Cumbria Way - Day 5: Hesket Newmarket to Carlisle
The final day of the Cumbria Way was once again, glorious weather... we couldn't quite believe our luck. With past experience of sodden Pennine and Nomad's Way washouts I felt I'd cheated the system. It would be all downhill from here and we were ready. With a stop at Dunston booked in for lunch we head out with a spring in our step. The sleep in the glamping pod had been just fine and we set out to finish the job. With stretches in woodland, farmland and a long stretch along the River Caldew, it was beautiful up to the last couple of miles, where it became less scenic and more industrial. That aside, we were happy to reach the finish having had little rain to worry about all trip, not to mention minimal injuries on the knees and feet well intact with minimal blisters to think of. We had a blast!

Cumbria Way - Day 4: Keswick to Hesket Newmarket

Day 4 kicked off with a stiff uphill ascent and although short lived it would not be the most challenging of the day. It was a day of adapt and overcome. The original route for this day ends in Caldbeck, but because there were no other rooms available when booking our stays, we adapted and booked our stay at Hesket Newmarket. It would not be the only adaption for the day, as we chose to scale C...

Day 2 started in much higher spirits than Day 1... the hangover was gone and the days walk would be much shorter and kinder with plenty of stops for breaks. There were a few stiff uphill sections but nothing major. The bacon and sausage butty and the Snickers tiffin were to die for on this day. All in all, a very kind, scenic and steady days hike.

The Cumbria Way, on the hangover from England's Euro 2024 exit couldn't have posed a larger more daunting task at the outset... but as the day grew longer the beauty and serene nature erased any memory of the night before. Emrald paddock and age old dry stone created a mosaic of green pathways and trails that cured and lured two lads further than they thought possible at such a low ebb as the d...

    This is very interesting to me as I've walked through this area 20+ times whilst doing the Elland Circular Walk(which starts and finishes at Greetland). It fascinates me, the whole story behind it. Summer of '22 some stone was being reclaimed but I think it's now left very much alone again.

    • @thenomadsteve
      @thenomadsteve Před 10 měsíci

      Yes, it's such a fascinating story. I do know they did reclaim some stone way back in the day, too, but the inaccessibility made it almost pointless, and it was abandoned. It's another gem of a period drama dying to be told on screen.

  • @richhughes7450

    I live about 6 miles away from the Ram. I went there in 1991. With a group of friends after other friends who went before seen all sorts and I thought I have gotta see this. One chap from the previous visit slept with a light on for months after and so we arranged to go and went to see the owner (he died a few years ago) he gave us a tour(about 5 of us) and explained the ghostly goings on. It's an ancient ex pub that's built on a burial ground and it has a priests hole in the Bishops room. After the nervous shrieks from some of the group, I distanced myself from them. I just looked around parts of the building where they were not. I felt draughts and heard creaks and noises consistent with an old building but nothing out of the ordinary. One group felt somebody touching their shoulder and seen a stone glow and heard voices etc. Some of girls screams and laughs made serious investigating hard. Then one ran out and then others soon did the same. I stayed in the building on my own and it was dead quiet. I walked slowly through every room and I then heard voices which fascinated me but as I looked out the window in the Bishops room(it's almost level with the road outside) I seen a couple of people walking past talking. It's a place thats pretty eerie and sort of a depressing feel to it. If there is such a thing as ghosts youd expect to find em here for sure. I was dissapointed I did not witness any real activity or any evidence. I want to be a believer but I've been to several ghost hunts back in the 90s but seen nothing but nervous people or fake artists lol. many have claimed to have seen things over the decades but how much of that was due to an overactive imagination or missreading the situation. If you are a sceptic like me that is not scared or nervous about the possibility of seeing or meeting ghosts then you most likely won't ever see anything. If your easily buzzed and somebody says a place is haunted, then you are likely to have your imagination run riot and get spooked by anything. Most ghost hunts are not seriously done just idiots having a laugh and making things happen to make good viewing. I'm not saying ghosts don't exist but I've seen nothing in haunted places I've visited.

    • @thenomadsteve
      @thenomadsteve Před 2 lety

      Lovely account Rich, and being honest with you, I am in the same boat. I am open to the possibility of their being ghosts and firmly believe they exist to be fair. I firmly believe that the plain they exist makes it very hard nigh on impossible to communicate. As a result I myself have had little experience of the paranormal. That being said, its existence still very much intrigues me.

      @@thenomadsteve That's an interesting theory you have. My best friend died in an air gun accident in 84 and about 8 yrs ago I bumped into his older brother after not seeing him for 30 odd years. He told me that he actually lived at the Ram Inn when he was dating the owners daughter and told me that things moved around rooms he'd being touched by something and voices could be heard and all sorts of weird stuff happened when he stayed there and swore blind that it was haunted. He's an honest what you see is what you get type. I won't believe in what I cannot see. Whatever people tell me, I take with a pinch of salt but many people have experianced stuff there and one punk or skinhead was said to have smashed the window in the Bishops room to escape something. Not all can be liars and not all cant have imagined what they experianced...... Or can they.
