Jhol Momo Recipe | Jhol Achaar | Nepali Momo Soup
The popular Nepalese meal known as "Jhol Momo" blends the mild flavours of momos (dumplings) with a hot, acidic soup called "jhol." This unusual mix produces a filling and cosy dinner that is appropriate for any occasion. Using pre-made momos, this recipe will enable you duplicate this Nepali treat at home, regardless of your level of culinary expertise.
Ingredients for Jhol
To prepare the flavorful jhol (soup base) for your momos, you'll need the following ingredients:
Ready-made momos (steamed or fried)
2 medium tomatoes, chopped
1 onion, finely chopped
2 cloves of garlic
1 inch of ginger
1 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp chilly powder
1 tsp garam masala
2 tbsp mustard oil
Salt to taste
4 cups of water
sesame seeds or peanuts
Step-by-Step Preparation
1. Dry Roast sesame seeds and peanuts.
2. Sauté Onions, Garlic, and Ginger
Next, add the finely chopped onions, garlic, and ginger to the pot. Sauté these ingredients until the onions become translucent, creating a fragrant base for your jhol.
3. Cook the Tomatoes and Chilies
Add the chopped tomatoes and green chilies to the pot. Cook the mixture until the tomatoes soften and become mushy, integrating well with the onions, garlic, and ginger.
4. Add the Spices
Incorporate 1 teaspoon each of turmeric, cumin, and coriander powder into the mixture. Stir well to combine the spices, cooking for an additional 2 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
5. Blend the Mixture
Once the mixture is well-cooked, let it cool slightly before transferring it to a blender. Blend the mixture until it becomes a smooth puree, ensuring a rich and cohesive base for your jhol.
6. Simmer the Sauce
Return the blended mixture to the pot and add 4 cups of water. Bring the sauce to a simmer over medium heat, allowing it to cook for about 10 minutes. Add salt to taste, adjusting the seasoning as needed.
7. Prepare the Momos
While the jhol is simmering, prepare your ready-made momos. You can use steamed or fried momos, depending on your preference. Arrange the momos in a serving bowl, ready to be drenched in the flavorful soup.
8. Combine Momos with Jhol
Pour the simmering jhol generously over the prepared momos, ensuring each dumpling is well-coated with the rich and spicy sauce.
9. Garnish and Serve
For the final touch, garnish your Jhol Momo with fresh cilantro. You can also sprinkle sesame seeds or crushed peanuts for added texture and flavor.
