The inspiration for my tune "Where Spirits Whisper" came after a binge watching session of a few great Asian supernatural horror movies. What a small world; I just discovered the Dead South, thanks to CZcams's algorithm. Fun cover!
Fun tune; I'm scared... Nice harmonies. Interesting that you're using the two different zouks, instead of just one played twice. Does this mean that you don't have a favourite, or that they have different "uses"? I've been trying to decide between these 2, but you've solved this dilemma - get both! For haunting/ghost stories, "The Haunting of Hill House" is quite good. It's a series, and is told very well. Another recent one is "You Should Have Left".
Thank you! The 2 zouks are actually tuned differently from each other, the one on the left has all the courses tuned in unison, the one on the right has the top 2 courses in octaves. They're different animals, especially from a creative standpoint, so I usually switch between the two and pick which one best suits the part I'm trying to play best. Thanks for the suggestion, I've heard really good things about that series and movie!
@@brentmatusikmusic Thanks. I knew the Carvalho had some octaves. When you say top, is it the the two lower courses, pitchwise? In any case, I'm leaning heavily toward the Thomann. I was prepared to convert one course to unisons, but two courses... Thanks for your music. Your an inspiration to us mando types wanting to try bouzouki.
@CelticMandoDude the Carvalho actually also came unison, but I got it converted And yes, it would be the Low G and D strings that are octaved
Absolute class break down- thank you!
Just bought my first Irish Bouzouki - waiting for it to be mailed… I think this will be my first song… I’ll stick to the 100 bpm though !!! Missus is going to strangle me for buying yet another instrument (4 basses 6 ukuleles one guitar 😂)
Hi, I’m a long time bass player in rock bands mostly, sometimes blues and punk rock too. I added the ukulele to my quiver recently (couple of years ago) and it has done me much good. It is so nice to play the ukulele everywhere, at any time. So easy to play. But I’m totally struck by the Irish bouzouki I am just discovering. This sounds so glorious, so bright, so cheerful and sad at the same time. This appeals to me deeply. You play it with great mastery. I don’t know how much longer I can refrain from buying a second hand one.
Well eventually I got an honorable Hora and your video is my first step into Irish folk music and the Bouzouki. So far so good - so much to learn
Very nice. Any chance you can do Daori's rendition of Foggy Dew?
Just been to see Daoiri for first time in my home town. I loved hearing him play this tune, especially. I have tuned my mandolin to these notes as l'm leaning that instrument at moment but have been offered a bouzoukar. It has octave paired low strings G and D. Should l change strings to same pitch or keep for that sound?
That's awesome! Seeing Daoiri live is definitely on my bucket list, hopefully he comes closer to my neck of the woods one of these days... As far as the octave vs unison tuning, it's really a matter of preference. If you want to stay more true to the original song, you'd want the string courses to be tuned in unison. However, I did play this song on my other Bouzouki with the G and D octaved, and it still sounded great, just different. I'd try it first octaved and see if that's your flavour.
Andy Irvine has bouzouki with octave G and D strings but others with all unison courses. l wondered which version was the more commonly preferred amongst the great exponents. Octave strings seem harder to play to beginners like myself. Ushers Island came to Bury recently and l finally got to meet Irvine, who l never saw in Planxty days😢.Always loved that band, but now Daori, half Andy's age, carries on the wonderful tradition.😊😊😊
Awesome
Sweet playing. What make of bouzouki do you use?
Thank you! It's a Hora Irish Concert Bouzouki
@@brentmatusikmusic I heard a lot of recommendations for that particular brand. They seem very justified. If I may ask you - how link have you you been playing?
@@jantonisito I've been playing Bouzouki for about 2 years
@@brentmatusikmusic That is remarkable - are you coming from mandolin or perhaps guitar playing?
@jantonisito thanks! I definitely hit the ground running: I'm going on 17 years of playing guitar, and I did dabble (poorly) with the Mandolin in the past
Both are great! I'd happily take either, so I have to say well done for having both
r u serous?
Yet another AMAZING lesson!!! Thank you so much,Brent!
Absolutely brilliant!!! Thank you so much for this AMAZING lesson, much appreciated!
This tutorial was great! Do you think this song can be played on the mandolin? I haven't found anyone on CZcams playing it.
Thank you! You would need to tune the mandolin GDAD, as this song utilizes the open D on the high string a ton. Other than that, it could definitely be done!
Wouldn’t it be better to show the notes and chords relative to the Capo position.
I did that to help educate people on the actual chords/notes being played in this song, rather than relying on the capo as a crutch.
Hi Brent, thank you so much for this great tutorial. Would it be possible to share the GP file (I assume it is Guitar Pro) with us? It would be great to have a larger view on the tabs…
Very nicely played !!’ Good show!!
I like both, actually. Do you know of any examples where the octave strings are an octave lower rather than an octave higher?
Likewise! I can't say I've heard of any examples, but that could be very cool. I guess the only issue that may present itself is the string spacing: the string courses are very close together, so putting a heavy gauge string to accommodate the super low tuning might make it rattle against the regular string.
Get rid of backing track
Is there any chance of getting the transcript of Creggan White hare
why arent you naming the chords relative to the nut instead of the capo? are you nuts? also this does not sound much like whay iaori farrell does
This is so good to hear side by side! Can you tune a single bouzouki in either unison or octave? Or is the set-up completely different; different sized strings, or strength of the neck, etc...
Thanks for watching! Yes, technically any Bouzouki can be tuned either way, however, each tuning requires different string gauges. You would need to ensure the nut and bridge is cut correctly to fit the string gauges.
Very nice. 👍
What brand do you recommend as a starter bouzouki? I’ve been playing guitar, bass, and uke for years
The Hora Irish Concert Bouzouki I'm using in the video has served me well, but for a similar price point, the Mcneela Irish Bouzouki is supposed to be quite a bit better. Hope that helps!
Thank-you! My intro is getting 'just about acceptable' so I might start on this now...
Right on! Keep it up!
Very cool instrument!
Please do a walkthrough and lesson of this please 🙏
excellent tutorial thanks for sharing this great tune!
Very nice mate
Delighted to find your channel. Had given up as finding hard to build the basics. Most places ive found are either too basic or too advanced. Yours is just right. Looking forward to more tutorials. Great work sounding like Daoirí also 👏
Is that all being played live or is something playing alongside?
I recorded 2 Bouzouki rhythm tracks and the bass for the backing, I'm playing the lead melody/solo live
Should have realised! Sounds great. Just bought one and learning. Struggling with that pinkie!! Hopefully it will work in time.
@@berlum1 Thank you! Keep it up!
How are you getting on with learning? I’m thinking of getting one myself to learn
Thank you so much for this. I so thoroughly enjoyed learning this song. You are the ONLY artist on CZcams that does excellent breakdowns for Bouzouki novices. I have learned so much through your videos. Do you think you could please, PLEASE do a tutorial on Daoiri Ferrel's Little Drummer Boy? I love that song and would love to learn it. Cheers !
Hey, thank you for the great feedback! I've had several requests for it, we're getting dangerously close to me doing it, haha
@@brentmatusikmusic do you have a pattern or Venmo that I could donate to?
@@maximiliancostello288 I appreciate that! At this moment, I do not, but it's something I'll be working towards setting up in the New Year

Thank you! 🍻 🫡
Great lesson, nice tone, what gauge strings are you using?
Thanks! I use the D'addario J81 set, 11-40
@@brentmatusikmusic I have that same instrument and thinking of using a set 13 18 32 42 the 18 being a wound string, not sure if it would be too much tension
@@bobbyboydeke1 The increase in tension would be pretty substantial, but the playability is very subjective. Some players prefer it when the strings have almost no give. It's something you have to experiment with and make your own judgements about!
Nice! both tunings are nice for different scenarios. what's the model of carvhalo?
I agree! It's a Carvahlo PTB308, with a Cedar top (they also make one with a Spruce top)
Amazing, thank-you! I can't wait to even get it up to the slow speed. I've only really strummed so far... just gotta keep drilling that picking pattern!
Lol so damn good man. What strings and tuning are you using? Been trying to find time to learn my bouzouki. Sounds so crisp!
Thank you! I use the D'addario J81 Irish Bouzouki set for strings, and I use standard Irish Bouzouki tuning, GDAD (unison)
wish you had a music CD i would buy it your a very good player well done that man
Thank you for the kind words! More music in the works!
Top class,to say the least
Each tuning seems to have their own charm, for me I like Unison better because of the clearer sound. Octave is more "fun-sounding". Are the two bouzoukis different sized? When you say tunning, what do you mean? (sorry I'm not well-versed in guitars)
Yes, the octave one is a bit bigger than the unison tuned Bouzouki. "Tuning" refers to the pitch/note that each string is adjusted to match.
Very vivid jig :)
Found your channel out today, really liking your performances :)
Go hálainn!!
