Leonard Bernstein told the television audience at the start of the first young People's Concert: "No matter what stories people tell you about what music means, forget them. Stories are not what music means. Music is never about things. Music just is. It's a lot of beautiful notes and sounds put together so well that we get pleasure out of hearing them. So when we ask, 'What does it mean; what ...

of all his masterclasses this is the one i'd skip. composers and academics were( and still are ) obsessed in NOT allowing their precious music to have other meaning. it's very limiting mentality especially for children and it is indeed for the sake of making one feel lesser than. i love him in these young people's concerts series, but his obsession with musical ambiguity( whic he also very verbosely puts out there in his lectures at harvard) is not my favorite thing.
43:45 - 44:06 is the greatest part of this video. I have never seen this video until I now. I have to watch it for my Music Appreciation class and I'm in love with it.

Miserable video and audio quality
62 years ago. tv was much worse than film. This was made in 1958 one year before television started in my home city in central Australia. It started in time for the Melbourne Olympics in 1956 in the Eastern States. video tape didn't start till the sixties.
