How one bug changed my memories of Dungeon Keeper
I set out to play Dungeon Keeper and reminisce about it! Which went great until I found KeeperFX and it was... not what I remembered. Yes, it's one of those days where having nowhere good to record a video only ranks somewhere about #21 on the list of issues I have here.
Notable sins:
0:00 A dungeon of my own
1:22 Subversion and serendipity
2:50 Parental porkers
4:11 Clock speed woes and KeeperFX
5:31 Coveting the actions of smarter people
7:48 Making life difficult
10:00 Seven minutes is a lot of nothing to say
11:35 Welcoming the Age of Plastic
12:32 That bit with the dogs
13:45 Bad times for the Lord of the Land
15:02 Making sacrifices to see what happens

Bonus fact: Dungeon Keeper spent a long time in development, with trailers and prototypes from as early as 1995. While early in-game footage looks quite different, scenes from the game's pre-rendered intro appear in their final form in trailers from 1996.

If you are reading a script, could you find a better position for the teleprompter? It's irritating that you look next to the camera the whole time. I tend to leave the old stuff up apart from a few bad ideas and anything with catastrophically poor production quality as there is still hopefully some entertainment value to be derived from it, and perhaps as proof that it's possible to slowly learn this stuff by trial and (mostly) error.

    I never had a problem with Tickle, but I followed the "cheat" strategy. First, don't click out of the previous level until I get a level 10 reaper/mistress/dragon. Transfer said creature with a special. Possess said creature to absolutely wreck the opposing keeper. Transfer said creature to the next level. Basically, turn a management sim into an FPS for many levels. That's the ticket.

    • @TimberwolfK
      @TimberwolfK Před 3 dny

      I love that they did this - there's a straight-up way to play the levels but you often have a "cheese" strategy (like grabbing the hellhounds and attacking Blue's dungeon heart immediately) or the option to explore the previous level thoroughly and bring across a strong creature to help turn the odds in your favour.

      Yep - I understand fully that GOG et al. just want to host a ready-wrapped version that the vast majority of users can just install and play without needing too much technical knowledge, but I'd love it if they could host images of the original CDs and patch disks for people who're able to emulate (or even have the correct physical) appropriate hardware and get the full 'original' experience. Had a look at the UK map for ETS and... wow, there's not even the M20. If you had to reduce the UK down to the single most relevant road for HGVs tcoming in from europe, it would have to be the M20. I know because I live near it and Operation Brock causes problems for anyone living around here on a seasonal basis. Did the people who made this map even visit this country FFS?

    • @TimberwolfK
      @TimberwolfK Před 3 dny

      It's the curse of reusing old assets; the UK map dates from an era when truck sims were destined to sit on a spinner rack with a load of other "attractively priced" shovelware and all the maps were pretty much, "pick a few roads on a map, trace them with standard assets, and move on to the next project". It's noticeably jarring now the SCS team are able to do on-site research trips. What I really miss from the map is all the bits of UK driving where you're taking lorries around roads in towns and cities that are too small for them and one awkward traffic car can make your life an absolute pain. Promods does this well, and gives a lot of "UK-feeling" situations, like bits of South London which go from massive multi-lane roundabout to narrow single carriageway and back again within a few hundred metres, or the bleak feeling of stopping at a junction in Scotland and seeing nothing but road stretching into the distance in both directions.

    • @RAFMnBgaming
      @RAFMnBgaming Před 3 dny

      @@TimberwolfK Yeah, it's one of those things that's so normal it's really uncanny visiting countries with sane road networks. Definitely gotta throw in a couple of major connecting roads that for some reason go through a housing estate that's been street-parked down to 1 lane. The sheer terror of realising that someone's also started driving down the street from the other direction. There are way too many roads like that near me.

KeeperFX made to many changes to my taste, and I know the game so well, that I coded my own interface to play it in Deeper Dungeons. Not that hard, I just have typed in the maps I want to play into the *.lif files in de LEVELS directory. I don't want to say anything negative about KeeperFX, I think it's a great achievement. X-Com: Apocalypse is my favourite X-Com/XCOM game (I spell XCOM as "KSOM", since it is clearly one word, while X-Com is not). Although I never played first one, and very little about second one. XCOM...well, I played it through once, and was trying with expansion to play again, but felt that it is so inferior for X-Com: Apocalypse, that I stopped playing it. I do not like idea, that every agent can have only one grenade, or healing item, or so... I loved to think what I want for that agent to carry on mission, etc. Some of them armed on their teeth, while others having less equipment (so that they can actually move too, and have actions). Also, I like more sci-fi element of Apoc, and that there is multiple levels in map, and it is important part of missions go to vertical buildings, and clean them out. And of course the demolition part (although I never had intentions destroy parts! (says some one who gave autocannons with explosive ammos for those who's accuracy was poor, and normal ammo for those who had good accuracy (but it works mate! It works!!))). But I never played with real-time mode...for simple reason: I panic more than my agents when they see first-time aliens, if I play with real time. I like my apocalypse nice and calm; easy to control! I also won the game in one of first tries. Didn't see problems with technology, or end game invasions (opposite, mid game were helluva laser show on top of the city, destroying lot of things, but in end game, I think enemy were destroyed quite fast?). But I saw my friend play the game before I did, and got some tips and ideas which were great help. I also believe that I was quite lucky: no other corpos were hostile than Cult of Sirius, and I "eliminated" Sirius in early game, so they were not really other enemies than the aliens. I would like to play the Apoc again, but mouse issue and voice issue were last time quite game breaking things (well, I think voice issue was fixed last time I tried, but mouse issue still existed). I hope OpenApoc could fix that. But more than that, I kind of wish there would be "remake" by some indie company... which take all good elements from the game, and alternate those mediocre parts of the game (like the end game, which I didn't like at all... I mean the alien world... Equally bad with Half-Life's end...). PS. Do you know that feeling, when you first time buy the biggest, most expensive missile and use it first time against aliens, you launch the missile and look it in map view how it comes closer and closer to enemy ship...and in last moment, enemy ship make 90'decree manoeuvrer, and avoid hit, and the biggest skyscraper in the who city got the missile...and will collapse from it. And after battle, you see the bill from the skyscraper, look how much you have money (not enough), take load game, and never again use that missile type..? I know that feeling.

    It's kinda surreal watching this as I'm eating my breakfast and getting ready to go to work as a bus driver. Granted, it's 2024 and the US, but those noises haven't changed much across decades and continents.

    Oh my god I had this exact bug! Some levels were okay, it'd be a 20% chance of getting a proper AI, but a lot of the time the AI was so passive! Never knew this was the case, but it definitely explains why KeeperFX is so much more difficult (and more fun tbh)

    I played soo much Midtown Madness 2 as a child. I loved driving around London and San Francisco. It looked so real to 12 year old me. I love games that take you to real places.

    I remember, back when i was a kid playing Dungeon Keeper, the possession spell blew my mind. Being able to explore my own dungeon in first person was so awesome.

    I had/have the gold edition, and one of the better things about that is if you put the CD in a regular player, and skip track 1 (game data), you get several music tracks to enjoy.

    Yes! I have the same problem with age of empires II! I played on the very original vanilla without patches or expansions!

    I have 273 hours in ETS2, though I could swear that it is way more. It feels way more. And I have 50 in ATS. But driving through a desert isn't my type of thing.

      I tend to spend most of my ATS time in the mountain and forest states, although they're less fun when you're in a low-powered truck with a heavy load...
