Turning a Small Cocobolo Bowl 2-26-15
zhlédnutí 9KPřed 9 lety
Cocobolo or “Dalbergia retusa” is a true rosewood species ranging from Mexico to South America. Not only is it one of the most beautiful woods in the world, but it also works wonderfully on the lathe!

    It would seem its all about the soloist. People setting down a beat for him to do his thing. Seems pretty pointless. A lot of work for one guy to show off.

    Thank You Matthew... First time watching. Cocobolo I LOVE but I can not turn often. My skin just cannot take it. I react like a mild case of poison Oak, ugh! I am a machinist and turn wood only when needed for a project. Usually only small projects that need fancy handles. I like your polishing wax technique and I will try it for my future projects. Matthew I have an interest in threading wood. Have you ever taken your small turnings to the next level of having a threaded lid ? I have not but I do expect to practice with this idea in the future. TM

      I'm fortunate in that cocobolo does not give me any reaction, but I still try to limit my exposure. I have not done any threaded lids. In woodturning it either requires hand chasing them with special tools or a threading jig that I don't have.

    Damn Matthew, You make it looks so easy Lol. It's very obvious you've done more than a few bowl turns man. Great Job thanks for the video

    I'm new to turning but from all the CZcams videos that I've seen I think cocobolo is my favorite wood. It's gorgeous, and I like the simple finish you apply.

    I’m making 16 of these exact size cups. We deal with small washers nuts screws, etc... on my biomed team. I wanna give them out to my teammates to carry around in their toolboxes. No reason they can’t be beautiful, right? Hey btw, is that a 40/40 grind? Anyway solid work bud. Beautiful wood. 👍🔥

    Nice piece of work. Cocobolo looks great. I just wasnt too pleased with the very flat bottom. Could have been tapered better. And a nicer finish line.

    holding that blade in there is so dangerous. Finish the bottom the correct way , with tools

    2 coats wax finish, why not 1 coat in reverse?

    • @mdwwoodcraftings1
      @mdwwoodcraftings1 Před 5 lety

      I'm not quite sure I'm understanding your question, so let me know if I'm not on point! When I sand the pice, I reverse direction after ever grit, but when applying this polishing wax finish, I don't find any need to. Hope this helps!

    • @0dan56
      @0dan56 Před 5 lety

      When I worked with Cocobolo all I used was wax. It was one of my favorites, till I saw how the color darkened, and faded with time. By applying a coat in reverse it ensures coverage on the leading and trailing edges of the pores. Not that big of an issue. I like your work, just mentioned it. Carry on.
