You Might Be Wakeboarding Too Fast! Low Risk High Reward Riding with Shaun Murray
And this could be one of the biggest reasons you want to just wakesurf now! Low Risk High Reward wakeboarding starts with slowing down the boat's speed and in this edit I give you some examples of how you can get on your wakeboard and not take super hard falls that make you not want to wakeboard anymore. Questions or comments about this or any of my other edits here on my channel? Put em below! And thanks for watching! -Shaun

HOW TO VIDEO WAKEBOARDING! GoPro and DJI
Shaun making it look easy as always :)
I think that your speed cutting across the wakes (edge speed) may be even more important for impacts and injury than the boat speed. This is because if you have to edge at 10 mph and now you have to edge in at 13 or 14 mph you are still going faster overall then cutting 2 mph off of the boat speed. Thus in order to "slow it down" and lessen the risk of injury, I think it is probably better to shorten the rope while keeping the same boat speed for taking tricks wake to wake. Shortening the rope and lowering the speed slightly may not give any benefit in my opinion.
괴물인가요
One thing not discussed on this video, is it just me, or is riding slower “harder” on your body? (I’m not talking about falls or impact). I mean things like: turning, edging, etc- I just feel so much more tired riding slow, I think sitting lower in the water is way more work, I feel heavy, like I’m being dragged rather than cruising on top of the water, even with a bigger board, compared to riding 21+ mph. Maybe I’m old, but I feel more sore and get tired more quickly at lower speeds- maybe it’s just in my head?
This is great intel for so many “I dont like getting hurt” people
Isn’t it better to start with pads or at least with one front foot pad? My 10yo started in pads on first session after 10-12 tries on my macrochip with png 1150 foiling at speed about 5-6 mph
Hey Shaun, do you stand tall in the trough of the wake or past the trough once you start climbing up the wake? Thanks!
do you recommend such a slow speed for everyone? beginners and skilled? I find riding slow is more energy consuming. my go to speed is 22.3 and length at 72.5. Then for learning tricks absolutely slowing it down, compeitions are at length 67.5. and Advanced trick i'm learning, whirlybird, at beyond the shortest, like 45 feet at a speed of 16.8. And on top if it's choppy shorter lenght as well. I guess I'm saying have your default length and speed, but learn to take advantage of slower speeds and shorter lengths for different goals.
I would sink at 22.5
Thank you for this! I was hoping you would put a video out on this ever since you told me about slowing down your speed at the Nautique SC Regatta. I look forward to trying it out!
Hi Shaun, which board length did you choose for the slower speed? Did you up-size to the 144 for the day?
All the coaching and tips you give are so helpful. I watch your videos before I go out riding so I have a game plan to improve. Thanks so much Shaun!
Mike has Supras that are even better than his Nautiques. Also, Gail is a rock star! She can do it all. Great video!
You guys can rip on my 05 210 any time
That’s my boy!!
Get a bigger board, go a slower speed = maximum fun
This video should be shown with every boat purchase! If people knew wakeboarding didn’t have to hurt, our sport wouldn’t be becoming shadowed by the dominating wakesurfing market
I'm 42 and have been riding at 22.5 for years. Never even thought about. Thanks for this topic. I'm definitely going to play with this idea of slowing down and maybe take a section off the rope.
Always great content my man!!
Hey Shaun. I'm 240 pounds. I need speed or I start sinking a bit and get huge line tension. I have a 150 Murray Pro that I love way more than my previous board. What is the fastest board that hyperlite offer? I was thinking of adding the riot loaded to our kit. Would love to slow down without the line tension
There’s a bigger board in the works so within the year you will have another option!
Love the sport so much I’ve slowed down but not that slow lol. That’s what my son rides out right now. Trying to not let him have the same mistakes that I have. We need some Murray time.
Thanks for your videos. ✌️ Awesome board control. 😮
Folks should speed up. 90' line at 28 mph is the ideal set up.
What are the best taco's in Orlando?
Honestly. Probably Tacos el Rancho
@@Shaun.Murrayalright it’s going on the list next time i’m down there!
@@LifetimeShred I'm trying it as well. Shaun should get an advertising deal for them.
I encourage you to wear a USCG approved vest as well. I fractured 5 ribs last week attempting a Raley at age 44 with a comp vest. Paying the price!
Shaun has it in his DNA already. Your advise is kind of lecturing Olympic chamion by some amateur starting training basics at 44 😂
Riding on my 89 Nautique 2001, 20-21mph, 60ft line . wake has a good shape, definitely not size of the un-ballast G! anything slower than 19mph I feel like wake is washy. Can the size of boat and the wake coming from it affect how fast or slow you should go?
In my experience, the smaller the boat the slower you can ride at.
He said he is running full ballast in this video.
defiantly something I try to practice (low risk high reward) especially with inverts
Love the Taco Patch!! Thanks for the info on the SUP yesterday.
What about us heavier individuals? I'm 6'3 210, and below 20mph I feel like I have to work super hard to stay on top of the water. I ride a 144, I have heard you say size up on boards, but would that make that much of a difference?
You won't regret it. Murray 150 would be awesome.
@@LifetimeShred tried to buy one a few years ago, but was damaged in shipping. I returned it, but never repurchased, maybe I should try again.
I’m 6’3 250, and ride a 142, normally ride full ballast 23mph @ 70ft my new board is going to be 150+ the new board tech keeps them light but the extra volume makes them soooooo much easier to ride and enjoy at lower speeds.
How slow can you go and still learn tricks such as spins and inverts?
just depends if you want to go wake to wake and how short of rope you want to use. One wake inverts and spins you can go super slow. But even in this video he has to hit the wake carving in at a pretty fast speed.
LOL, I love this. As a 53 yr old listening, all I hear is slow down LOL. I almost broke my foot one day standing up on it while it was asleep. My body is so strange now and I am strong. Aim for a soft landing! Love it! Don't forget to keep rockin those Carrera looking sunglasses! Keep ridin' awesome Shaun!
Thanks for watching 1310! 🤜🏼💥🤛🏼
This sport is for 30 yo at maximum if one plans to go further than backroll. Prepare for broken knee ligaments, ribs and at worst fractured leg bones and scull. Not to mention multiple brain concussions after hitting water with one”s head
@@AndreyKuznetsoff I'm 37 and learning, or trying to learn the whirlybird so don't say that, wanna learn new tricks, slow it down massively, shorten it massively, or even start 1 wake.
let’s goo shaun! 👊✌️

I have never been wakeboarding, but finally got enough gear to try. With the great help of this video, I got three adults and four kids up with a couple sessions' effort. Thanks a ton.

Thanks for this video. I am 46 and I definitely don't like the risk as I did when I was younger. This sounds like a lot of fun.
I had to free ski @ 12m to avoid the concrete like bump
Excited to hit the lake and give riding finless a try! You’ve been my go to teacher for wakeboarding, great video!
Ive been wakeboarding for about 3 years, just took the fins off today and realized how much more fun it actually is. I actually like the feeling of being free and I got my first 360 in today
Love to hear it Funkalicious! So fun and so many people haven't tried it
I loved the roam board by HL. Had no fins, was like a snow board on the water. It would carve like no wakeboard ever did. Too bad they discontinued that design.
Funny you bring up the Roam bc I was just going through boards yesterday and found my original one! Should I take it out for a rip?
@@Shaun.Murray Absolutely, took mine out last summer and the bindings bolts pulled out of the board. I guess it was just too old to hold up. I started looking for another but couldn’t find one. 😎🤙
Way cool!
I use this video all the time when I’m teaching someone to wakeboard. I have an idea though. Once in a while, I have someone who just can’t stay up for more than a few seconds. I just made a massive fin from a surfboard and cut it trimmed it, drilled and tapped it to fit on a wakeboard. I’m hoping it will work kind of like training wheels. If My idea turns out to be helpful. Maybe hyperlite should make a big, massive rear fin just to help people learn.
Great idea! My buddy Chris did this to a kids board by adding a 1.3" wakeboard fin to the center of a Murray Jr board so I did the same and is a great way for some riders to stay locked in when first learning.
Best "How to Drop the Rope" video I've found. Sean, you always are so clear, concise and articulate in communicating the relevant points...while adding some humor! We share this video (and your how to get up on a wakeboard video) with our boat club members and more.
Thanks for the great feedback! And thanks for watching! 🤜🏼💥🤛🏼

I always wear my Jet Pilot Murray vest. CGA. Not sure what brand that is that Rusty has though? He put a custom patch on it to make it his own
Give me a call if you need an average Joe to assist with a barefoot review of the GS22. We can do long-line deep water starts and some wake crosses and report on how soft/turbulent the wake is. We can also show off one-foot if it’s fast enough, can it do 40 mph? Currently foot’n behind a GS20.
Pretty sure it ran 40+. Where do y'all run your GS20?
@@Shaun.Murray Hi Shaun, we met at the Colorado Boat Show a couple of times. We're on Milton Reservoir in Colorado, the same lake Action Water Sports demos the new Natiques on. My GS20 tops out around 39.5 with the factory 1235 prop.
The goat thank you for being sick and such an ambassador for the sport you were an inspiration for me back in the day and still an inspiration today ❤

Should not be on small lakes, under 500 acres... Damaging the lake bed and shoreline.. These boats have been banned on more than 24 lakes in Wisconsin and many more soon.
As a lakefront home owner, I find that wind storm damage is what causes shoreline problems but I can understand some people's frustrations with boats on the lake, especially the ones that go back and forth on the same line, too close to people's shorelines and docks
