I don’t know about everyone else but I see this song as an analogy for addiction. The love in the song is Ben’s addiction. Sleeping close to heaven is how you feel when you take stuff like heroin. The chorus and bridge is Ben falling back into addiction and wanting to get away from it but is so addicted that it won’t release him. That’s just my interpretation though, I would love to hear others thoughts on it.

When I heard this song the first time, I was stabbed in the back by someone close to me who I believed was "The One". I ignored parts of their character in my own fantasy of them, which was brought crashing down the moment they betrayed me. The song echoed in my head. The next few months, my body physically withered away and I was going to pass on, light as a feather and wanted to slip away into the darkness. luckily I recovered and stand stronger today. That will never ever happen again.
