Greetings! I am a mathematics teacher by trade and by hobby. I also enjoy showing my skills in video games. I am probably best known in the Paper Mario challenge running community, though I dabble in other games of my childhood and adolescence as well. As of now I do not have a specific upload schedule, though this may change in the future.
I also upload videos of myself teaching lessons based on specific textbooks. I record these videos at Kirwan Hall (the mathematics building) at the University of Maryland, located in College Park, MD. The chalkboards there are of excellent quality. I use a high-quality chalk from a Japanese company called Hagoromo; now produced in Korea. Each lesson has an exercise set keyed to them so that a student may try to apply the ideas presented in the lesson. After all, the ideal learning experience is created with lecture, discovery, and exercises in combination, not with one at the exclusion of others.
I hope you enjoy my content and learn lots from me.

You hate to see it, better luck next time.
I'm planning on doing it tonight but with 10hp, am I allowed to rank up a partner?
Glad to see these kind of enemies are not common in the original and remake of TYDD Fuck that - would absolutely be crazy taking down 4 of those guys at once
First try! Nice!
Doing well so far! Keep it up!
Baseball time
Hi
Nice run!
Thanks! This one was a *very* long time coming.
Rather impressive!
Thanks!
...Aaaaaand subscribed.
Very kind of you. Thanks. Been a while since I've started this; work has gotten in the way big time. But I'm gonna resume this before long. We're about 1/3 of the way through the game with my currently uploaded videos.
30:08 Didn't know you can backspin in golf. Best Bogey I've ever seen.
It never fails to impress me just how realistic the physics are in this game, and just how much care they put into it. You've caught up on my LP at this point. Thanks for your viewership and feedback! I do have a couple more videos stored away to prepare to upload, but I'd rather not interrupt the middle of a course. Better to be between courses in a situation like this. It's been too long; I need to get ahead on recording when I'm not swamped with work and academics.
This was a pretty relaxing round after all the competition lately.
You win some, you lose some. If you wound up winning all the time, competition would be boring, even against AI.
The AI at its toughest is absolutely brutal and merciless. Part of why I broke these mutliplayer series into the front nine and back nine was to give myself ample opportunities to defeat these later golfers. For example: I've never beaten Donkey Kong legitimately (though I'm definitely capable of it; would have if I didn't botch this game), only beat Bowser legitimately once, and Metal Mario is a machine whose ferocity is almost beyond description. You're almost certainly going to see more losses in the future.
6:35 Bet you Mario from last match saw that somewhere and nodded being impressed by that shot. Wario's AI not being so bright fits into his persona if you think about it. He's not really bright to start with, and would act first and probably not ask later.
What's bizarre is Wario's behavior in this match compared to how I observed him before. Typically, he plays *ridiculously* well early on and then just utterly falls off a cliff. Now, he just played rather badly throughout. I wonder if it has to do with the fact that I played him on the back nine and he's programmed to do extremely well on the front nine?
8:48 He wanted to remind you that this is called MARIO Golf. That's some major flexing. Shoutout to Maple for her own impressive chip-in, too.
Everyone: Plays very carefully with their shots Sunny: Imma thrash it and hope for the best
20:59 No gold at the end of that rainbow.
17:24 Imagine if that was a hole-in-one. That would've been a surprise.
I think there was just baaaarely a little too much momentum for a hole-in-one that time. Would have bounced back off the pin. I have exactly one (non-mini-golf) hole-in-one in Mario Golf 64 history, and it was on a cartridge I no longer own.
Mini-golf was my jam growing up. My family used to play every weekend when I was a kid back in our old hometown. Grateful that I live near an in-door one so I can go anytime I want. I was actually planning to go again this year since it's been a while. Didn't happen for obvious reasons. At it least it hasn't gone out of business.
There was a mini-golf course about five or six miles from my home as a kid that I absolutely loved, especially after having seen something similar to it in the form of Mario Golf. I played *tons* of Mini-Golf in Mario Golf 64 as a 6 year old kid, since I struggled with the nuances and complexities real golf until I got a bit older and smarter. I'd say I was maybe 8 or so when I reached a respectable level of play. As you have just seen, that childhood experience paid off. I was very skilled at this particular set of holes. I'm far less experienced with the blue or pink variants (which will come later and are worth playing, as the holes are actually in different places), and less experienced with the overall more difficult Peach's Castle course. You just might see some Mini-Golf spills in the future.
I always had a feeling Ring Shot looked more challenging in Mario Golf than Tennis. It's also pretty fun to see who will score big in an intense mtach from the latter.
I've never played multiplayer Ring Shot in Mario Tennis; I've just played the single player mode. I've found an exploit against the CPU for Ring Shot in Tennis; hopefully I can describe it properly here: Just use Backspin shots (double-tap B) and your opponent will do the same which is easy to return, keep it up until you've reached the requirement. And yes, Ring Shot is a very challenging mode, and it only gets tougher from here! Wait until you see what crazy stuff I'll have to do in the harder courses. To unlock Donkey Kong, you have to complete 30 of the 36 Ring Shot holes. Yes, they're generous enough to give you a 6-hole buffer. It's that tough.
Asking out of curiousity: do you use Audacity to record commentary? I use the hotkeys to record and stop the track. Nothing wrong with my mouse, it's just more convenient that way.
I use an Elgato Game Capture HD to record my gameplay and my commentary all at once. No post-recording editing whatsoever. Don't know how to do any of that stuff. I click on "Record" on the software to start recording gameplay, and click on "Record" again to stop. After starting the recording, I click on "Commentary" to start my commentary and click on "Commentary" again to stop. It's about as simplistic a setup as you can get. It's all on my laptop, with a track pad for my fingers (once finger for left click, two fingers for right click). Once in a while, when I move my pad, a "click" triggers without me actually clicking the trackpad. I guess it happened this time when I went to move my mouse off the "commentary" button so that I wouldn't click on it again, and didn't realize it clicked off the commentary. I do have Audacity and Win Movie Maker so I can try editing later, but I'm keeping it simple for now and for the forseeable future.
@@MelloMathTeacher That's fine. Syncing up audio from Audacity is pretty simple, but work at your own pace.
I gotta watch all of the parts lol
Glad to see you're enjoying it. This is my first ever LP.
@@MelloMathTeacher You seem like a natural already
@@MelloMathTeacher It makes me mad seeing that you get only a couple of views a video. I could possibly shout you out next video i make whenever that is. I dont have much subs either but I would like to see my mans who taught me multiple things about ppl to thrive.
@@Caseoh._Funny._Clipss Feel free if you like, but it's not about the views for me. I'm just having fun and testing things out, and letting others enjoy it. As far as being a natural, I guess I've got a couple things going for me. One, I'm a math teacher. I love math, and to do my job well I've gotta be enthusiastic about things I love. Secondly, I watched a fair bit of LPs as an adolescent and picked up on a few things. Most important of all, keep it simple, keep it fun for myself. The rest will come naturally. ;)
@@MelloMathTeacher Its really good that you are having fun on this platform, and you make enjoyable content AND your a math teacher and I respect all of that 100%
I can barely complete mewtwo in very hard xd
That's very good, dude. The Very Hard AI at the very end is about the same level as the middle stages of Super Hard, I think. Keep practicing your chains and garbage tennis, build your endurance, don't be intimidated by the inhuman speeds of the AI; they're fast but really, really dumb sometimes. There exist some setups that really cheese them. I don't like to use the cheese strats because they won't work against good humans. And keep having fun with it. That's the most important thing. ;)
@@MelloMathTeacher thank you I’m getting myself motivated to try s hard so I’ll hopefully get better lol
@@MelloMathTeacher ais can occasionally pressure me into getting no chains and make me lose
@@Caseoh._Funny._Clipss Probably the best advanced strategy you can do is ensure that you have plenty of blocks and your stack is of moderately high height. Obviously work quickly to stay alive while in contact with the ceiling (which is probably the majority of the time against good competition), but don't let your stack fall very low. Be careful with your chains. Don't bother sending a x11 when you know a x6 will put them on the ceiling anyway, and then work on sending new chains to further their backlog of garbage blocks. You want to reach the point where you work efficiently enough to create a chain, and have the block not appear until much later because they're still got too much other things going on. Eventually the AI will mismanage their stack and die due to lack of material. Don't let the same happen to you.
@@MelloMathTeacher Yeah Ive seen that alot. The AI goes up and down with the controller, its just they are able to break my chains easily, so the AI can get an x10 combo out of trash
Hole 12 had solid performances by all the players. The AI could be getting serious now.
Could be. We'll have to see. I think this video does a good job of previewing just how tough this game can really get. These are some of the easiest AI in the game. You ain't seen nothing yet. Things just might get crazy.
22:57 - 23:20 A lot of the misses from the AI are painful yet relatable, but that chip-in from Luigi was amazing.
The easy level AI does show flashes of brilliance once in a blue moon (or in this case, once in a red sun), and it's really satisfying to see when it does. However, as you'll likely see later, very aggravating when in intense competition...
17:20 - 18:05 I'm fairly good with basic math, but that explanation made me cement my decision to stick with mini-golf in real life, ha ha.
It's not even about golf, it's just about how Skins works. Most people don't play skins in real life; it's a pretty dumb mechanic that rewards reckless play over safe play. And don't worry, Skins Match is its own game mode so it'll become MUCH more clear what it actually is later in the LP. I'll have the skins bet active then so it'll be easier to understand in context as well.
Seeing day/night cycles in games has always been a neat touch to me. Symbolizing time passing is a small but immersive detail.
I love this detail. It really makes it feel like you're reaching the end of a long day and can finally relax when night falls. Or can you...?
The music in the game has been very pleasant so far. Sounds very relaxing.
This game's soundtrack was composed by Motoi Sakuraba. He worked on many Mario Golf and Mario Tennis games, with this being his first one. He has also composed soundtracks for Golden Sun and Kid Icarus: Uprising, and has contributed some tracks throughout the Super Smash Bros. series starting from Brawl. The Toad Tournament has some incredibly relaxing music that I really love. There's plenty of relaxing tracks in this soundtrack, but also some awesome high-energy tracks that may seem out of place for golf, until you witness the intensity of such moments. You'll hear tons of great songs throughout the project.
Some of the mechanics remind me of a few pool games I've played over time. There are a few similarites between them, like knowing where to hit the ball when setting up a shot. It's quite intriguing and provides you think stragetically in its own way, too!
I haven't played many pool/billiards games; certainly not to the level of depth in which I would find striking different parts of the ball to be practical. But the pros do it all the time, and it's the same here in golf! I love the level of depth this game provides; it really makes it stand out as a precise and challenging golf simulator.
Can't say I've ever seen the controls and mechanics explained in this much detail. Didn't play a whole lot of Mario Golf growing up (the only time I ever did play some was at an arcade). Was more into Tennis and later Baseball. So, this did help out in learning how the game is like a little more.
Always a pleasure to keep my viewers informed. ;)
I look forward to your first Let's Play!!! Wish you the very best on this LP Mello!!!
GOOD FREAKING LUCK!!!!! 😱😱😱😱 Edit: I hate to see Vivian suffering from paralysis kind of thing 😢
I like how you still have the underscore in Doopliss when by now, you know his real name.
The immobilization + Boo's transparency combo to jumpscare combo was so real, it hurt
Using a redundant point swap... man why didn't I think of that? I was having a mental block on how to add more difficulty to this month's challenges.
I thought of it when someone asked me if Point Swaps were allowed given the Hot Dog restriction in the Glitz Pit discord. I realized that you could only use them if they were "pointless." MAN, I wish I thought of that earlier. It's SO GOOD. Maybe someone can implement it in a later chapter's challenges. It sure makes planning trickier. On top of that, when HP values and enemy damage increases later in the game, it only becomes harder to plan for.
You can defeat them in one turn with art attack.
Obviously I can, but that's not the point of the challenge. As shown in the description, I was required to give both enemies the opportunity to attack with 4 Mini-X-Yuxes out before I was allowed to defeat them. The challenge is that it's difficult to guard this attack without having both party members get immobilized.
update description :b
LMAO I didn't know people still looked through these... I was miserably busy then. Hopefully in the not too distant future I'll look through all these to get the descriptions up to par with my good ones. Good times. Check out my Shadow Queen to see brilliance. Don't watch Bowser/Kammy unless you want to facepalm over and over again.
I was surprised and entertained to see that you also count down the current HP of enemies/bosses during these, rather than counting up by damage dealt (Also, description still says "Add later")
why
LOL you were waiting the entire video to get that last line out. Nice
It came to me during my test run. Came together like bread and butter. Certainly better than threatening freezing to death or getting JR TROOPA OVERKILLED.
Bro you trash stop doing this you not good at commentating
Hello, blatantly obvious student troll. This previously unlisted video is over three months old. I've gotten better. Excuse me for sharing a fun interest of mine. At least be constructive about it.
MelloMathTeacher you right it is a student troll
you the best
You got the kinda luck Mailguy was looking for with Lava Piranha lol
What a happy ending.
Awwww.... ahh quuu! Yeah, Bobbery can't hit Grodus Xes... but his explosion ignores defense from the Grodus Xes so he doesn't really need to... unless Grodus is invincible. Then he's basically dead weight. And... yea. Confused bosses don't attack their own teammates. The reason Dodgy Fog didn't work? I reckon that move took me some time to get the hang of, too. You have to push the control stick pretty much in rhythm with when the command is needed. Like... RIGHT after. It's actually a pretty hard action command imho.
Very nicely done, MMT.
...I made the same mistake, believe it or not...
