Booting UNIX on the Plexus P/20 didn't go to plan
zhlédnutí 93KPřed dnem
It's time to boot the Plexus P/20 into UNIX, or at least try to! In the previous parts I managed to dump the hard drive (for archival purposes) and dump the ROMs. In Part 2 I worked on making sure the power supplies were stable and working well enough to run the machine. Now it's time to actually try to boot this machine into UNIX and see if it works! Part 1: czcams.com/video/iltZYXg5hZw/video....

In our second installment of the Plexus P/20 series, it's time to try to power-up this old machine and see if we can get it to show some signs of life. Machines like this can be complex, so without any documentation or information about it, I'll have to do a lot of figuring things out as I go. Ain't nothin outdated about an Arduino. :-) It's a dev harness around an AVR microcontroller, which is a fantastic little micro for simple tasks. Good C support, 5v, lovely little ISA, plenty of useful peripherals, and a vibrant ecosystem. Not everything needs WiFi.

Honestly, if it's already acting as a bridge/gateway between a physical WiFi interface and a virtual 10baseT NE2K wired thin-ethernet interface, you could have a small boot volume and emulate an extremely fast (for the time) LAN-Manager / NetWare volume injected into that gateway, that your small volume can mount as a drive, the way network boot systems did at the time. Sometimes from a ROM on the NIC, and sometimes from a boot floppy that then mapped C: and all the paths onto the network "drive" letter. That way, there is no local filesystem management at all, and the backing storage could easily be NTFS / E2FS or anything else which the ARM chip manages external from the "old PC". I'd also be interested to see how that system works with more exotic OS. I'm sure it would work on 286 / 386 systems, so OS/2 and MINIX would be interesting to try. I know OS/2 can be a massive pain to find drivers for anything not specifically IBM, but still. I also think that DR GEM Desktop, preferably on DR-DOS (whose memory manager, and FAT control are far superior to MS DOS 6.22 anyway … Especially because it provides EMS *and* XMS interfaces for *all* memory found in the system, reducing the memory pool for both memory types as pages are allocated through either interface) and since GEM was Open Sourced a while back, there is an XM-GEM variant which can utilise XMS memory. … I've always wanted a 68K emulator for GEM similar to Executor for DOS (which is something else now open source and public domain which you should really try out if you haven't) to allow ST GEM applications to run on the (theoretically) more powerful, but far less widely supported with software titles, DOS GEM, in the same way Executor for DOS does with Apple Macintosh software. Which is, that it doesn't emulate a Mac, it just emulates a 68K CPU, and provides native 8086 APIs approximately equivalent to those available in Mac System 6/7. The end result is *very fast* execution of Mac applications on a DOS PC, even with only a 12Mhz or so 286 CPU.

WRT battery crusties. The best treatment is a baking soda paste soak (work it in with a toothbrush, followed by rinsing with clean water and then isopropyl) - this applies to both Nicad and dry/alkaline cell leaks 74S (schottky) devices can usually be safely replaced with LS (low power schottky) but are generally highly reliable. It looks like you're just unlucky that the corrosion penetrated the case

I am following your channel since someone pointed me to your "C64 left for dead" video some 5 years ago, and loved every episode since then. Same applies to your series. But this one topped everthing before. How amazing is it to get a machine with virtually zero documentation or any information running again. And the community figuring out things needed to preceed. One has skills in this, the other in another subject. All combined results in awesomeness I've never seen anywhere else.

I came across a cheaper version of one of these in my local supermarket last night...Priced at £10,- (About $11,25). The UK model doesn't have the USB port or video output though, and with 108 rather cheesy-looking „retro“ games loaded on it (None of which will be familiar to anybody who's ever played games on named brand consoles) I'm worried the newer „UKCA“ version might have all the games stored in the blob, rather than having a separate NOR flash that you can conveniently add your own content to. 🎮🇬🇧💾 Also, just as a test: Did you try running your meter over the data rails coming from that USB port? It's probably there mainly to provide connectivity for the second controller as you theorised...But manufacturers of stuff like this like the product and any upgrades to be quick and easy. If they're putting in a USB port for a second controller, might as well have USB upgrade capability in it too. My suggestion is that the *D+* and *D-* rails might have been swapped around¹. 😉 (¹ - IME: A common trick to make a „proprietary“ USB standard that seems to never work with anything except expensive „official“ accessories. 🔀)

Git is a software highly optimized to track differences between two versions of the same file, usually text files containing source code (hence it is typically used as a versioning tool in software engineering). Git is really not suited to manage files which usually only change either completely (from a _binary_ point of view) or never at all, like office documents, PDFs, or in your case ROM dumps and photographs. I am scared that you might even put executable files you may find on the HDD into that git repo. All those types of files should really be better placed in artifactories. Git is _not_ the right place for them.

I had an Acorn Electron when I was 12 back in the 80's. Unfortunately Acorn missed the Xmas sales and had to throw away thousands that didn't sell. I enjoyed using the Machine and learned to program BASIC on it. The games probably ran slow in BASIC, they did better when I typed in machine code from the Acorn User Magazines. I often think about getting one from Ebay for Nostalga, but they are a bit pricy. I'd love to know what happened to all the excess stock. The worst part of the machine was the soldering on the power connector. Often, the computer reset, deleting all the work I'd done, unless I had saved it to tape. Thanks for the Video, great working fixing the computer, very interesting. I might have to give it a try myself. I haven't played around with electronics for years, but it would be worth the challenge.
