Deer University Episode 078 - Predicting antler size from doe body weight
zhlédnutí 749Před 28 dny
Show Notes - In this conversation, Bronson, Steve, and Mark Turner discuss the relationship between doe body weight and buck antler size. Mark's research at the University of Tennessee aimed to evaluate how deer body and antler size varied across the eastern US and what habitat characteristics were associated with bigger deer. The results showed a consistent relationship between doe body weight...

  • @johnhardin5168

    My food plots are in Weyerhaeuser leases, so there are a lot of pines. My clover fields die every year in the Mississippi droughts. I plant in the logging staging fields so every 10-15 years they get wiped out and I have to start over. The soil is destroyed in my plots from the scraping and leveling they do, plus leaving tons of bark and chips. It takes a lot of inputs to get it back. In the first years, would you suggest Crimson before I go back to Ladino? I’ve also use Marco Polo is a lot of success. Persian gets crowded out easily but the deer do love that stuff. My plots are in Calhoun County and Webster county.

  • @johnhardin5168
    @johnhardin5168 Před 16 dny

    I plant ladino every year. Our Mississippi drought wipes it out. I pour the the lime to it annually and I keep my PH consistently above 6.

    I really enjoy this channel and the knowledge and insight that your guests and educational personnel offer BUT you guys failed miserably on this video. First! You should introduce your guests initially so that they are setting there like an idiot waiting on the idiots that invited them. AND you should not use She when she is present! Very rude of you “gentlemen” you should’ve introduced the lady first and then we could’ve heard from dumb dumb that can’t do math. Shame on you guys, where’s your southern manners! Hope you fix this in the future.

    Regarding the deer movement in daylight hours - You’re not factoring in the total number of daylight hours declining during the hunting season. Deer are obviously going to start feeding more at night as there are simply increasing dark hours. Look at the chart Afternoon vs Morning in October vs December and change the colors to one color and you’ll see almost the exact same distribution over both months. Show the same chart as a time scale and you’ll see it’s a total # of daylight hours scenario vs pressure. Love the vid!

    I live in an area where logging is common and sometimes the DNR will spray herbicide on a clearcut when they're changing from deciduous stand to an evergreen stand. With food plotting being so common, it might be a good time to study deer health in areas of active herbicide/pesticide use vs areas of no herbicide/pesticide use. Might have to start out with weaned fawns to get accurate results on the control end.???

    I know it doesn’t impact the south YET, but MSU needs to start providing research and education about wolves. Non-managed wolf populations have decimated the northern 1/3rd of what many consider the holy grail whitetail state of Wisconsin. The wolf is spreading rapidly into Central Wisconsin and even the southern portion of the state. Packs of 20 plus animals are destroying the deer population in my neighborhood of Waupaca County which historically is a top trophy buck area. Nothing is being done 😢
