Crimea with its 75% Russian population, was not essential to the integrity of Ukraine but it was a prime objective for NATO/US because with it went control of the Black Sea... An independent Ukraine presented a strategic opportunity for US/NATO as suggested in Zbigniew Brzeziński 1997 book, "The Grand Chessboard" where he suggests using Ukraine as a battering ram against Russia. This was the plan orchestrated by US/NATO and Ukraine was used as a proxy... After 3 waves of NATO expansion, I hold the minority opinion that Putin did the right thing.
