Dungeons & Dragons: Don't Break Your World with Homebrew Items!
*All Drinks in this Video are Root Beer*
Homebrew items can be great, they add a TON of possibilities for players and open countless doors for story advancement. But be careful! If you give your players too much power over the world you've created, the entire campaign could fall apart.

    I'd say that something being overpowered heavily depends on the campaign setting and even more on the players playstyle. You can give the most damage dealing paladin ever a +3 mace that also grants 2 more damage dice when smite is used, but if the player tends to only use violence as a last resort, that item won't change the game by much. Also, it may look like giving the op damage weapon to the pacifist is counterintuitive, but if the player has the motto "I use the mace not to start fights but to end them" it makes a lot of sense to give that player the one-shoting weapon. I once had a newby player who rolled extremely well and bad for stats and ended with 18 dex and 7 con. By level five she dealt double the average damage than the rest of the party, but also had less than half their max hp. The definition of a glass cannon. So I gave her a +1 dagger that increased the damage die to d6 (for simplicity) and also gave one extra sneak attack die, which turned to three dice when crit instead of two. She became almost guaranteed to oneshot an enemy if she hit, but kept being extremely likely to get oneshotted herself. That meant she never run straight into combat, still relying on her friends to tank for her.

    Hat of Sunglasses. Homebrew Items should fulfil the RP thematic that it's focusing on while also being embedded into the DnD origins of a roleplaying GAME. Example; 'When wearing this hat, you also equip a pair of sunglasses. If hat is unequipped, the glasses disappear.' Talk with your players, and figure out if they like a +1 to Deception, Stealth or other abilities. An homebrewed item that isn't tailored to a specific character is a waste of effort as balancing is different for different tables.

    I raise you 4d6+2 hammer that blinds 1/turn vs con save Magic sword that can nullify high level magic essentially at will Custom familiar that is around 3 times as powerful as an imp for our chain warlock and also grows with lvl. And fucking uhhhh Additional bonus action for the arti rogue, always. Anyways, yes we are power scaling up in this b-

    I think my favorite items are mundane-ish things that doesn't focus on number advantages, like a diving helmet sized sphere that always has breathable atmosphere in it or something like that. It could probably be used for something extreme and ridiculous, but only if players get creative, and you still control the numbers

    • @lunaqueer
      @lunaqueer Před 2 měsíci

      Maybe an unbreakable little marble that's a little squishy and too smooth and rounded to lodge easily in anything🤷‍♀️ They could maybe destroy something mechanical with that, or jam a door or gate, but the squishy round thing would pop out after a couple of rounds (probably with a low DC to remove it manually). Call it a Bounc Yba-Le

    I make op weapons to kill op enemies, I love making and tuning systems to balance them, just finished my test run campaign and everything is ready for my mecha dnd game.

    I homebrew a lot, frankly too much, and because of that id like to think I've gotten decent at creating homebrew that only breaks the game if I am not prepared. There are some things I just don't touch. I don't like bonuses to things like initiative or base stats or DC's. I like to give strong abilities with interesting effects; I like my players to feel like the peak of humanoid ability. Any time I make my players stronger I have to take into account how I need to adjust my villains and my world; let them feel powerful but also make it so now more powerful things are going after them. The bones of DND 5e are very versatile and easy to modify, and unfortunately that means you can quickly make something very broken. Don't make something because it sounds cool; make something that can work and is also cool

  • @yeetyeet4212
    @yeetyeet4212 Před 2 měsíci

    This sounds like you are trying to give the advice that you need to balance the game based on the manuals, rather than watching closely what you do- It doesn't matter how strong the characters are, you have practically unlimited control over what is allowed, and what the enemies will end up being. What matters is being a good DM and actually paying attention, like you said, to what characters have, their stats, etc. Homebrew can be perfectly balanced even with really strong characters, you just have to be pretty creative. If a DM is complaining about not being able to balance the game, it usually is either they can't control their party at ALL, or want WAYYY too much control over exactly how the story goes, because they pre-wrote it, but didn't leave room for the choices their players end up deciding on. It requires some foresight, and a fine balance of laying the law VS allowing a bit of fun

    well the solution for me is easy get even more insane with terrain and monsters i made a monster that deals dexterity damage every hit it becomes easier to get hit being in it’s radius lowers the dexterity you can also use the same things against it i gave one of them a stand and one of them a devil fruit they will now face opponents with stands and devil fruits the only way to balance insanity is with insanity

  • @williamappleford148

    i gotta completely disagree with the thesis statement of the video. Give the players broken items. Let them be badass. You have infinite power to challange them.

    • @drflannelxd904
      @drflannelxd904 Před 2 měsíci

      The existence of this video can be boiled down to a skill issue. And an assumption that the game balance is what makes D&D fun. Those groups get to play like 5 subclasses because everything else is outclassed by better options, and what's a roleplay?

    • @lemuntpicard7482
      @lemuntpicard7482 Před 2 měsíci

      Amen to that but you can already do it with regular items.

    • @Realience
      @Realience Před 2 měsíci

      It depends on the group, I run games where balance is important, being badass isn't something I hand to my players, and it's not something they want me to hand to them, they work for it, the badass is theirs, they did that, not me If you never plan on using your setting for anything else, or reset the continuity after every game, then yeah, who cares, but if you want to use the world as your players left again, and you give a shit about the rules of the world, you need to be careful so you can maintain the aliveness of the world

  • @jacobgee4613
    @jacobgee4613 Před 2 měsíci

    I gave my players the "bags of hand holding" a pair of bags of holding that open to the same space (just large enough to fit a pair of hands). Even if my players find a way to break the game with them the solution will be creative and fun which is the whole point

    • @lemonlem
      @lemonlem Před 2 měsíci

      I love gimmicky items. A magic item that lacks power, but can turn a creature into a rubber duck with a low save DC could make for some interesting dialogue without major consequences.

    • @crisrody852
      @crisrody852 Před 2 měsíci

      @edarddragon most players are like that, because it feels fun for a while to be overpowered; but as the DM, it's our duty to make sure they don't get overpowered all the time because it's boring. So, we give 1time use items that they will keep in the bag for ever afraid of needing it latter hahaha

  • @johntodd6413
    @johntodd6413 Před 2 měsíci

    Not gonna lie, I start with making my villains broken. My favorite go to is a dragon that has access to a 9th level spell as a breath weapon as a BBEG. Feels fun to spam a spell like time stop and watch my players have to think outside the box and 5 steps ahead was fun for the campaign

    • @lemonlem
      @lemonlem Před 2 měsíci

      That is honestly the best. My players are more into the emotional plot developments that complex puzzles, but it can be very satisfying to present a hopeless situation to your table and watch them plan a way out. It's a good way to bring the party together both in role-play aspects and in game mechanics. It adds value to your game and creates a bond among your players.

      @lemonlem Před 2 měsíci

      @evalyor thank you for the suggestion. I'll see if I can cook something up for the next video! Always remember, at your table you create the world around your players. If you make a mistake, there is no shame in taking back a bad decision to ensure your players still have fun!
