a stick near them to stir it up) the benefit of green water is that it’s harder to over feed… The majority of my losses came from over feeding, and over population. Once I had to restart everything from just a few scuds in my main tank- it took a month to recover the cultures back to a harvestable level. As for supplies I get my substrate from hardware stores, they are sold in big 25-50lbs bags at a good price. Sand, gravel, lava rock, river stones. Just rinse them thoroughly and they are good to go. I also get the 5 gallon buckets from the hardware store.

      @@PotooBurd sounds interesting and very doable. I’m trying to keep things pretty simple right now because I anticipate in my future I will have baby horses that I will attempt to raise. So that will require more time and space. I’m experimenting right now with keeping those mesh bath scrubbing pads in my sump. A lot of the scuds seem to end up in my sump. So I thought why not just let them collect and reproduce in the bath, scrubbing pads, and then shake them out when I’m ready to add some back into the main tank. I may do a video on it. But I think you’re right, I tried setting up a culture in a 20 gallon long and I think it got either overfed or overpopulated because it wasn’t able to continue.

      @@MegaMaddydog anything live added to the tank is a potential risk. This includes macro algae, peppermint shrimp, ghost shrimp, cleaner shrimp, copepods, amphipods, live sand, or live rock. It is a matter of weighing the risk against the longevity of the Seahorses. Usually, if you can order from reliable sources that tend to have clean, cured or cultured offerings, that is best. But it is not always possible. Although it is not a complete answer, I do have some comfort that I have an ultraviolet sterilizer on my aquarium. The cleaner shrimp help with removing parasites from the Seahorses and keeping up sea horse health provides them an immune system that works against potential bacteria or parasites.
