Thanks for sharing, Alex! I discovered another video recently where the chap used a spiral point tap (otherwise known as a gun nose tap) as opposed to the spiral flute tap you used. It pushes the swarf out ahead of it, so really better for through holes (such as the ones you did). I tried it out, and it really works wonders! So mu better than the standard 4-flute tap, which leaves "crunchies" inside the hole and leaves a very rough thread. Try one, and you will not be disappointed! They are also much stronger, so can be used in steel without fear of breaking. Cheers!

It's a shame they chose elegance over stability. The data ports (whether on alt data or pogo pins) fail utterly with the slightest bit of interference... Like, any electronics in the vicinity, or USB devices plugged in. A true shame. With this design, it needs shielding to function properly with any reliability. Highest fail rate of any USB hubs I've tried.

What I don't see, though, is a mounting case with a stand to house the resulting solution. Are these on sale, or should they be done by every DIY enthusiast individually ?

I always like the smell of the fluxed solder, but it's the lead fumes that are the problem with leaded solder - avoiding the neurological damage exacerbated by breathing in the fumes is the main issue. But I have to agree that lead-free solder is a right pain to use. Nice instructions in the video, though 👍

The same chip does not necessarily mean the same sound. In my experience, the most important factor is not the DAC itself, but the noise coming into the DAC over the power lines. If you feed the DAC directly from the same power supply that is used for the CPU, then you usually end up with a lot of digital background noise, which significantly hurts the signal-to-noise ratio. Additionally, if the user lowers the volume by -12 dB (for example in KODI), then the background noise can render the audio unusable. Keep this in mind the next time you are testing another converter. Wack up your amplifier volume, play some quiet sounds and listen to the noise floor / distortion etc.

but no one has issues with tapping through a thin piece of acrylic even with regular taps. the problem is when you try to tap through the side of a 1/2-inch plexiglass without going all the way through. then that son of a gun cracks everywhere...

Just a little question. You said you had two laptops die from overheating. How is that possible? Laptops throttle when they get too hot, and shut down when necessary way before any real damage is done. How did the defects show themselves? I mean absolutely no respect with this, I just work in IT for a few years and never heard of a laptop that "died from overheating". Now I'm a little bit concerned about my daily driver as that little 14" dwarf isn't exactly running cold either.
