I did not want to learn English, but I found out that I had the ability to understand this language when I was more than 30 years old. When you reach middle age, forget what you did as a child. I have two languages at my native from my childhood and I know what real language means. English is my real fourth language from my youth without knowing that I have the sound of this language in my head. One day this language appeared in my life.

I disagree about dubbed shows. I understand what you're saying, but they are still great for learning. For me it is an intermediate step. I am at a level where I can learn more from an American show dubbed in Brazilian Portuguese than I can from a Brazilian show. After learning from the dubbed shows, then I can advance to the Brazilian shows.

    • @KevinAbroad

in my little experience with the method is best to uses something like kohii and put your own keywords in your own native lenguage because if you try to do it in english you have two jobs remember the key word in english and in your own native lenguage specially if it is a weird word.

I used koohii quite a bit for story ideas! As for doing it in your native language, it depends. I'm fine with doing everything in English so it doesn't bother me. But yeah if English isn't a comfortable language for you, it's better to do it in your NL!

I agree that this "one-size-fits-all" approach is quite short sighted, and I'd even say that apps that claim to offer many languages are probably not going to be that useful. Because languages have unique challenges. Some languages have harder grammar than others, some make listening comprehension trickier than others, and of course, some have a different writing system. Trying to standardize the learning process for them all into just one app is not really feasible.

    • @KevinAbroad

Kevin! I was going to ask you where the heck you've been, but since you mentioned you've been working on a big project for the last four months I'll assume I've got my answer 😉 I was recently in Japan too, and my language experiences were similar to yours, although I can easily beat your "four years at upper-level beginner" status; I've been at it off-and-on for at least a decade! Although it was my third trip, this time around I always initiated conversations with natives. And as all the experts say, it wasn't my lack of grammar knowledge that impeded my communication attempts, it was my limited vocabulary. And when you're trying to "produce" conversation, passive vocabulary (by definition) is not your friend. I am more convinced than ever that "life or death" total immersion in a language (basically the way we all learn our native languages) is the most efficient and effective way to acquire language. Anyway, the trip was full of language insights and I'll be looking forward to hearing more about yours too!!! I hope your next video will not be so long in coming (am I being judgemental? YES!!) 😆

Helpful video! Many thanks to the author of the channel for the recommendations! The problem with many people is that they want to take a "magic pill" or get "secret knowledge" and immediately have skills and abilities. However, the truth of life is that knowledge, skills, and abilities do not come by themselves. You can't learn a foreign language without doing anything, without wasting your time and effort, just like you can't learn to ride a bike lying on a comfy couch, listening to lectures and watching videos about "modern methods of learning" on a bike. To really learn something, you have to really practice every day. You're going to fall down while you're learning, and you're going to get bumps - that's normal! The ups and downs of learning are an integral part of our lives. Motivation from success and depression from failure will always be your study companions. However, every student has problems in his or her studies that he or she lacks the knowledge to solve. It can be: poor memorization of words; no progress in language learning; the student can speak, but does not understand speech by ear; misunderstanding of grammar; incorrect pronunciation, etc. Agree that a problem you don't know how to solve is very demotivating. In order to find the answer to our question we have to spend a lot of time to read videos, articles and books by polyglots. In today's world, we have to solve problems as quickly as possible. I don't have time to study and analyze a huge amount of information. My goal is to master the basic knowledge of a foreign language as quickly as possible and already start earning money effectively in the international arena. I settled on the practical guide by Yuriy Ivantsiv " Polyglot Notes: practical tips for learning foreign language". This book is always in my bag. If I have a problem while learning a language, I quickly find the answer in this book. There are many different techniques and tips for learning a foreign language in Polyglot Notes. I have made my own individual schedule and plan for language learning. Now I know what I am going to study, how I am going to study, when I am going to study and what results I am going to achieve. No problem could stop me! With an effective language learning plan my professional skills are more and more in demand internationally every day. Friends, don't stop there! Everyone has talents that millions of people around the world need! Learn the language and make your ideas and dreams come true! Thanks to the author of the channel for the informative and useful video! Your videos motivate me.

Imagine teaching some English to Japanese natives, coming across the following sentence for example “The brothers are coming” and then telling them the sentence is pronounced ザ ブラダス アル カミング….100% wrong…lol so I definitely agree one should not relate pronunciation of a new language to one they know as it will likely be incorrect. This books seems like an interesting concept, considering I learned Japanese with the sole purpose of consuming content (since I have never set foot in Japan). Good luck on your Japanese studies :)

Can u sound native if you are a native in an English speaking country but spoke another regional language in your childhood, before switching to speaking English extensively in adulthood?

@@KevinAbroad I observed this too, it seems that even tho they barely speak English before adulthood, the shared culture and growing up experience with other native speakers could help greatly for them to sound native.
