I took a course on orchestration recently, which was a fun experience. Since the workload wasn't very heavy (aside from memorizing the ranges, registers, timbres, and characteristics of every instrument in the modern symphonic orchestra) I decided I wanted more practice. However, I also wanted to interact with the music community on CZcams a bit since I spend a bit of time listening to various composers here. I was recommended hahhey1372's piece by the almighty CZcams algorithm, saw a request for it to be orchestrated, asked if I could orchestrate it for practice, and went on my way to only finish the string quintet before my university workload crushed my spirit into dust.
Two months later, and after 3 days of work (and 2 days of listening to the piece periodically) this arrangement exists. Honestly, I wanted the textures to be a lot thinner, but I don't think anyone would be disgusted by what I've put down. I got to use a handful of different instrument combinations, but I think the piece is much more suited for smaller ensembles. Or, perhaps, the piano. Crazy thought.
The video score is absolutely disgusting. You cannot see the string section for most of it, which I tried to resolve by removing the measures of instruments that weren't playing. However, I forgot that video scores do not list instrument names, so the entire thing is a big confusing mess now that the order of instruments is constantly being adjusted on a page-by-page basis. I included the musescore page for a bit of clarity, but the contrabasses still get pushed off the bottom of the page.

The voice leading between measures 2 and 6 suck, but by the time I really noticed that I had already spent ~75 minutes rendering the video and I don't have the willpower to restart. I also forgot the key signature, but let's pretend that was intentional. Very pretty piece! Its really interesting hearing you write a piece in this style, it's very tame compared to your usual style but I like it! The primary theme is super calming and poignant, and I really loved when it returns with octaves in the LH and when it re-iterates the melody an octave higher. I also thought it was fun how the B section is offset by a beat. What was the intention behind the low thirds? Is it to keep the pattern going of the double stops? Beautiful piece man, love hearing your stuff!
I tried to tone it back a lot since I was using my inner ear to write the piece. I'm not sure exactly what you mean by the low thirds, so I'm just assuming you're referring to the entire accompaniment of the B section. They're just to fill out the harmony a bit, since the A section is very thin. It also plays into/establishes the double stop pattern, yes. I wrote the B section front to back without returning to edit, so there's a handful of things I didn't consider and that I would change if I were to rework the piece. Beautiful arrangement man! I'll have to go check out the original. I love how you balanced the different textures, with the strings highlighting that beautiful haunting harmony and the extra instrumentation joining it for certain parts of the phrase. Super neatly transcribed too!

does an ear infection cause you to confuse the first beat with an anacrusis?
No, the ear infection causes me to hear two different pitches in each of my ears, creating an incredibly dissonant interval each time I hear what would normally be a single pitch. Are you suggesting I shift the entire piece over an eighth note so the D# at the beginning is on-beat?

I can sorta hear the medievality. Mainly it's the instrumentation and some of the cadences, with the guitar evoking a harpsichord. But yeah like I've said previously, I hear folky campfire song vibes in this (with supernatural buddies lurking just 'round the corner), which I really enjoy. In another universe where I play any of these instruments well (or at all), I'd be jamming to this out in the starlit wilderness and vast mountainscapes (home to vaguely ominous cryptid sightings) with whoever accompanied me (human... or otherwise)! Would love to hear this performed live again some day, fully prepared, if that's ever a possibility!
I don't know enough about the nuances of medieval music to identify it unless it's really obvious (the Skyrim soundtrack). I can see how the instrumentation would suggest medieval. I'm glad your interpretation holds up listening to the recorded version, as the live performance was a bit messy. It's an atmosphere I'm interested in and I'll probably spend even more time picking the piece apart to capture the spirit of camping out in the wilds, with a hint of something unknown watching. I hope I can get this performed live again, and recorded. I'll tell you if that opportunity ever arises. @@TristinBailey I don't know enough about the nuances either! I just apply vibe checks with my subjective reality...! No worries about any delay. CZcams's spam filter can be annoying but I choose to view it as funny for my sanity's sake. It probably disliked the dead space I accidentally left in. (Either that or it discriminates against excessive parentheses!)

It is literally impossible to do so. You just need to play them close enough together that it feels like a single chord. Virtual piano is not suited for any piece of music that isn't in C major.
