Battle of Midway and making of the newest Midway movie.

We recognize the naval actions of 4-7 June 1942, the Battle of Midway, was one of the most significant events of WWII. This video not only covers the basics of what happened then but also discusses the escapades of one of our own docents as he assists award-winning director Roland Emmerich in the making of 'Midway' (2019). Since the adoption of our charter in 1998, The USS Hornet Sea, Air & Spa...

Tamalpais in Marin County on the North end of the Golden Gate can be seen in the distant background to the far right. The radio tower atop Mt. San Bruno can be clearly seen to the left of center .A must listen to interview is that of Richard Gueter 11th Airborne.

You all should do a story on the MarDet. They played a special roll on the ship even though embarked ship’s personnel did not care for us. I was part of the MarDet, USS Coral Sea, CV-43 from 77-80. The Hornet currently sits at the same pier we always tied up to. The Enterprise sat on the other side. Semper Fidelis.

I was the leading chief of the USS Constellation Intelligence Center (CVIC) when they were filming the first Midway movie. I had the duty one night and received a phone call that they needed a chief as an extra. However, there would be no pay and more importantly I would have needed to shave off my mustache, of which I was very proud. I decided not to do that. That was really the only incident in my 32-year Navy career (retired as a Master Chief) that I regretted. Just seeing myself on the silver screen, years later, would have been well worth shaving that fuzz off my lip.

Former OS1 here, 1981-1991. First ship was USS Tuscaloosa (LST 1187) in San Diego ... an Uber for Marines. Then off to shore duty at RTC San Diego as a Recruit Company Commander. Then to USS O'Bannon (DD 987) in Charleston, SC. Never served on a carrier. Never even BEEN on a carrier. Where is CIC located? (What level?)

Hi! Thanks for taking some time to send your comment. I've been a volunteer and paid staff person here for 18+ years and finished my brief Navy career in 1969 as a RD2. If I had reenlisted, I would have been an EW, not OS. If you are anywhere near the San Francisco Bay you need to visit us. Not only will you finally visit a carrier you will be able to see a restored "old school" CIC (pre-NTDS). On the Essex-class carriers, CIC was originally located in the super-structure, and was very small. The various upgrades/modernizations (late 1950's) moved CIC to the 02 level directly below the flight deck. If you want to connect you can email us at info@uss-hornet.org and ask to have your email forwarded to Keith.

I watched this on Memorial Day weekend and it really put me in the spirit to remember all those sailors who died far from home in World War II. Your video is a joyous celebration of Navy life, but it is set on that great carrier from the World War II era and just seemed like an appropriate video for our most somber holiday. Thanks for devoting your great talent to making it.
