During World War II, BBC Radio broadcast live church services.
George Thalben-Ball was organist and choir director at Temple Church in London. On this Sunday, the service ran short of time, and so to have no dead air time, he was asked to fill in with some organ music to fill out the hour. He improvised and after the program had finished, the switchboard had many calls requesting to know what this beautiful piece was. Thalben-Ball wrote his improvisation and it was published in 1944 as Elegy. It is used frequently at funerals and solemn services.
