Excellent video filled with data that many know little about. My father, Captain Harold Thurston, served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theater. My long-time gentleman friend, Captain David Goff, also a professional Mariner, served during NAM. I would have most likely attended Massachusetts Maritime had the girls been allowed back in the day. My great grandfather Lee was a Merchant Marine during World War 2
i was departmetn of army (DoA) civilian in Afghanistan. met all personnel young and old (adults). Met two personnel retired but had attended USMMA...cool/good guys. one had traveled the world...marine engineer...unique and "niche" academy. and could track for CG or Navy if one wants...

You will rarely hear about the service of the Merchant Marines during WW 2. And this song is almost never sung or even known. It was 40 years after the end of the war that the Merchant Marines were finally recognized as veterans of war! FDR had the paper on his desk and died suddenly before he could sign it and Truman decided not to sign or acknowledge their contribution delivering the goods all over the war zone! Thankful today for their service to our country!! God bless the U.S.A.
We will only be recognized as veterans if there is another major war and are called upon. But seeing as they most likely won’t need us that will never happen again.

I worked for Captain Halluska many years ago. He's the real deal. Honor, integrity, kind and a true gentleman and professional. I was fortunate to have worked for him at a young age. It helped me throughout my later positions tremendously.

You might be right, Sir. We used to sing it with a punch. I sing Heave Ho as I walk along the underdeck corridors of large containerships. The echo is phenomenal.
...or bring 'em Back after 10 Years in Maritime Service. If You Look at the Environment that They are Performing in, it Appears to be a Chapel, so They are Singing in a Subdued Reverence, Mindful of the Sacrifice of Previous Generations of Merchant Mariners. Also, notice the Presence of Both Genders... because We of a Certain Age are used to the Merchant Marine as being made-up of Mostly men, it's our ears that are Unaccustomed to the Higher Pitch. Give them a little Time, and the Spiritual Strength Inherent in a Merchant Mariner will Increase... and with That, Pride... not so much in Themselves, but in the Calling that They Hear and Answer to. The Calling to Serve at Sea while Delivering the Goods aboard Vessels of All Kinds, while they Represent the United States in Every Port of Call. It doesn't happen Overnight... ... like All Good Things, it takes a little Time.

If you did the slightest bit of research you’d know they aren’t Marines or attempting to emulate them. The Merchant Marine Academy can commission officers into the Marine Corps provided they pass through OCS and the following schools. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing several merchant marine graduates throughout my life, and can say with certainty that they are well fitted and equipped to serve the branch of their choosing. It’s unfortunate you think that, but that’s coming from someone who thinks “grammar” is spelled “grammer.” How’s your score of 31 on the ASVAB treating you?
