Greatfield is the final frontier: Hull instantly stops when you get to the eastern side of the suburb. Then it’s the fields out towards Hedon. I heard someone say once that if not for the Old Fleet river, which hugs the edge of the district, the area may have extended further east.

This is how it all starts, brother. Next time make a movie about a real Manticore...

This is fabulous! My maiden name is Gay and my Mum was a Rennison from down Hawthorne Ave. Hearing about all the characters is wonderful as I know my parents and Grandparents were among them at the time. I now live by the sea in Australia, a million miles from Hessle Road. Not sure why this popped up on my CZcams feed but I'm glad it did! Thanks for posting.

My auntie and uncle lived down welsted street .sue and Mike Dixon in the 60s and 70s .so I spent a lot of time in the 70s playing down there.half way pub think everyone in hull knows half way lol

My grandad was Horace Clark and Granny was Emily. My mam is Flo Clark that was and is still going strong at the age of 90. I loved your story and all the photos that went with it. My mam has the photo of the Gillette street trip with granny and Aunty Edie on the end.

Good news the government has approved a e petition for "Hull council restore the Artic Corsair and excavate the docks at St Andrews quay in memory of the fisherman of Hull" Please sign the petition at epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/65510 The more support this e petition gets then the more likely the issues will be raised in the houses of parliament.

I was born at no 24 Gillette st in the shop in1955

I lived at number 24 Gillette st it was a shop when we lived there,moved out when i was 8 years old and Gillette st was demolished. Had some fun times down that street..

my grandad also worked at Dee sreet club, most of my mums family were on trawlers one of my uncles was awarded a special award for bravery he dived into the north sea and attempted to save a man. he was lost on the lady jeanette in 1939 he was the 2nd engineer he should not of gone on that trip but was called up, how sad he was only in his thirties when he died, my name is jeanette and i am so proud of my great uncle, i am trying to contact tom courtney so would be glad of any information thanks

i really enjoyed this story how could this guy remember all the names fantastc my mums family came from hessle road, the surnames were Graham, Newton and Lyon, i was born on hessle road and proud of it i left as a toddler but my mum who is 80 tells me all the storys my fathers name was Adams his dad was called arthur Adams he was the milk man on Hessle road, my dads brother was called chas adams he was well known in the half way he would tell me storys about giving out straight jackets great
