Oh good, another video essay! This one is my first, about the wild world of cinematic ASPECT RATIOS. I'm planning on making more of these, so comment below what works for you about this video, and where you think I could improve. These videos will be a learning process for me, and I'm always looking to get better. EDIT: This video assumes most of your film watching takes place on a 16x9 screen....

Actually, I just watched the original on CZcams. czcams.com/video/OyBhVpUqf6g/video.html I was greatly disappointed. It suffers from some of the same problems that many movies that began as stage plays suffer from. Dial M for Murder is one of the few that I like. I saw there was a remake. didn't know Caine was in it. Funny because it also bears strong similarities with another stage to cinema production Caine was a part of called Deathtrap which I think is more successful. Sleuth is laboriously long and less satisfying in its ending. Deathtrap is better in every respect.

Batman Begins was my favorite Gotham in the trilogy hands down. It was the perfect blend of gritty realism mixed with surreal/ otherworldly. I enjoyed the city's portrayal in the sequels, but I've just never felt like Batman blends as seamlessly into his environment in those films. He sorta sticks out like sore thumb, especially in the police chase sequence in TDKR

The new house is so boring, although I do kind of like the scribble statue. I would have loved to have seen Caine in the same role as Olivier played. I get that people want to put their own spin on things, but sometimes I would like to see a remake that is just an old-fashioned remake, like going to the play again with different actors.

I grew up with the old one. My dad has a great taste in movies. Just watched them both again. The second is quite disappointing compared to the first, but I'm glad they did it. I want more remakes from older movies. I'm trying to remember another movie with similar character tones and a twisty plot. It was about a once famous play writer who has hit a dry spell. It's got Christopher Reeves. I remember it being funnier than these two. 😂just remembered "death trap "

BB (the best look) & TDKR (the spectacle more than made up for it) & worked for me TDK is my least favourite visuals in any batman movie, surprisingly being the best movie (for villain & story). Tim Burton 89 batman was the one that resonated the most as Gotham. The greatest Gotham though was the pulp like 1940s stories in the Batman TAS (1992-95).

I think some assumptions are being made here. The 3rd film is Manhattan in many wide shots of the whole city, but its mostly Pittsburgh on location. Its manhattan because they needed Gotham to be an Island cut off. They filmed in Pittsburgh instead of Chicago i would assume for reasons of budget and scheduling more than anything. Filming in Chicago and NYC can be difficult and expensive, so you go to substitute cities like Toronto or Pittsburgh. My favorite Chicago movie is Payback starting Mel Gibson. They do add some location shots of other cities, and never name the city, but it's all Chicago. And they make the era a mix of the 70s, 80s, and 90s so you can't tell when its supposed to take place, like all the cars are late 70s to early 80s models, except for some sports cars in a flashback and a limo. The clothing likewise, and the types of crimes and underworld activity, but there are all sorts of 90s artifacts sprinkled in as well.
