That goal by Mick Channon.....why is that skill somehow more compelling to watch than a lot of the incredible skills today. Apart from the goal itself, there's something to be said for a goal to be seen from just one angle, just one camera. As if you were there! Like so many classic goals from the 70s and 80s that are etched in the memory because of only having one viewpoint.

Because, back then Dave,u genuinely had the opposition making committed "X rated" tackles&challenges(that probably soundz nicer for today's more fragile viewer!)Football Pitches that were more suited to Grazing farm Animals! And a truly harder,Leather ball which was(and should still be) the correct ball to be used to play the game, not this silly"Lightweight"piece of crap, which apparantly allows so many players(of all standards) to perform all manner of "Circus tricks"? Ones that greats such as PELE,Cruyff,BEST,Maradona,(including so many fantastic Brazilians)Gullit,Baggio and so on, apparently couldn't execute.. But today we see these efforts week in/week out? No I'm sorry the "Paying Public"is being conned, because the major difference with today's game is mucho $$$$$ and the addiction demonstrated by today's players for more of the same and the availability of so much football to watch! But we do know that old adage "less is more" still stands up to scrutiny, especially in this case,!.And that's my case to argue why the game was better back then!..But i would imagine,u disagree?

@@Spectrescup That is nonsense! .if u have played with both,u would know the difference! . Just because the companies involved within the game say it,doesn't make it thus! And I think u are a little confused, the that type of Leather Ball that soaked up the Water, started to be less in use around the Mid 1970's! The Mitre Ball ( from around 1968 &for the nxt 40 yrs& was the official supplier to the English Football league Assoc. But in 1992 when the English Premier League started, that was when they switched from a Leather Ball to the Synthetic Ball they use today!)it's an shame because their original Leather Product was a really well balanced Ball!. And why do u think footballers ' Boot's' became more like 'Slipper's & u started to hear alot more about Metatarsal injuries! And it's just like the Football 'Pitches' or fields, many teams started to include Hybrid Grass or reinforced natural Grass' And it's done by combining natural Lawn grass with reinforcing synthetic fibres! ...Which really creates a smooth Bowling Green effect,& makes the game faster! ( But faster doesn't necessarily equate to more skillful!) ..But of course i respect ur right to disagree!

There were two themes tunes to this programme,1982 to 1986,[this video and 1986 to 1990.] In the days of Regional ITV LWT produced World of Sport because London Weekend Television was the London Broadcaster. Weekdays THAMES who therefore had to produce and make the theme tunes for Medweek Sports Special. THAMES TELEVISION also produced SPORTSWORLD when ITV started 24 hour television from 1985 -1987 and was the first programme to show European Football Highlights. But with the start of Pan-European Satellite Broadcasters like SCREENSPORT 1985-1993 and EUROSPORT 1989-1991 SKY EUROSPORT TF1 France 1991 -on wards this soon came an irleveance. Both Medweek Sport Special themes are on You Tube somewhere. A former disabled carer from the New Forest. GOD BLESS!

Strangely enough, this theme tune was also used in an American porn film called Frat House, made around the late 70s/early eighties. It was very catchy and I was sad when ITV decided to replace it with a new one around 1979-80. Anybody know who wrote it????

This could just as easily have served as the theme to any ITV sitcom, possibly starring Jack Smethurst or Alfie Bass. In fact all ITV football themes sounded like this pre-Jeff Wayne, I've got the 1978 WC theme and compared to BBC's latin guitar effort, it's all beer and chips and Harold Wilson lol.
