Honestly the fact that this joke just described a real TV show without even meaning to kind of speaks to a pretty narrow understanding of how media works. Like; beyond the Eva comparison, plenty of other shows which were already out at the time tackled more down to earth themes while containing elaborate sci-fi concepts. These two things are only opposites if you assume science fiction can't have themes in the first place.
Explains why it's god awful and people only like it because they're depressed and it "speaks to them", or because they're pretentious and they think making a story convoluted and weird for the sake of it is artistic.
The show can be both. It doesn't have to be one or the other all the time. Make some episodes that are off the wall with magic robots and some other episodes that are more grounded and relatable
This joke never made sense. You could have both. Literally, the Simpsons did it. There were episodes like where alien dolphins took over the world, and then there was an episode where Bart gets bullied.
As a young teen, i always thought those anime were "intellect (and morality) enhancers" for mistreated, misunderstood, unappreciated gentlemen after a week of being treated like punching bags, and that everyone else were just stupid tasteless assholes, and that some media ( especially "slice-of-life" media) was just for said "stupid tasteless assholes". Obviously, ive never even heard the word "escapism" yet, and i was yet to see just how stubborn the adult world really was.
As if sinji acted like a normal person and the series disnt devolve into an acid trip at the halfway point. And don get me started on the remakes, those make me sick
And that how Evangelion born😒😒😒
They love it till they see auska
Bart: I'm so fucked up, man
This alone proves The Simpsons has a clip for everything
Anno: Whenever SEELE is not on screen all the other characters should be asking, "What's SEELE up to?"
I loved the part where Bart was impaired by the spear of longinus and promptly disemboweled
Cruel Angel’s Thesis plays in the background…
Doom Patrol (2019)

There is not one character that is realistic in that show. It's just that depression exists in the real world and that's as close as it is
You have a really easy life if you think none of these characters are realistic
Neon Genesis.. Down to Earth.. stop drinking with Weeberade.
You CAN actually do both. Just real problems in a fantasy setting. It's not like people problems fundamentally change.
Congratulations
The simpsons predicted the popularity of anime in america.
The children yearn for depression
Remember that Hospital scene from The end of Itchy and Scratchy? Still can't believe that Scratchy did that.
ALSO, YOU SHOULD GET INTERNET CRED BY WATCHING IT!
NO THIS IS FLCL
And you get depression by watching!
Yeah right depression and big human clones trapped in suits that where cloned from two big beings called Adam an Lilith

So Gurren Lagann
> Gurren Lagann > Realistic life problems Pick one.
Futurama‽
It’s honestly shocking how accurate this is
Japanese are smart that they did this questionnaire 10 years ahead of the Americans.
America is just socially 50 years behind lol.
tambien podria ser bersek
Kids dont want that much edge. They already have tables for that
And thats why they rebooted Battlestar Galactica. Well done kids
but none wants to watch shinji
Don't forget the sexual stuff

Regular show
I feel this could also describe Futurama...
How do you know this is a NGE reference?

The best part is the video description
Just Sayin: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Don't forget the religious symbolism that means absolutely nothing and is there to look just to look cool.
Im 100% sure that predicted rick and morty
I watched it and didn't like it. Rei was the only god part. Gurren lagann though is still my #1 anime of all time.
Attack on Titan 👌
evengelion fans..
Star Trek: The Next Deep Space Voyager
So, Chowder
Regular Show in a nutshell
Too mainstream
As if sinji acted like a normal person and the series disnt devolve into an acid trip at the halfway point. And don get me started on the remakes, those make me sick
I'm 38 and never heard of it.
Bro just described regular show
