Lotus Emira: A 1990's Supercar. Shooting Brake's B-Road Review
Lotus's 2023 Emira emerged into a changed landscape for sportscars. Rivals were few and far between, but more competitive than ever; Porsche and Alpine have raised the bar to an almost impossible standard with the Cayman and A110 sportscars. Can the Lotus, with new Geely backing, compete in the modern age? Eventuri lent us their development car so we could put it to the test. This one is equipped with their latest intake, which only adds to the Emira's drama and character.

The Mercedes R129 SL was launched to compete with Porsche's 911, however in typical Mercedes fashion, the SL was never designed to battle Porsche's sporting flagship head on. Eschewing 10/10ths performance for elegance, luxury and comfort, the SL offers a beautifully relaxing drive whilst still retaining the tactility and mechanical satisfaction that enthusiasts crave. The point about needing to learn the car and to get to know it is spot on. I had the same with my Evora and Elise; once you get to know how both cars drive and need to be driven, they get under your skin and reward in a way I’m yet to get from any other car. The more you drive them the better they get!

    Congrats on probably the best review of the Emira that I have seen-describing the nuances of positioning, controls, steering feel and sensory inputs from the car really makes the analysis. As an old guy, the only better-looking Lotus to my eye is an S1 Esprit, preferably in white with tartan trim. The performance level and feel of the Emira, and the fact that it isn't overpowered like current supercars is a positive feature to me. Having 70's level Formula 1 acceleration on the road seems a bit much to me-you need time to enjoy the feel of the acceleration to fully enjoy and tactile response is more important. My 69 Elan has these attributes, and with 150bhp and 1550lbs is fast enough for me. This Verdant Green is the dog's danglers, esp with the tan leather, yellow calipers, and silver wheels and would be my choice of spec. I would say that I am not really used to the idea of an everyday Lotus-they have always been a special occasion car to me! I have subscribed, thanks for sharing. Cheers.

    • @miscetc-tm2yt
      @miscetc-tm2yt Před 2 dny

      @@shootingbrake I could write an essay on the topic, literally. To follow up on my initial point, it seemed that whenever you levied a criticism, you also immediately followed up with a reason as to why it really wasn't all that bad, but these are serious faults with the car. When we cosset a car's criticisms, it puts less pressure on the manufacturer to build it properly. I'm pessimistic about the Emira because I have an idealistic expectation for what the car should be, and of course, when you hold expectations, you're almost bound to be disappointed. In short, the build quality issues are now well-known online, but aside from that I can't help but think that if this beautiful design, this technical specification was presented to us from Porsche, Honda, BMW, etc., that those manufacturers would be able to build the car properly. It wouldn't have a "stuck-on" body, it would have a body that naturally, normally "clothed" the frame -- the Emira's body panels seem stuck onto the car, artificially so. Another manufacturer would be able to ensure the pedals aren't offset, I could go on. But three of the biggest criticisms with the car are that it's heavier now than the competition (when a Lotus should always be lighter), its transmission simply isn't up to the task for a car of the Emira's specification (an entry-level supercar), and the great sin about the Emira is it's engine. It's an entry-level supercar yet it is powered, literally, by a Camry engine, from circa 2005. If I bought an Emira I'd always have that fact lingering in my head, "Oh, it's got a 20+ year-old CAMRY ENGINE in it.". The heart of any car is its engine, that's especially true of a sports car, even more so for a supercar. Even the Camry has moved on from this engine, yes? Unless I'm mistaken, the engine dates back to circa 2005. Even if I am wrong about that, it's still a damned Camry engine, in a supercar. The Emira deserves a better engine, I could tolerate the other issues with the car, hopefully the dealer network in North America will improve, but that engine and its redline are all wrong. I don't like supercharger whine, either. Just think about the term, supercharger "whine", it's literally whining at you. I prefer a normally-aspirated engine, but if it's supercharged, I would rather not hear the whine, I know that's not a very popular opinion but it just sounds annoying, I'd have to adjust my tastes I suppose. It's a nice effort, Lotus markets it as an all-new car and that's just a flat-out lie; same chassis, same tranny, same engine, etc. as the Evora. I just wish Geely gave Lotus more support to build this car and develop it over the next 10 or so years -- instead of focus on building Lotus models that have nothing to do with the marque. Porsche was in a similar position in the early 90s I think, they had the 911 and that was all and I think they were on the brink of collapse. Now they could be mistaken for a luxury car company that happens to build sports cars. Perhaps that can be Lotus in 10 or 20 years with Geely's help. I just wish the Emira, if it is the last ICE supercar from Lotus and one of the last in existence, I just wish that they execute correctly instead of this mixed bag of positives and negatives.

I’m afraid to park it anywhere as it attracts too much attention and I’m afraid it will get damaged if left unattended at the grocery store (as previously owned cars of mine have suffered to people sitting on the hood for photos etc). You should declare this as Advertisement for a car you are trying to sell. Was wondering how you just drool over the car and make no mention of the numerous and expensive to fix flaws it has. Yes, I drive a E64 650i and love it, but have also spent a fortune fixing everything that is wrong with almost all of them. Unless you know how to fix everything yourself, like I do, and how to use INPA/ISTA, it will bankrupt you. There is a reason why they are cheap and that is very expensive maintenance and repairs. On average parts cost about 2.5x more than for a E46. Way more if it is E63/64 specific and not found in E60/61.

    • @shootingbrake
      @shootingbrake Před 9 dny

      Thanks for your comment! This is a car review, so we discuss how the 650i drives and what it's like to interact with the car. Maintenance items would be better discussed in a buyers guide, which might be a project for the future. The E6X platform has its maintenance burdens as does any performance GT in this sector but we don't see it as an especially expensive car to run for its performance.

Nothing wrong with that, but you should make it clear in the title and throughout the video that if is, at best, an infomercial. Your non-stop praise of the car is actually painful to watch and you trying to mask it as a car review is an insult to the viewers intelligence. Why not just be honest and upfront?

    One of the cars in my collection is an LCI late E63 650. I’ve owned it for 9 years, during which time I’ve covered 60000 miles in it, and it’s been faultless. And, it gets nods, smiles and compliments from other motorists, all the time. The tweaks in the LCI edition were subtle, but worth it, including: An LSD. Wider front valance. All LED rear lights with boot-lid brake light. Silver surrounds on the inside of the headlights. LED front indicators. Upgraded climate controls. Digital gear lever. I recently took it to a BMW dealer for the new battery connection as part of the global recall. Not less than three different BMW staff told me that I should hang onto it at all costs because it would very soon be recognised as a classic. Indeed, there are already only a handful of these left. On the V10 discussion… there is no doubt at all that the V10 engine was a work of mechanised art. But… it was a racing car engine that had been adapted for the road. ‘So what?’ some people might say… Well, the 650 was always intended to be a GT car, not a race car… it was intended to cross continents smoothly and effortlessly. And, for that, you need torque… lots of it… low down. So, here’s the thing… the torque figures of the V10 and the V8 were near identical (only about 10 ft/lbs different), but the BIG difference was WHERE that max torque figure was achieved…. It was a 4200rpm on the V10, which is great for the racetrack. But on the V8, max torque is at…. Wait for it…. 2000rpm, which is precisely where you need it to be in a GT car.

      Only E63/E64 to come with a LSD (standard or optional) is the M6. A 650i LCI did not have one. How did you come to believe it does? Nor is the peak torque at 2000 rpm, but rather at 3400 rpm (490Nm). S85 peak torque is at 6100rpm (520Nm). Where are you getting these fantasy figures from?

      @@jackdoe3889 love that there’s always one d1ckhead at the pub who likes to pick an argument when there’s really none to have. But, ok, I’ll indulge you, just this once…. And, please try to imagine that I’m saying this to you with a whining adenoidal voice, just like yours…. The max torque bands on cars are generally discussed in… well… ‘bands’. It’s the sweet spot where at least 80% of the torque is delivered. Some cars even have more than one torque band, but let’s not tax your little mind with that one for now. The critical point here, my juvenile little antagonist, is that the v8 engine achieves more torque at much lower revs than the v10, thereby making it a more natural GT car. But, I can tell that you have a flare for the pedantic. As to the ‘LSD’… lol… that’s an autocorrect error. It should say ‘LED interior’ referring to the ‘LED interior’ [bulb set]. But, and you can have this one on me, because I know that you’re the sort or person who needs a petty little victory to be able to sleep at night… I got lazy and didn’t spot the typing error. You must have such a fun life. lol

    I have had 3 of these cars and still own a 1988 2.0 16V 4WS. Great cars and mine still makes me smile every time I get into it
