It was forecast to be the hottest August in the history of man, or something like that. It was a lovely day for a ride anyway, and the Pilgrims Way is always a good place to ride at any time of year.

A fantastic weekend and one of the best shows for a very long time. So much interest from the public, and as an added treat for the exhibitors, the aircraft took off and landed after the public had all gone home for the evening.

This is the best way to keep cool on a very warm and humid summer day in the South East UK. I take in a little byway ride along the Pilgrims Way on my 1955 Ariel green laner, and stop off to sit in the shade and take in the views at the Coldrum Long Barrow not far from where I live. I dont know what the issue is with the sound, I possibly got too much water or dust in the camera when I got soak...

As you should know by now, I dont pretend to know it all, and I can honestly say, I've seized a few pistons in my time, but this isn't one of them, although I'm sure the supplier will blame me for the damage to the ring land. I keep calling the lumpy piston a Gandini, but it's a JP, the Gandini is the 7.5-1 piston.

This is the short ride to the Grimsthorpe Castle quarry where we all stopped for a chat and to look at each others bikes. There are 2 scrambles during the day between other races like the Hill Climb and the Sprint which are on the grass.

I started the ride by crossing the River Thames on the Woolwich Ferry, and headed North on the old Great North Road, which the Romans very kindly built for us, and named Ermine Street by the Saxons. This was a lovely day out and over 400 miles covered through 5 Counties, Kent, Essex, London, Hertfordshire, and Cambridgeshire, on my little Herald 250. My SD card ran out of memory before I finish...

I started out in Wrotham and followed the Pilgrims Way East.
That looked like a great ride - a couple of difficult climbs - no one else on the lanes, except those three lads...!
The type of bike made the climbs a bit more difficult than they would be on a more modern bike with proper suspension, but it was a great ride, and yes very quiet today.

Nice kit. Thought this year was better than last, especially the new layout, though I still miss WAPR, hope they get that sorted for next year, and more of the European sellers come back too.
We all made the most out of a bad situation, but the groups werent happy at all about the layout, it gets worse every year. It made no sense to put WW2 Japanese next to the Vikings. A few groups wont be attending anymore.
Love the sound of these classic bikes.
I know and some were over 100 years old. It was fun watching them sprint against very modern bikes.
Ive just gotten my self one of these, what fuel mixture are you using?
It has an oil pump you dont need to premix the fuel, but you can put a splash in with the fuel if you like. The tap in the sump base needs opening from time to time to drain the unburned oil or it blows back out of the fuel mixer.

What are the chances of the same defect happening twice, virtually identical in appearance?
The fracture in the recent piston looks like the land has been pulled apart, almost as if it's shrunk at a different rate from the rest of the piston. It's also broken away from the piston underneath and wouldn't take much to lift it off.

Been using one of these since 1977. Just used it this morning. $3.99 from JC Whitney. Clean small engine, single and twin cyl, plugs every season, last for years and years. Still use it for older vehicles. New vehicles plugs last crazy long (100-160K on different vehicles and still running, which is good because they are twin spark and a pain to change. Back in the day, would clean them once a year during a tune-up ( remember dwell, points gap, etc? a Tune-up was a Tune up. Not just changing plugs and Air Filter)
A few of us went up there today - still very sloppy, mud everywhere...! Not too slippy on the steep part, but very hard work...
Yes they've had a lot of rain there lately. It takes a few weeks with no rain to dry out properly

This is the Malle Mile Festival held at Grimsthorpe Castle in Lincolnshire every year. It's a cross between Mad Max and Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas. It's over 4 days and has camping and entertainment in the evenings as well as every type of bike and rider hammering around until the early hours. Lots of different races and classes of bikes from modern to antique throughout the day. This is a part of the scramble course that had 900 bikes turn up at the start gate. Yes I went back so the official photographer could get a couple of shots, but I filled my air filter up with water and conked out. I got it going for the other races in the afternoon though.👍

My father (ex Navy Engineer) had one of these, probably bought in a trip to Florida in the early 80's . I was fascinated as a kid , esp as he told me he happily got 25K miles from a set of plugs on his Talbot Horizon with just the occasional cleaning . After he passed I hoped to find it in his tool shop , but assume it must had died and bene launched in the intervening years . I did look online , but you're right they are silly prices , and it wouldn't have been his . Thanks for the video , nice bit of nostalgia for me .

Excellent video! I have the same carb on my Zundapp. It will not idle unless the choke is fully engaged. The airscrew does nothing. Any thoughts?
Possibly the air jet is too small or blocked.

I seemed to have got one of the warmest days of the year as well. Over 30c was wafting across the green fields. A few I rode at Widdington and Linton as well, but I never recorded when my card filled up.

got a question, im looking at buying some blank firing replica weapons of the old american west is it legal to fire the weapons in your backyard or house?
There is a whole lot more to consider than whether it's legal or not. You cant just buy a blank firing replica without a valid defence, and depending where you live, you could end up with the Police kicking your door down if you have neighbours that are trouble makers.

It was a great evening, and the sky was still bright as I headed back home through the back lanes with the heat of the day still rising from the hot roads.

If you are going to dress up as a soldier of the period, particularly assuming three stripes, you should get the weapon handling right. I was trained to use sten gun as a National Serviceman 70 years ago. One of the first rules was to fit the magazine with a firm push, which is all that is needed. Banging the end after you have pushed it in and felt it click is not only totally unnecessary but also dangerous as it risks dislodging the first round which then jams the weapon so it won’t fire.
Thank you for your advice but this isn't a real Sten gun and the magazines are a very poor fit so some need a good whack to get them in while others fit as you say they should.
One of my sisters lived down Mount Pleasant on the bend just before the Wheatsheaf there's a path that trail riders used to use. My other sister who still lives in Crowborough is giving me a lift 2 weex from tomorrow to Groombridge's at Cross In Hand where I'll pick up a Classic 350 so maybe I'll have a look at riding those byways.
They spend a lot of time looking after these byways, and their hard work is very noticeable in the great condition of them. You might be interested in a local fb group for Enfield owners. Royal Enfield owners Kent and South East UK

Good. I told a mate I was now putting e10 in my 2021 Kawasaki and he said I really shouldn’t. O ring damage would happen. If e10 was damaging newer o rings, it’d be visible by now on this test.
There's a lot of misinformation regarding E10, and even if it did contain the full 10%, it would still be very dilute. Of course there are those that will say it's continuous wetting and drying that causes the rubber to perish, but most O rings have been made from Viton for many years, which is highly resistant to ethanol. My test was not truly scientific, but it did show that nothing bad happened.

The carb parts were submerged, the problems with fuel in carbs is that it evaporates and that is when the damage happens as the water is left on the brass and copper parts
I didnt find that in any of my other tests, but I would like to see how you tested your samples to see if I can get any of mine to corrode.
