Hi! I'm Christine, a pathetically uncool but alarmingly passionate maker of things. Mostly journally things from actual books to vintage relics and replicas. Discover easy and fun techniques to help you create your own art books, junk journals and ephemera-plus who knows what else!-that evoke memory and hint of rich secret histories and mythic yet perhaps ordinary lives. I look forward to getting to share this journey with you.

Dazzling Junk Journal Pages with Avocado-dyed papers, fabric. So easy with dried peels and pits!
Guacamole or avocado toast fan? Then you already have most of what you need for this fun natural dye project. Here I show my process with dried avocado skins and pits and the results are gorgeous! This was my first go at this dying process and I'll definitely be doing it again! I used a variety of papers and now happily have a way to mask the ugly green of that modern ledger paper! Plus I dip vintage fabrics, trims, and discover that one paper that I've been feuding with for a year still doesn't want to play nice...we may have to just break up!

Did you use clear Matte? I used to make my own too, years ago, i dont rem what i used, lol. Today i just use pva watered down, but im not triple coating to create a sand able surface. I also love to use matte fluid medium as a topcoat and sometimes to apply tissue etc. Was fun to watch, thank you.
Are you asking about the acrylic polycoat? I used Gloss finish - but it still came out matte in the end which works for me!
This was an awesome explanation of step-by-step. I tried it about a year ago, but I don’t really have a place to dry or even do anything because it’s so small in my kitchen and just in my place altogether. Mine came out very nice, but it was a very small batch. I wish I would have frozen the rest. Very hard for me to do this so I have been buying them. Just like the cabbage died which is more bluish. Smells icky, but looks beautiful. Anyway, I really like how all yours came out. It would be so nice to have a place to do it and to dye more than just a couple of sheets of paper at a time. But I do wish I would have had this video when I first tried it. There are some key steps and ideas that I missed. Oh well, I know where to go when I’m ready to try again. Thanks for this lovely inspiration! Hugs ❤️🤗🥑
Hmm. So here's what I figure out. I should have (and will in the future) freeze leftover dye bath in SMALL batches. I can always thaw multiple "servings" but right now for example, I realize I didn't dye the shipping tags I'd wanted to . If I'd frozen the liquid in small batches I could just defrost one and do a little batch of small things without any fuss, or the "where will I dry all of this?" problem. This week's supposed to be hot and sunny so I think I'll do some more and take advantage of the solar dryer...Does the cabbage paper smell?
@@sparkbirdstudios yes it stinks! But I didn’t make it. I bought it from the same place where I got the last avocado dyed. But it smells! I’m not sure what could be done to reduce the smell. When I open that specific pack to get a piece out, I get knocked out by the smell. 🤣 I spray them with perfume as I use them 😂
Thankyou so much. I'm about to dye my papers, fabrics and laces with avocado and was interested in how someone else does it. I didn't know about freezing the liquid to use again. Great info. I am currently dying with beetroot. I didn't know the use of baking soda would help the colour. So I have learnt a lot. I appreciate your work. Thanks
Thank you so much! I hope you get lovely results when you try it - and I'd love to hear more about your beet root - I bet that's a jazzy color!!
Yes you can freeze it. I’ve done it. I usually let my paper and fabric sit in the avocado dye bath overnight. I like experimenting and getting light to deep colors. I’m obsessed with trying different natural dyes. I’m currently drying purple onion skin dye paper. I made the mistake of not wearing gloves and my fingernails are yellow. 😭 I love your fabrics. ❤️
How dark did yours ultimately get? Red onions are on list tot try and I'll be using Queen Anne's Lace this week, weather permitting!
@@sparkbirdstudios If you’re asking about the onion dye, it doesn’t dye a purple nor a red color. It’s a yellow cream tone. Some of my paper dyed a creamy yellow, and some of them are more darker. It’s a pretty color. I really like the yellow and white onion skin dye.
@@LovinDebsFit50s Hmmm. That's interesting. I would have though a red/purple tint. Still a fun thing to try. My grandmother always threw yellow onion skins into the pot when she hardboiled eggs. The shells turned a tan/brown. It was how we all knew which eggs were hard-boiled.
I have used pattern paper and lace on the spine, so you can see it when you see into the hollow. I have also tucked a lace bag with a pen and pencil in the hollow, for fun. I like the tube, there is another way to make it but i forget how, lol. I made one just to try it out, and it works great, cant remember what that is called either. lol, hollow spine? ;)
I have always used soft stretch lace to tie them on the cylinders, i think i like the tape better. Watching you, i wondered if one could have the pvc pipe cut lengthwise and then put the spine on a full piece and press one half of the other over it. I know ive see them do that to make something or other calling them clips. It may be difficult to press it on, but it would be so much faster in the long run if it worked. Might have to press the halves on and off several times to stretch them out? Then just use the rubber bands around them, or maybe they wouldnt be needed at all. I once had 5 acres that i made into a oh lol cant think of what its called, safe haven for birds. But to do that i had to put up 5 strands of barbed wire, they said to keep everything else out. I hate barbed wire. I did not use the barbed and just plain hot wire, it went through. I had a seasonal stream the crossed the length so the birds loved it there. Who cares what the neighbors think!
I love the way you think! But an challeng might be (I've not tried this physically - yet) that a pvc pipe cut in half would not fit inside of itself, perhaps it it we cute slightly asymmetrically? Still thinking about it, but I LOVE you idea so I will try it the next time I'm near a table saw!
And you're right - about the neighbors! The pollinators are so much more important
Wow, thank you so much for sharing!
This is one of my FAVORITE journal add-ins. So glad you enjoyed it!
@@sparkbirdstudios Yes, it is a very surprising treasure!
Wonderful gifts from Carol, and Carol so sorry for your loss and also best wishes and blessings to you moving forward. Christine, thank you for passing on the kindness! Look forward to seeing beautiful creations😊
Mine was a small gesture compared to the original gift, but thank you!
I'm so jelly for all that Tim Holtz paper pads!!!! You can't get them anymore.
So I've been told! Prior to this windfall I had almost no TH in my stash, just a few odd things...now....glorious!
What a beautiful soul Carol must have. So strong yet so giving. Truly an amazing woman. This gift of treasures is phenomenal! Best wishes to you Carol, you are inspiring in so many ways! Hugs ❤️🤗
Wow - what a generous gift and it will be wonderful to see how you create with all this wondrous stash of kindness. Truly exceptional collection of enticing supplies! :) Blessings to Carol and hope that her new paths and direction are fulfilling and healing.
Christine it is truly amazing how in someones own tragedy they have the ability to forge through it and spark so much joy for someone else. I don't think she could have reached out to a more deserving and appreciative creator than yourself. Enjoy all your new goodies, I will be watching to see what you create in the future. I also want to thank Carol for her generosity. She is not only sharing it with you but with all of us, your followers. Also I want to wish Carol all the best on this new chapter life is taking her. Hugs and stay well.
Thank you Ina and I couldn't agree more - that out of trauma sometimes blooms beauty. (I've already started setting aside some favorites for my next project)
Can I come over and play?
Totally. It would be a joy to share this abundance!
Wholly cow! What an awesome and extremely generous friend!
Apparently I have more than a few of those. Lucky girl that I am!
Amazing Gift from an Amazing Crafty Friend!!!
You got that right! 💜
Wow, your bread journal turned out awesome! It is so beautiful and so functional. I absolutely love this closure. I have those little closures, I think you called them bracelet closures, but I’ve never used them. Now I have a reason to.😂! Thanks for more fabulous inspiration! Hugs ❤️🤗
You're so welcome. And the closure is uber-functional. Let us see yours if you go for it!
Beautiful journal. What kind of elastic are you using? Is it round or flat?
For this journal I used round. It's available on amazon in a variety of colors here: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07G3JDLTV/
Wow, this Bread Journal has turned out wonderfully! I love it - what a heirloom treasure to store all those happy bread recipes. I found the Bealtaine Bread recipe in 'The Bealtaine Cottage Guide to the Deep Midwinter' by Colette O'Neill who lives in Ireland. I'm going to try that toasting bread King Arthur recipe! I think baking bread connects us with all the generations and is a rite of mindful living and eating. You did a beautiful job with this and I love the closure! I've always wanted to learn how to make those rectangular word charms with glass - which are not technically "journal making" but maybe related enough to do a video about someday? :)
How'd I miss this? But thank you and Yes, I can teach how to make the charms...it's easier than you think. (Which I find is true of most things in life except maybe losing weight and going easy on the sweets!) 🤣
Fantastic 😊
Thanks 🤗 Hope you weer able to put it to use!
