Best Places in Galicia (Spain)
It's green like Ireland, bagpipes can be heard at folk festivals and you switch off when you see bullfighting on TV... Galicia turns the usual image of Spain on its head! It has its cultural roots in the Celts, not the Moors like the south. Here, where the Atlantic rolls ashore with mighty waves and nature is shrouded in mysterious morning mists, the people speak a different language than in Madrid or Seville, for example: calmer, softer and with a dash of melancholy.
Many visitors are drawn to the Rías Baixas: four fjord-like bays on the west coast, lined with beautiful beaches, vineyards and pine forests. The climate is sunnier and milder than in the rest of northern Spain, many beaches are sheltered from the wind and the water heats up to 20° C in summer. The counterpart to this are the Rías Altas on the north coast.
In the other areas of Galicia, however, bathing tourism plays a lesser role. Instead, the north coast delights visitors with its rugged cliffs and stormy capes - although wonderful beaches can also be found at these latitudes... Other treasures lie in the mountainous interior. There you will find pristine forests, dramatic gorges such as the Cañon do Síl, historic cities such as Ourense or Lugo - and Santiago de Compostela, one of Christianity's greatest pilgrimage destinations. Bufones in Pria, a village near Llanes. My village, my country. The place where I grew up. From the 50 beaches, you can see the first line of mountains 2 to 3km away just nearby. If you are courageous and want to see the top of the first 600m mountain, you can do it in 4h knowing the path, the other side is the natural reserve and you have to be careful to descend 4h too, and if you don’t have the material for camping then get off without delay and you’ll have time for a last drink of cider before night time. My family is from Italy, I grew up Italian American and went to an all Italian grade school. San Donato in Philadelphia. My family came from Roseto in Teramo, the best cooks on Earth. I’ve been to Italy extensively in my service to the US Navy and have been in Italy many times. However I have never had the opportunity to travel to Abruzzo, so when I do come back it’s a trip to my family hometown. The good thing I always asked is how are we Southern Italy if it’s level with Rome? Good education taught us that Abruzzo is part of the Kingdom of Naples. Was good to know. 🇮🇹

"Lake Chiemsee" is one of those self-redundant things, since "Chiemsee" is "Lake Chiem", so it's more properly just "Chiemsee", but I suppose that one could say something like "Chiemsee, the large lake between Salzburg and München"...nah, just Chiemsee....again, delete as you like. But i'm learning stuff, didn't know much about Bamberg (except painfully trying to drive around there! )
