The Blue Danube Waltz, September 21, 2023
"The Blue Danube" (full name is On the Blue and Beautiful Danube River, German is An der schönen blauen Donau) is a waltz by Johann Strauss II, composed in 1866. First performed on February 15 in 1867 [1][2] at a concert of the Wiener Männergesangsverein (Vienna Men's Choir Society),[2] it is one of the most popular pieces in the classical repertoire. However, its initial performance was considered only a minor success,[1], and Strauss is reported to have said, "The devil has taken the waltz, my only regret is the coda - I wish this episode was successful!”
After the original music was written, lyrics were added by the Choral Society's poet, Joseph Weyl.[1][3] Strauss later added music, and Weyl needed to change some words.[4] Strauss adapted it into a full version for the 1867 Paris World's Fair and it became a great success in this form.[1] The instrumental version is the most commonly performed version today. An alternative lyric version was written by Franz von Gernerth, "Donau so blau" (Danube is very blue). "The Blue Danube" premiered in the United States in an instrumental version on 1 July 1867 in New York and in England in a choral version on 21 September 1867 in London during a promenade concert at the Covent Garden.
When Strauss's stepdaughter, Alice von Meyszner-Strauss, asked composer Johannes Brahms to sign autographs for fans, he wrote down the first pieces of The Blue Danube, but added "Leider nicht von Johannes Brahms" ( "Unfortunately this work is not by Julian Brahms").
