Safety First, Last and Always | The Amazing World of Automobiles
By the end of the first twenty-five years of motoring history, Britainʼs road toll was in the thousands, and something had to be done to curb the terrible cost associated with the centuryʼs newest invention. The earliest seatbelts caught on in the 1950ʼs, three-point belts becoming law in some countries (including the UK and Australia) due to their effectiveness in saving lives. Speed limits, air-bags and stability-control technology are some other ideas that have been beneficial for safety, although air bags have the potential to cause injury and even death in children, something car manufacturers are working on to try to eradicate.
--
Around the time Henry Ford was building his first car, Ransom Olds, father of the famous American Oldsmobile, was also building one. However, Ford established the forty-hour working week within his factories and introduced mass production via his moving assembly lines, heralding a new era for the industry.

Each year, thousands more cars are introduced to our roads, filing our air with harmful pollutants and using up precious resources. In the last ten years car manufacturers have been working on ways to cut carbon emissions and save fuel at the same time - the result so far has been hybrid cars such as Toyotaʼs Prius and Fordʼs Fiesta E-kinetic. One possible solution is the eventual replacement o...

BMW has long been associated with motor-sport, its BM1 division devoted to creating cars that can outperform and outlast their competitors while sticking to the designs that have made BMW one of the most sought after cars in the middle class, prestige market. Join us as we chart the lives of some of the most important names in the automobileʼs short history - men who have raced them, designed or built them, and as a result have become icons in their chosen field. Probably the most influential man - particularly in the early days of motor cars - was Henry Ford. He founded a company that became a vast international corporation, and remains today one o...

Since the automobile was invented, men have raced them, pitting themselves and their cars against those of other countries in all kinds of races and conditions. The first races were feats of endurance, the most famous being Le Mons. The first French Grand Prix occurred in 1906 at Le Mons and was before the concept of a closed race track. After WWII, motorsport became a team affair, and drivers ...

We look at the advent of the machine that has kept us on the road over the last century. Since the earliest days, motoring has not exactly been cheap. In the beginning, it was only the rich who could afford wheels, but then Henry Ford changed the way the world moved. Originally, the Tin Lizzy cost $850, but eight years later, with production efficiencies, the price dropped to $360 dollars. By 1...

In the earliest days, roads were where horses pulled carts, but as cars came along, gravel gave way to cobblestones, which in turn disappeared as the modern roads were paved with tar. Roads became more durable, but that did not stop the intrepid traveler who wanted to explore more inhospitable terrain. The first four-wheel drive was created in Amsterdam in 1903. One of the first 4WD systems was...

    The Pioneer Zephyr, ran by the Burlington Route, was the first one I learned about as a kid, was in so many books...probably because it was the one that raced to the '33-34 Chicago World's Fair, against the UP M10000. Now, while it was modern, convenient and offered many amenities a commuter train didn't offer in the era, this was still the height of the steam era, in the mid 30s. Steam was doing every bit of the speeds these were doing, in fact, PRR and NYCRR were hitting 100mph, much of their routes between NYC, and Chicago. And food on the 20th Century LTD wasn't cheese sandwiches. LoL Great to see this get more attention and potentially run again, I'm very excited for that! Sad the original powerplant won't be rebuilt...I know manufacturing and fabricating parts isn't cost effective. :/ but, be great to see her roll. :)

    14:15 I do apologize for my English. I am a Ukrainian American. We have 4 children. This is cheap advertising is aimed at rich wimps who spoil their children. Children need to be loved and pampered until school age. As soon as the child goes to school, the child must be loved, but not spoiled. Parents and teachers need to show interest in everything the child does, how the child reads, solves mathematical problems, and honestly admires the child for everything the child has achieved through his or her labor. This is life psychology. You should not give your child expensive things, especially phones, gadgets, and cars. You must be able to feel your child and motivate him/her to strive for a quality of life. So parents don’t have problems like Hunter Biden in the future.

    It's too bad that the US couldn't subsidize St. L like they did with the military industrial complex. Boeing Vertol proved that they couldn't build a good trolley even when subsidized to do so. The world licensed the PCC design and we turned our back on smart urban planning and transportation...

    The Industrial Revolution started with textile manufacturing. Steam-powered motor drove the spinning and weaving machines that made fabric and clothing affordable for low income people. During the agrarian, feudal era most people were peasant farmers and clothing was very expensive. Now it is Aston-Martin, Rolls-Royce, and Bentley who are making automobiles for the super wealthy.

    • @HoldfastAndDeliver
      @HoldfastAndDeliver Před 29 dny

      If I recall correctly, the last scheduled run of steam (by Union Pacific) on Cajon was in 1948. After this the engines assigned to the Los Angeles basin were quickly reassigned and replaced with the freshly delivered FBM and EMD diesels. In 1950, a traffic rush combined with the worse than expected performance of the FBM diesel helpers necessitated moving a small number of steam engines (4-8-2s and 2-10-2s) back to Cajon in helper service until the following year. By 1953 UP steam should have been all but gone, but the Santa Fe stuck with steam a little longer.
