    What would you say are some typical situations in which black would want to play the second approach move high instead of low?

    • @HereWeGameOfGo
      @HereWeGameOfGo Před 22 hodinami

      Great question! No easy answers, but I can try. The easy answer (if there is one!) is that the low double approach by Black gives White the right to choose which way White wants to play the initial pressing attachment, so White is more flexible in that sense. But this doesn't say much. I would say that the high double approach is better at triggering fights (if White follows the optimal move by attaching the high approaching stone at E14, followed by Black at E15), or when Black wants to build some influence on the left side (the side of the high approach) because some variations that don't result in fights give Black a stronger shape on the left and leave the low approaching stone relatively more vulnerable. But this is when White plays the optimal move. If White plays the pressing attachment against the low approaching stone, then Black won't get influence on the left side, but the high approaching stone will be at a good spot, which will give White trouble building a good shape or attacking the high approaching stone. Hope this makes sense!

    Wouldn't the position at time 5:58 be a ko if white plays at D19?

    • @HereWeGameOfGo
      @HereWeGameOfGo Před 19 dny

      Great question. I think you are right! After Black 7 at 5:58, if White plays at D19, Black A19, White A18, Black C19, White A17, (Black can capture the ko first at A19, and after White gets back at B19), Black E19, White A15 - will indeed lead to a ko! Black can win the ko by capturing White at B17. White can win the ko by connecting at A19, which is a corner bent four that will lead to a second ko! Fun variation I should have elaborated on!

    What do you think about the series " Becoming 9kyu " on the OGS forum? And, do you think that Haengma/Shape gonna be an important topic? Because most beginners that I taught still don't know what they are doing after Joseki.

    • @HereWeGameOfGo
      @HereWeGameOfGo Před 27 dny

      Just took a brief look at the series. If it's by professional players, then it's probably worth a look, but of course there's the potential language barrier issue and whether the style fits. I haven't seen a good systematic run-through of all the basic shapes. I try to get into a tiny bit of the discussion on shape in Chapter 4. I mention some good shapes and bad shapes as I see them in my game reviews. But nothing systematic yet. I'll think about it after I'm done with the joseki videos. Thank you for the comment!

    G13, … F13 G15, F14 F13, White connects by capturing 3 stones F14 F13, E13 G12, ladder doesn’t work and White captures more. Didn’t see the connect and die at all.

    • @HereWeGameOfGo
      @HereWeGameOfGo Před 3 měsíci

      If White plays at G13, Black can make things more complicated by responding at G15. White will have to follow up with F14. (If White follows up with F13, Black can kill White with F19.) But White's F14 has many flaws -- Black can respond with J14 and will threaten two ladders.

    Fun fact: The hane and clamp punishment was played by Honinbo Shusaku. I think the Edo period house probably arrived at the conclusion that the hane, clamp or cut if you have the ladder was correct. They got a lot of things right which were later messed up by the shin-fuseki.

    Are there any Center problems in the Gokyo set?

    • @HereWeGameOfGo
      @HereWeGameOfGo Před 4 měsíci

      Great question! Most of these problems are on the corner or the side because that's where most of the complications arise in games. And the calculation skills gained from these exercises are readily transferable to patterns in the center of the board. Some Gokyo Shumyo problems "spill" from the side to the center, but they usually at least involve the side or the corner, not just in the center.

  • @axelkoper

    the joseki sequence as shown at the end @17:20 almost never shows up in my games if i try the E17 nobi. usually instead of white 12 at C16 white plays G15 or C18. (trying to take a big center moyo or maximising the corner points. maybe you can talk about those moves in a followup video

    • @HereWeGameOfGo
      @HereWeGameOfGo Před 4 měsíci

      Good questions! C18 is similar to C16 in securing the corner. Black can still play at H17 after White's C18. White makes Black's shape a little weaker, but White still has a cutting point at C16 (Black can't cut right away, of course, but it might become a problem in the future under some circumstances.) If White's 12 is at G15, I think Black should be okay just stretching/extending on the fourth line for another few moves. White does get a wall, but the cutting point at C16 is a glaring weakness in White's shape.

    Am I supposed to solve these just by visualizing? Would you consider this problem for lower dan players?

    • @HereWeGameOfGo
      @HereWeGameOfGo Před 5 měsíci

      My advice is simply do whatever works for you best. If you are just starting out, then playing out the variations on the board as you think is important. If you are more advanced, then you won't need to put the pieces down in order to think, so just stare at it and think (I guess that's what you mean by "visualizing"). So either approach works depending on your level. As for the level of difficulty, the problems in this book really varies. Some are super easy, and some are super hard, but everyone can benefit from all the problems. If it's too easy, then just solve it within a few seconds and go to the next problem. I would recommend this book to lower dan players.

    I literally did this for a year straight. 13:16 I couldn’t play many games for a few years, but at work, I spent almost every toilet break pondering over a go problem or two (from WBaduk) and when I got back into go properly, joined a go club again and played games, (my first games were weird ngl 😂) but my ability to fight was just better. If you do this, you will feel like Goku when he trained at 100x gravity and then arrived on Namek stronger than ever. Lastly. Big reason why I like this channel is it is the first place I’ve seen someone talking through the reasoning of many Go Problems, I really appreciate it because I don’t always know the common shapes or, I might have to name the shapes myself to try and remember. And I really want to get better at Go Problems. Major Appreciation for the channel ❤
