    If one is printing and the final product is an 8.5x11 what paper size should one start with so the end product is 8.5x11 in other words given the bleed and the trim what standard paper should one print on?

    I can’t remember from your initial video talking about this project- but have you considered rings? You could add different papers in whatever order you wanted and different ephemera as you go. There are lots of opportunities for design and personality. I can’t remember if this is totally no buy - but you could use book binding rings to hold it together. It’s really fun watching it come together!

    Wow, this was cathartic and vulnerable. Setting creative goals aside feels like you lose a part of yourself. My heart goes out to you with all the things going on in your life. The path of an artist and satiating the constant need to create is never an easy one, but I couldnt imagine people like us living any other way. Here's to the rest of the year, however long it may be, and whatever it may bring ❤

    It's lovely to hear your reasoning for diving into pens and inks. My friend also had the same journey where she replaced all her Pigma Micron fineliners with a single fountain pen (a special nib type called a fude nib to get all the line widths she required) and a waterproof fountain pen ink (her preferred is De Atrementis Document fountain pen ink, mine is Platinum Carbon Black fountain pen ink). I cannot wait to see what your opinions are in 6 months for the glass dip pen and your current fountain pens. I have the FWP Carousel fountain pen in both medium and fine nibs. I prefer the fine nib for my sketching, even with shimmery pastel inks. I also journal tons for mental health. It's another avenue to use my fountain pens and enjoy the inks I have. 14 drawing challenges! Wow. I think the max I've ever done was 2 drawing challenges simultaneously. I've stuck to the same one for the last 2 years, but it does have the motivating factor of a weekly giveaway.

    • @PencilandPigment

      I swear I never used to have this problem with Microns. It's been happening the past 5ish years or so. Great recommendations, I'll have to look those up. I have so much more research and art supply reading to do (my favorite). I hope you have a wonderful week!

  • @stationerystream
    @stationerystream Před 2 měsíci

    Totally agree, the glass pen is so pretty. I almost bought one! But I was worried about breaking the tip, and I already knew how to tune nibs (dropped a fountain pen once), so i opted to go for a more challenging dip pen with nib holders. Now I have an interesting selection of nibs too! I've yet to delve into proper calligraphy inks despite having the tools for it. I do have a Ferris Wheel Press Calligraphy ink, but the acrylic base is more of a hassle to clean than I expected because it dries chalky on the nib. I usually have to take to it with a toothbrush. A far cry from the usual swish in water that water soluble inks have. A good idea for water colour! I need to try that with my dip pens. I have quite a few water colours that would work.

    • @PencilandPigment
      @PencilandPigment Před 2 měsíci

      Oooh, I bet you have some amazing nibs. I'll have to read up on their Calligraphy ink. Watercolor is so much fun. I hope you have a wonderful week!

    Hello! Fountain pen enthusiast here! I love watching first experiences with pens since it helps me recapture the awe I had when I first started. I couldn't help but notice you're using Windor and Newton Drawing ink, which is shellac-based. Shellac-based inks tend to clog the feed of the pen (rollerball or fountain pen). It's the shellac that makes the ink waterproof, but also the shellac solidifies in the teeny-tiny ink channel that brings ink to the top of your pen. I worry about your rollerball being unuseable because of this. Don't try to wash it with alcohol (usual method of cleaning shellac-based inks), because it can melt the plastic feed. I'd recommend washing out the rollerball with water ASAP to ensure useability, and switch to a common water -based ink such as your Ferris Wheel Press fountain pen ink or the cheaper Diamine or Pilot or Waterman fountain pen inks (no particles, water-based, non-waterproof). Alternatively, you can use your Majestic Maple Syrup ink but don't shake it before hand to ensure you don't suction the shimmer for your rollerball pen. I hope your rollerball still works! And I hope you really enjoy the fountain pen experience. if you'd like to see more efficient cleaning methods of fountain pens, I have an Instagram reels series on fountain pen maintenance (yse, I'm a fanatic. I love cleaning pens).

      I'd also recommend always re-capping your pens when not used for 1-2 minutes because the tip dries out quickly. :D It's now a habit for me.

    I found using a glass dip pen way more intuitive than I expected. I'm just always afraid I'm going to break it, despite it being pretty solid so far. If you decide you like fountain/dip pens for the future, I can definitely recommend Diamine and Private Reserve inks. They're very cost effective, and I love how they write.

    I journal ALOT too. You might consider bottled ink and fountain pens for that. It’s made things a TON cheaper for me. I’m not sure if I’m ever going to finish the big bottle of Heart of Darkness. Kakunos are inexpensive and they’ve lasted over two years. It’ll cut into your budget to start off, but it has been really worth it. Oh I guess your paper would have to conform to fountain pen ink too. I appreciate seeing how you negotiate your budget. It’s really helpful and gives me ideas for my own budget.❤

      Or at a pinch, just refill your dry/empty Pigma Microns or Pitt pens or uniballs… despite being “disposable” pens, you can easily pull the nib (if they’re still good) with tweezers and refill with India/Bombay ink which has the benefit of being cheap and waterproof! Voila… working pens for not much extra $$$…

    I’m 42 and have no kids and don’t really spend money on anything else (excuse first). I have a small room with a few lockers and boxes full of art supplies. I added it all together this last month and realised I had spent £15k over the last decade on art supplies 😵‍💫 about £30 a week. Which is the original and sale prices so it would be worth a lot more now. Edit: this included things like lamps, drawing boards and easels and scissors and every last thing I have in my art room. It was crazy how much bits and bobs like erasers and rulers all added up. I felt a bit shamed by it. But then I suppose lots of people spend £30 a week in the pub or getting nails done etc. I haven’t been on holiday in that time. So today I got a couple of art supplies to fill holes in things where I was really missing a colour I needed and vowed to try a year no buy. I don’t know why it’s scary; it’s not like I need anything. I’ve given some of those supplies away in the past. But yeah art supplies can really add up over time 😮

    • @PencilandPigment
      @PencilandPigment Před 2 měsíci

      Furniture type art items make the whole thing add up SUPER fast and with the price of art supplies it already feels like a lot. A No Buy is such a strange physiological thing for the brain to wrap its mind around which is why I chose to document it. You can do it, you're already taken the first steps. Good luck and I hope you have a wonderful week!

    I see the gorilla! I need to try painting in my Hobonichi. I love the crinkly look of it. I feel very similarly about rolls of paper. I bought a roll of Baohong professional grade a year or so ago, and I've still gravitated to just using pre-cut paper. It's a great deal, but it's such a pain to cut and flatten. I had trouble actually getting even cuts, too, because it kept trying to roll up on me while I cut, no matter how much I weighted down the edge. I suspect that the heavier the paper, the worse the curl, and this stuff is 300 gsm. I probably wouldn't buy it again unless I found it for super cheap. (Like the giant roll of Canson XL mixed media paper I got for $15 on clearance. It's $50 on Blick, so that's the kind of deal I can get behind!)

    • @PencilandPigment
      @PencilandPigment Před 3 měsíci

      Oh wow, that sounds like a ton of work to cut. I never even considered paper weight as it pertains to roll format. Wow, you got an amazing deal on that Canson paper. Great job! Good luck with the paper and I hope you have a wonderful week!

    In general it is quite possible to illustrate with nib/dip pens, there are artists that use(d) them exclusively or for contour work. But it will be a vastly different experience from ballpoint or gel pens. You need to pick nibs targeted at drawing, not writing, to avoid the flexible calligraphy nibs for example. And you'll need to get used to the different flow of ink just after dipping and as you progress through one "dose" of ink. It is a bit of a challenge.

    i see your point about protecting your art. my approach to that title is different. my creativity is on life support because of me. i had intense inspiration. every day was a new day. during the pandemic my eyes were cinematic and i saw the whole world as a living breathing painting. it was the pinnacle of how i always saw the world. it left one day and i felt empty since then. Then i figured out the hell that is lightfastness and realized there is almost no reason to create from your soul if it is going to fade or hardly last. I already don't share my art at the moment. my instagram is photography which is art technically and i love doing. my art would be either boring to people because it is the magic i see in everyday life. or it would be the far other side and be too fetishy or simply just too perfect of a world to be believable. i actually want the world to see my entire universe, but i cant really create my universe atm. i am lazy and its the opinions from people that are why i will probably never share anything. Artists are supposed to just purely express themselves. So it almost seems best to just die and be discovered the old way. i want to be a famous artist i think and i want to get all my ideas out. but being empty and the lightfast BS has put an end to that for the moment. Sorry, i realize this is not exactly the point about protecting your heART that you were making, but yeah. To your point i think if i ever did get around all that and start making stuff again and somehow pushed it to where i was in galleries and known, i would still possibly make some art only to be found after i was gone.

    You’ve done so well with your no-buy followed by low-buy! The two shopping times per year seem to work well for you. In 2023, I attempted a low-buy and did well for about 6 months; overall I spent less money than I would have if I hadn’t attempted a low buy, but the last 6 months were not as intentional as I had hoped. 2024 is another low-buy year for me and so far I have bought nothing. I have gift cards from Christmas/birthday that are just waiting for when I run out of gouache colours that I need on a regular basis (i.e. white or a fave mixing colour). I think I’m more prepared for my higher temptation shopping period this year knowing that it happens during the second half of the year. I find that all it takes is one purchase for me and then it’s a slippery slope 😂.

    Any thoughts on gold gouache? Obviously this will likely use a different application method but since you already paint, I was curious what you thought. I am trying different brushes (sumi, dagger, etc.) to see if this helps me to blend drawing and painting better.
