The casting of these two roles could not have been done better. I admire these two actors. Perfect for these roles.

Vinnick never said NO to President-Elect Santos…he seemed to be trying to talk the President out of it but he failed and took the job. When your country calls you…you answer..

Vinick getting immediately into "secretary of State" mode shows that he actually a) wants the job and b) will be an amazing one

Partisan politics needs to stop at the Border. From that point, Democrats and Republicans should be civil...and hopefully there would be a President and Congress that could work together.

One of my favorite scenes on an outstanding show

Oh God, the smug liberals' wet dream, where the division between Democrat and Republican melts away, and the new division is people in Washington (preferably with PhDs) versus everyone else. Where it doesn't matter if your principles or ideology are right or wrong, but whether or not you can make some witty, learned, erudite argument.

Would love to see Smits and Alda going at each other for a season.

I love that we never see the actual Santos administration but it’s hinted at with scenes like this;

The West Wing had an excellent final season. It left with its metaphoric head held high.

Alan Alda is so great as Vinick throughout every episode in which the character appears. It's truly one of the great arcs in any television series ever - and it appears in my favorite series ever. Jimmy Smits, who I've loved as far back as L.A. Law, is amazing as Santos. And scenes such as the Oval Office scene in which Bartlet tells Santos and Vinick he's sending U.S. troops to stand between Russia and China are astoundingly good fiction - fiction ripped from a fictional universe in which elected officials are deeply intelligent and capable and care deeply about our country, and the electorate makes thoughtful, good choices.

I swear no show ever moved me as much as the West Wing, but I will always wonder what if.....These two what they could have pulled off for a few seasons...It would have been wonderful.

That's how it should be. Best person for the job. PERIOD.

The inner battle of Vinick is brilliantly on display in the dialogue, as he has a loyalty to the county that supercedes his loyalty to the Party. However, the fact he is known as the least Republican form of Republican makes him want to make sure he isn't disloyal. This battle in the dialogue shows his loyalty to serve the country is more powerful, while not abandoning his principles. If Vinick had won, he would have changed the Republican Party in this world for generations.

I love the scenes before Santos offers him the job. Vinick is so lost without anything to do or anyone to serve. He needed this opportunity just as much if not more than he wanted it.

I would have loved to see a contiuation of the West Wing with Santos and Vinick. :)

Both guys show that they ended up in the right job in this scene. Perfect and really feels season 2 quality.

I love how Vinick told Santos..... to get around this issue, "you're going to have start laying the ground work. now. Let both sides know that in the end game the Russians are going to have to get [the oil] and the Chinese are going to have to get their pipeline." Boy! That is the kind of strategic diplomacy I love to hear in movies about foreign affairs. Can you imagine what is said in the back rooms of the State Department. If only.....

One thing I love about this scene is that, while Santos is making it clear that he's serious about having Vinick be SoS, he's not folding entirely either. It would still be Vinick's job to carry out Santos' decisions, Vinick's hand-picked Deputy Secretary would still have to be a Democrat, and Santos would still have final say over the undersecretaries. It shows that Santos really does want Vinick to do the job, but also wants to do his own dang job at the same time, and there are political realities that would still need to be navigated.

WW was one of my favorite shows of all time. I really like Jimmy Smits and Allen Alda together. It would’ve been interesting to see another couple of seasons.

Perfect scene. Vinick is a bit shell-shocked he's being asked to do such an important job and more so that Santos intends to give him the power and leeway to do the job. Santos gives him that paperwork and Vinick immediately fits into Secretary of State role with ease.

Love the call back to The Supremes' CJ Baker-Lang narrative. Makes the world feel more real and alive.

The West Wing left us all wanting that next season and see who the new staffers would be and how they would handle their new roles.
