Alia Atreides: Understanding An Abomination | Dune Explained
In-depth analysis of Alia Atreides, also known as Saint Alia of the Knife and the Womb of Heaven. She is the sister of Paul Muad'dib Atreides.
Like many characters in Dune, Alia’s story is a tragedy - maybe the most tragic one. Hers is a story about a woman predestined to destroy herself. Alia is an abomination and to really understand Alia and her suffering, we need to understand what it means to be an Abomination.

Stilgar's Story Is Darker Than You Might Think | Dune Explained
zhlédnutí 169KPřed měsícem
In depth analysis of Stilgar from Dune. Whenever I saw Stilgar in Part Two, I couldn’t help but recall a quote from the first book. While his fanaticism made some people laugh, for me, those scenes were a reminder of a deeper tragedy. Javier Bardem’s amazing performance brings out a more humorous side of Stilgar, making him a source of some comic relief. But while his zealotry may seem amusing ...

Dune explained. If you're a Dune fan, you've probably seen a lot of online discussion about the Golden Path. This term is the key point to the debate about whether Paul and Leto Atreides are heroes or villains; and for many people it’s the only justification for their terrible actions. All those wars and the deaths of billions; they were all means to forge this way. So, what exactly was this Go...

Dune Explained. Who are the Kwisatz Haderach, Lisan Al-Gaib and the Bene Gesserit? In the world of Dune, the concept of a promised savior is a reccuring theme. Whether called the Kwisatz Haderach, Lisan al-Gaib or just the Messiah, it all points to humanity's desperate need for a god-like hero. But with his Dune novels, Frank Herbert explores the dangerous side of this need. Because in the book...

People always told me that Otto tried to isolate Viserys from Daemon out of ambition. However… When has Daemon ever EVER shown Otto that he isn’t a threat to the crown?! Otto served as a hand for a long time. It was too long ago when two Targaryen brothers brought chaos to Westeros for ambition and war Maegor and Aenys and Aeny’s children. We know that Daemon loves his bro. But Daemon also loves power. Daemon is ambitious reckless ruthless merciless acts first thinks later, casually commits violence consistently. Why wouldn’t Otto think that Daemon is a threat to his much weaker older brother and to the realm? He’s not scared of Rhaenyra he’s scared of Daemon. And by medieval feudal standards he did what any father would do and secure the highest most beneficial, not necessarily happy, match for his daughter. The King is the most eligible man ever. So he secures her a the best match. I’m not saying he did something good as Alicent was not happy but that was what fathers did. And yes by Machiavelli from the Prince, in order for your reign to be secure you can’t have any threats aka potential heirs who can usurp you. In a world where male line goes over female line which Jaehaerys great council reinforced, as long as Aegon Aemond and Daeron live then Rhaenyra will never be secure especially when she intended to crown a bastard her bastard after her. Rhaenyra in the show versus the book may not have the stomach for kin slaying but Daemon who has no love for Otto or Alicent and by extension Aegon Aemond and Daeron certainly wouldn’t. He’s scared rightfully so as well. And even if Aegon chooses to be a figurehead we all know Otto is a competent leader and Aegon also has other people to provide good guidance such as Alicent Criston etc. people who know how to lead from experience. Rhaenyra will be influenced by Daemon who is not a good influence.

The quote "It was a lessening of the man" still hits hard no matter how many times I think about it. I've never read the books and in my watch between the first movie and the next, thought characters may have just been weaker, but this shows the writers intent and the warning you describe here. Also clearly the directors respect the source material and I am excited for more.

In the end, HotD is just a GOT reboot. Otto - Tywin, Rhaenyra - Daenerys + Cersei, Alicent - maybe a bit of Catelyn, Larys - Littlefinger + Varys, and Daemon who is just Daemon because I can't remember anyone he could be a parallel. Even if the show tries to paint her in a good light by using the "f&b was written by biased maesters" and changed some things, it doesn't change the fact that by disrespecting her alliance with the Velaryons, war would happen later anyway due to of succession issues with strong children vs daemon children lmao

Great essay. I didn't read the books, so there are some plot holes for me in the movie. 1) what is the role of psycoactive substances? on the one side, allows you to travel through the stars, on the other... they are missleading? he didn't wanted to become a religious figure until he drank the water of life but on the other side, the spice somehow gave him some visions that were "real" insights into the future. So it is unclear to me why the psychoactives are part of the story. 2) what is the role of asking his inner voice? When he discusses with Chani and Duncan 'cause he didn't want to go to the south, he asks his inner self/Jamis for guidance and then he gets the confirmation he should go south to drink from the water of life to "see from the highest dune, as far as he can". So the message for me here is: don't trust you inner voice if you have noble intentions. Didn't find it to be a nice message. I see the story goes beyond political/religious figures themselves. It is mostly the projection (and reflection upon) the western concept of "pax romana": the ideal (assumption/delusion) that if one person or one system can control everything, then all humans will coexist peacefully with each other. This idea is first conceived by the benne jessarit through politics (we are going to design the ideal ruler), then by Paul through personal righteousness (If I'm in power, I can create order) and off course by the Fremen through religion.

I've read the books and more I think about it I get more confused.this supposed to be a warning against Charismatic leaders with brutal actions so we shouldn't follow them blindly.but at the end, Paul's son became the savior of humanity and actually he was the messiah that bene Gesserit wanted to create.if Paul didn't take the throne, surely his son couldn't succeed in his mission right? Paul is the villain yet the people have no other option and they forced to chose him to be saved.

We are always being manipulated in some way. Your this so called your opinion of Herbert's Dune lesson is manipulation of how others see it into your view. The end Herbert says to be award balance make your own decisions but sometimes that requires self control and restrictions of the moment for future survival not equal to forced restraint. WW2 people chose to grow veggies to save for war not a forced denial of food. There is a difference in learning from a 'prophet' to learn your own choices vs mindless enforced behaviors with no regard to weighing to factors and outcomes

In the end the feudal system was abusive wrong and regardless the Bene Gesserit and messiah's, the oppressed in the form of the Fremen were going to REVOLT RISE UP. Even bigger problem is in people themselves, herd mentality, this is the biggest human weakness. We are social creatures and we feel a strong need to adapt witch allows us to live in harmony with other people. But this tendency has a negative side... It's better to be part of the herd and even if we're wrong we can all be wrong together, to be a black sheep is much worse. Individual is almost insignificant compared to a group that follows him.

Churchill was charismatic but did not lead Britain to mindless war he fought a war of defence and the very first election after the war ended he was out of office. Only Hitler is a representation of the point you were trying to make. A charismatic leader with a cult of personality who swayed millions to commit act of barbarism. The British acted out of self preservation, the Russians out of fear and ideological manipulation.
