What I think of this handmade pan mee from Long Sheng Kopitiam, Penang, Malaysia
Pan Mee is a popular Hakka noodle dish. The noodle is made from flour cooked in a fragrant anchovy pork broth topped with crispy fried anchovies or “ikan bilis”, minced pork and mushrooms. Some even topped it up with green leaves and a half-boiled egg with the yolk still runny. It’s either served as a dried noodle or soup noodle, spicy or non-spicy. Pan Mee is popular in central and southern part of Malaysia. It is not a common find in Penang kopitiam. This pan mee stall is located inside Long Sheng Kopitiam in Tanjung Bungah near to Tanjung Bungah wet market. Where do I start? I love a good pan mee. This one delivers the best pan mee I’ve ever tasted in Penang. For a start, the dough is made by themselves. Freshly made daily and individually portioned. All ingredients are passionately prepared by the young guy and girl. They are not even 30! I am impressed with the freshness of the food and generous amount of ingredients that go into the bowl. The noodle is cooked perfectly. Silky smooth with a lovely texture. The anchovies is wow wow to me! Fried nicely and crispy. I could not taste any msg in the broth. It’s naturally salted from the crispy anchovies.
NOTE: just want to make a correction in my video which was pointed out by a viewer. The green vegetable is not baby spinach leaves. It is called "sayur manis" which is a Malay word, literally translated into English as sweet vegetable. "sayer" means vegetable. "manis" means sweet. It is commonly grown in Southeast Asia.
Another favorite stall in this kopitiam for me is Ah Ping’s Char Koay Teow, czcams.com/users/shortsEjssznHIDpo?si=mRJipt_uhQD07PwM. It is the best CKT for me. Individually cooked to order plate by plate. Word has got out. His stall is now extremely popular. Be prepared to wait at least 20-30 minutes during peak time.

    Would love an answer to a question I have :) we booked this hotel this December, I’ve seen a lot of positive reviews on this hotel which is great, but a lot of people mention that it needs maintenance, and tiles missing in the pool ? How big of a deal is this ? We chose a swim up room, how are the rooms in the hotel? We want a cozy nice hotel with an awesome pool but I am worried about the maintenance reviews, but then again, i don’t think there’s a flawless hotel anywhere, great video by the way :)

    • @foodtripwithvictor
      @foodtripwithvictor Před 7 dny

      @@danielkamph7046 …it wasn’t a big deal for me after swimming in the pools with the broken tiles. I got used to it after couple of days. The pool attached to our pool room wasn’t cleaned when I checked in. Water was a bit murky. In between tiles filled with algae. I was hoping it will be cleaned after 1-2 days but no one came until I took some videos and went down to the reception to complain. They responded immediately and sent someone to scrub and vacuum the pool. It was better the next day. I only used our room pool for dipping and the main pool for swimming. We stayed 9 nights. After the 3rd day, I tried not to look for the flaws but try to enjoy what’s good about the resort. The daily long swim in the biggest and longest pool I’ve ever swam, the daily free activities, the complimentary bike and kayak, the beach which is very private as there’s no other beach hotels nearby, the daily free shuttle that runs on set timetable to Bang Niang market and Khao Lak town, no running and screaming kids because the hotel has a policy of no young kids, not crowded even hotel is almost full, no noisy and rude Chinese (from China) tourists because there is no big shopping malls for them 🤣, and the friendly staffs. It’s also easy to meet other tourists as most staying there for more than a week and everyone seems nice and relax. The resort is old. We were told it’s 10 years old but we reckon it’s more than 10 years old with the room furniture and interior decor with dark wood furnishing. The main compound also look old and dated which needs work. But I guess that’s the charm of this place. When we were there, there were renovation works at the main restaurant. After a while I don’t notice them. My eyes were mostly drawn to the coconut trees and pine trees soaring into the sky. One thing you must know is there are 5 separate buildings for the rooms. I wasn’t happy with the first room which was dark and old and located too close to the main lobby. I looked at 2 other rooms in a separate buildings which has more open space and natural lights and feels more private and quieter. Personally I think a pool connected to the room is a nice idea but not necessary. To sum it all, we had a nice, pleasant and relaxing time at The Haven. Cheers, Victor

      @@foodtripwithvictor Your welcome Victor, I love watching Nepali cooking and Delhi Food Walks and others. Seeing how they cook such amazing food in villages on the floor and I know first hand how tasty it all is for me is just a draw to that country. I’ve also noticed that in Nepali celebrations they fly the flag of both countries which is so respectful. I really wish there were TV shows in the UK that showcased all these special dishes and the local areas like in your videos and others I’ve seen in detail not just jumping about so quickly. It’s all so interesting, and amazing how people such as yourself speak such clear English and even in Nepal shop signs are in English and Nepali even though there’s no white people there 😂😂 I went to a proper Malaysian place in Birmingham China Town, the food was amazing and blew my head off 😂🥵 Really hope your mum is still ok, and always tell her her traditions and food are amazing. Just because Britain is seen as an elite country 🤔 doesn’t mean it is, people are so lovely and hard working in Asia from what I’ve seen 👍

    Assam pedas is not a nonya dish. It is a Malay dish, Geram Assam is our nonya dish.

    • @foodtripwithvictor
      @foodtripwithvictor Před 2 měsíci

      It depends where you come from and whether you have a peranakan lineage in your family or not. Asam pedas is a nyonya family recipe for Peranakan Cina in Penang. For my viewers who don’t know what is the meaning of “peranakan”. It is a term used for early Chinese settlers who adopted local Malay culture in their food when they intermarriage with Malays centuries ago. So you are right when you said it is a Malay dish originally, which to be more precise it came from Indonesia. Like any family dishes cooked at home, there are going to be variations on the ingredients used. As for “gerang asam” not “geram” it is not a quintessential dish for the Penang nyonya. Maybe in Melaka. But certainly not in Penang, and you should know if you are a Nyonya is that the Peranakan food in Penang, Melaka and Singapore can be very different or taste similar and called differently. It does not make the dish right or wrong just because you disagree with the name.

    This is an old dish I used to eat this dish when I was very young in the 60s. Seldom find it even in Nyonya rest.

    • @foodtripwithvictor
      @foodtripwithvictor Před 2 měsíci

      That’s right. Rarely find in a restaurant menu as it won’t be same if made in big pot with ingredients blended rather than pounded.

      @@foodtripwithvictor "Pounded" rarely now all blended now does not taste the same. My Mum is a Nyonya. I saw how she cooked.

    • @foodtripwithvictor
      @foodtripwithvictor Před 2 měsíci

      You don’t have to, but you can if you want to. Just to brown the chicken. Obviously it’s going to be an extra step. As for the website links,I’ve corrected them now. Reason old links don’t work anymore because I’ve decided not to renew the paid site. Cheers, Victor

    28% - 588 watt starts to heat up oil, but need a few minutes to come to heat 32% - 672 watt slowly cooking - resting meals, soups till they are done.... 42% - 882 watt ideal cooking temperature to roasting meals For van campers cooking on solar stations is 42 % important, so with 800 wat solar panels with even not big power station with less capacity can cooking be real.

      Wow, this is excellent information for me and my viewers. Thank you 🙏. You’ve given us a guide on the power range knob. Based on the percentages on optimal settings, I have converted the percentage to the heat power range. The heat power ranges from digit 0 to 99 with maximum heat of 2100 watts. 588 watts = 27-28 672 watts = 31-32 882 watts = 41-42 Excellent tips! Thanks. Cheers, Victor
