Michael Scofield, “Anxiety in Early Adventism: What kept the saints awake at night?”
3 August 2024 |
In addition to the formal, voted doctrines, Adventism harbors and perpetuates a wide range of beliefs and fears about threats to the church and its members. Of the eight major sources of anxiety, six come from beyond the church community, and two come from within Adventist popular thought. External threats included the Roman Catholic Church, labor unions, calendar reform, and one world government. None of these seem to pose a credible threat today.
From within Adventist thought (developed over 180 years), the imminence of Christ’s second coming (often instilling fear) and the uncertainty or precariousness of salvation combine to keep devout Adventists awake at night.
We will look at examples of expression stirring up these anxieties through the years.
Teacher:
Michael Scofield, M.B.A., is a sixth-generation Adventist and a specialist in data asset management. He has given over 830 slide lectures both in his primary field of data management and topics of general interest for religious and community audiences. As a sideline, he is a reckless amateur sociologist.

Warren Trenchard, “Should the Ten Commandments Be Taught in Public Schools?”
zhlédnutí 101Před 19 hodinami
27 July 2024 | Recently the American state of Louisiana legislated that all its public school classrooms must display the Ten Commandments. Aside from United States Constitutional concerns about the independence of religion from government, and the obvious Judeo-Christian bias it engenders, this legislation begs several content-related questions, the answers to which should inform the decision ...

20 July 2024 | When I was studying for my MA, my professors explained our Adventist perfectionist leanings from the historical-theological perspective, as a tenet of Wesleyan holiness movements that were very influential in 19th-century America, and influenced our pioneers. However potent that explanation might be for the genesis of perfectionism, it doesn’t explain the stubborn persistence of ...

6 July 2024 | There is a cardinal rule for Adventist pastors: never mention politics. Ever. This presents a difficulty: political matters and religion heavily overlap. It was true in New Testament times, and it is still true today. The Bible is our source for Christian ethics. To woo voters, some matters of Christian ethics have been taken up by politicians. Each time a subject gets coopted by ...

Ellen preached racism under inspiration. Its irrefutable. HER own son and Uriah Smith + other pioneers and sources affirm this 100% . She even used Uriah's book. Unless you agre with her that certain races of man are amalgamation of man and beast then you do have a false prophet D. E. Robinson for many years Ellen G. White's personal secretary took issue with Price: In a paper titled "Amalgamation Versus Evolution" said that Price's insertion of the word "of" into Ellen White's statements did violence to the "obvious meaning " that the author herself intended." -Spectrum, June 12, 1982, p.14. Dr. Harold Clark a biologist tells the truth "Clark called attention to his work with Ellen White's son, W. C. White and D. E. Robinson, her secretary. Neither of these men ever doubted that Ellen White meant the crossing of man and beast by the phrase "amalgamation of man and beast." -Spectrum, June 12, 1982, p.11

Every Adventist struggles with reconciliation of false doctrine of the church. If they are honest they will eventually leave the false doctrines and embrace the gospel. Otherwise they will struggle uselessly till they die, and we will see all these videos of the struggles.

Hi Loren I listened to the replay “ Can Adventist talk about politics?” it was very interesting, especially the gentleman at the end who spoke about living in a socialist environment in Europe.. I think a big gap in the conversation was that none of the views represented the black American Adventist perspective on politics. It was often mentioned that there is a movement to the right within the Adventist Church. This is primarily in the white Adventist churches , politics for the average black American and black Adventist is more about racial inequality, civil rights, police brutality, issues regarding poverty, and healthcare. These are the issues that the majority of black American Adventist are concerned about, so when we vote, we vote for parties that address these issues and the issues of the historically disenfranchised. Black Americans see the right leaning party in the United States as opposing those things that help to improve the quality of life that we have in Black America. They often see LBGTQ advocates equating their struggles to the civil rights struggles of Black Americans, as an insult considering what African Americans have been through. So Right leaning politics is by and large a White Adventist phenomenon. Black Adventist though conservative by nature and not not historically pro LBGTQ, will however vote for the Liberal Party that show concern for their concerns.

I enjoy listening to everyone of biblical discourses that's placed on tis platform. What's happened then, now and till when God comes is how well humankind reflexes God's law/character, and how well we seek is His help in living out it's instructions, so what we see recorded here humans doing their thing so what's recorded is what's recorded.

I appreciate being able to watch this on YT as I was not able to be with the group when it was live. To answer one of the questions that was raised, I can say that as a former student of Dr. Trenchard, I remember him being quite open with some of these ideas, even back in the late 70’s in our classes. I do distinctively remember though, that he would sometimes dramatically walk to the door of our classroom and look through the small window to check and see if any of his fellow professors were in earshot, before he made some of his more profound statements! 😊 I can say that it is probably his presentations on responsible Biblical Hermeneutics that has helped me the most in my spiritual journey. It is the most valuable thing that I learned in my four years of study. I can still hear him say, “Who are we to come to the Bible with pre-conceived ideas of how inspiration must work? How much better to come to scripture, observe what is happening in the text, stand back and say, isn’t that interesting that this can happen under the umbrella of inspiration!” This has been a spiritual lifesaver for me. Thanks Dr. T!

I have never taught that Seventh-day Adventists are or ever have been “unanimous” about much of anything other than that the principles of the Decalogue are perpetual and universal, that the seventh day of the week (Saturday) is the biblical sabbath day, that the second advent of Jesus will precede the millennium, that (to use the language of John Wycliffe in the fifteenth century and Martin Luther in the sixteenth century) the condition of the dead is “an unconscious sleep between death and resurrection” and that death in Jesus “is a fine, sweet, and brief sleep”, that the purpose of the return of Jesus is to resurrect the people who have died in faith and take living believers with them to the mansions he has gone to prepare and that the initial phase of the final judgment began at the close of the 2300 days mentioned in Daniel 8:14. Other doctrines I have never taught include: That the seventh day of the week is “the proper day to worship God”. (True Christians worship God every day of the week.) That the Seventh-day Adventist organization is a “Church”. (The first Seventh-day Adventist conferences - including the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists incorporated in 1863, didn’t use the word “Church” in the names under which they were incorporated.) That the use of arms to defend oneself, one’s family or one’s country is always a sin. (Although I don’t object to other adventists holding that view if they aren’t dogmatic about it.) That military service on the sabbath day is always a sin. (Although I don’t object to other adventists holding that view if they aren’t dogmatic about it.) That remarriage (to another person) after divorce is always a sin. (Although I don’t object to other adventists holding that view if they aren’t dogmatic about it.) That eating flesh foods is a sin. (Although I don’t object to other adventists holding that view if they aren’t dogmatic about it.) That the King James translation should be employed exclusively as the basis of doctrine. (Although I don’t object to other adventists holding that view if they aren’t dogmatic about it.) That only 144,000 people will be translated when Jesus returns. (Although I don’t object to other adventists holding that view if they aren’t dogmatic about it.) That the doctrine that Father, Son and Holy Spirit are one God in three persons is erroneous. (Although I don’t object to other adventists’ preference to avoid the word “Trinity” if they aren’t dogmatic about it.) That Christmas and Easter are biblical holy days. (Although I don’t object to other adventists “celebrating those holidays if they don’t do so in SdA church building and don’t try to impose such celebrations on other adventists.) That the Lord’s supper should be “closed” to Christians of other denominations. That a communal cup should be used during the celebration of the Lord’s supper. Just to be clear, the above are doctrines I DON’T teach. I don’t consider any of the above doctrines to be essential to the emphases that brought the present-day advent movement into existence. Where can I find a group (in cyberspace if necessary) that shares the adventist message about the nature of the millennial kingdom while not being dogmatic about some of the other things that many members of the SdA organization consider to be “essential”?
