CFD Simulation of Rotor Vortex Ring State

A CFD simulation of a rotor from an Align T-Rex 250 model helicopter descending into Vortex Ring State. Simulated using ANSYS 14.5. At t=0, the airflow is moving past the rotor at 2.2 m/s, then t=0.05, the rotor beings to accelerate towards 4300 RPM, creating down wash and descending into VRS. Part of my final year dissertation on helicopter aerodynamics.

    If i see this i understand more about how many fish are using the same technics for swiming. Their energy is far less then we use to put a boat in a moving direction. Wat is you use this principe to power a boat.

    Initialize everything with 0 (except temperature = air inlet temperature). Run simulation with time step of 0.001 seconds for few time steps (2 is sufficient). Create a small cell register overlapping the region where the fuel is within flammable limits (ch4 molefraction within 0.045 to 0.147). Patch progress variable = 1 in this cell register. Continue simulation for 10 more time steps. Then you may increase the time step to 0.05 seconds.

      PUNKISINTHEDETAILS Re will vary throughout the domain depending on how you measure it. 100Re is from the inlet velocity, the constant viscosity and the diameter of the cylinder.

      I try to patch a high temperature zone and some combustion product and the combustion occurred. Why you didn’t use any patch settings in this simulation but it is still fired. Do you use ignition or some other setting ?

      Yuze Sun I can’t remember, this simulation was done in 2014, but I do remember I just followed the ANSYS tutorial and it seemed to work just fine.

    This is very nice. In real world, you see truck platooning on highways. It will be interesting to see 2 or 3 blocks/ bluffs simulation, just like see 2 or 3 truck on highways!

    The T-Rex has two blades. and it shows the downwash column is very steep. I would be interested in additional CFD results, in case the helicopter would have3, 4 or 5 blades instead of two (same lift forces of the rotor circle). The interesting question would be, how the downwash column would look like in these cases. I guess the outer vortex would bend a little outside and the VRS would impend at lower speeds and descent ratios. I really would appreciate an additional CFD simulation for comparison.

      Ilmawan Yanuarsyah I can't remember exactly as this was over a year ago, but if you follow the Von Karman street vortex shedding tutorial within Star-CCM+ it explains it quite well.

      Bruce Wayne Hi, sorry but I can't remember the exact computer specifications. But I seem to remember it was a quad-core machine, 16Gb of RAM with an intel-i7. It took around 5 days to complete.

      Hi amien tk, I followed the tutorial within ANSYS on combustion (Can Combustor tutorial) and just modified the initial conditions to create a transient analysis (0 - 3 seconds in 0.05 second time-steps)

      Thank you. If you go into Help and then Tutorials in ANSYS and load up the Can Combustor one you can complete it for steady state step-by-step. I have just modified it for transient.

    @womackke Try going to ''Import'' under the file settings, I think I used import KES or raw image or something like that. I didn't work 100% as the file I downloaded showed it with grass on the ground and other sections which were not imported. Hope this helps, if not message me back.
