The poet notes that her voice was sweeter in her youth, when she was young and beautiful, but as time passed and she became involved in the struggles for freedom, protesting alongside ordinary people and rising her voice, it has become harsh. The second person mentioned in the poem is Padraic Pearse. He was an educator, writer, and poet of Irish literature during that period, and had a college of his own. He was also a participant in this rebellion. The third person the poet mentions in the poem is a helper of Padraic Pearse, with whom WB Yeats was also acquainted. His name was Thomas MacDonagh.
