In 2005 we invited a group of our favorite artists to try their hand at creating a series of narratives featuring their characters and street iconography. Many of the artists had never tried adapting their work into a storyline, so the project became equal parts challenging, exciting, and ultimately extremely creative and rewarding. The results of this experiment have been published in our firs...

He then creates life-size paper portraits of strangers and friends alike, each a complicated and original drawing, to honor the originality and comple...

    lets clear this up...the concept and the book is created and art directed by Mervyn Kurlansky who hired Naar and Mailer. Mailer and the distributor walked away with the idea. But it is Kurlansky idea who shared rights with Naar only. The book original title New York Graffiti NL/Watching My Name Go By UK...is done by Kurlansky with Naar. Not Mailer !

    Lets clear this up. The original title is New York Graffiti (NL), Watching My Name Go By (UK)...the concept and art direction was created by Mervyn Kurlansky who hired Naar and Mailer. Kurlansky only shared the rights with Naar. But the US distributor and Mailer walked away with the book and released in the US under The Faith of Graffiti...for the past 50 years Mailer and Naar have been selling the book as it is was theirs...while in the US edition there is hardly any reference made to Kurlansky until the final page. But it must be said this book is 100% by Mervyn Kurlansky with Jon Naar.

    obeys images back in the day really blowed my mind, i was at a point in my life where i knew there was something wrong with the world and things werent right like there was people pulling strings and everything i saw wasnt exactly what it was portrayed... that obey image really struck a chord with me and to see how far hes gone as an artist and econimically its pretty amazing how a website really launched careers

  • @deadkennedy210
    @deadkennedy210 Před 11 lety

    good olll swoon..i remember they would interview artists back in the day on this site and would ask what they had in their pocket at the time.. that question always stayed with me lol

  • @deadkennedy210
    @deadkennedy210 Před 11 lety

    i remember i discovered the site back in the day and it was refreshing to my young mind, it was like i realized i wasnt the only person with subversive thoughts and it was nice to see artists express their subversity with clever imagery..but then how it became a vehicle to mainstream recognition and riches it kinda killed it but thats ok because everything that kicks ass ends up being corporate....
