Is the link here cause or correlation? For example - do those who sleep for over 8 hours have a shorter life expectancy because they slept longer or did they sleep longer because they have some other condition that requires them to sleep more? If someone sleeps 8 hours and still feels tired, should they reduce their hours or seek out the cause? Richard Wiseman’s book “Night School” is very good.

Hi Ged, thanks for the question. I think that the reason 8+ hours of sleep is linked to higher mortality is probably an association. I don't believe that sleep itself becomes harmful if we get too much of it. But maybe something else is wrong which is preventing the sleep from performing its function. There is evidence that 9+ hours of sleep indicates other health issues. Check out my sources R1182 and R1183 when my list is updated. Personally, if I was sleeping for 8+ hours and not feeling rejuvenated, I would team up with someone who could help. Some adjustments to diet and lifestyle could be needed. Or it could go deeper than that. If I was working with a man who found sleep wasn't rejuvenating, I would suggest some inexpensive blood tests to check for underlying health issues. I hope that helps!
