Welcome to my artful and commonplace channel.
Like gouache? pastels? printmaking? art journals? or just art supplies in general? Then come join me on my art journey!
Or perhaps you enjoy journalling and commonplacing, come and see how I create my own.
A bit of Background on myself.
Hello am Spirit-Lee (Yes that's my real name, if I had a penny...)
I am an Architect officially (Day Job). But I do have a strong background in crafts, Graphic Design and art, in general, have always been common threads throughout my life. I have now been nicknamed by my contemporaries as the crafty architect because I have broken away from the screen-driven process when producing designs by mixing traditional ways and then adding some digital. Working this way provides an opportunity for me to make products from my Architectural designs and observations that I can now share with you for your enjoyment and inspiration.

Can you link the little image u got off of etsy that is on your first page?
Do you the Sketch version of the man from the front cover?
I was brought here by the algorithm and I'm so glad it did as I love your style of journaling! I've barely touched my Cousin this year as I keep getting too in my own head about it and feeling like each page has to look perfect and it becomes a chore. I really love how personal your journal looks to you, it makes me want to reassess my whole relationship with my own book, so thank you for the inspiration! ♥
Wow thank you for your kind words, I’m glad this has inspired you. Just remember your book is yours no one has to see it, so doesn’t have to be perfect or even completely filled in can have days, months missing, it completely ok. It took me along time to find a system that I actively want and even get excited about filling in.
Your Hobonichi looks so cool! I really like your style of journaling. How do you print your photos so your dairy does not look very bulky? I've tried once scrapbooking in it, but it was so hard to write in it after only one month of pasting photos :(
Thank you! Yes the bits of packaging I put in made it hard to write ✍️ they maybe a few tiny holes where the pen went through lol but I still like to do it. The paper I use is either standard printer paper 90gsm with Gloo to stick em down or I use Epson photo quality sticker paper which is matte rather than glossy. Or am using up the last of my clear glossy vinyl paper. Hope this helps. Do you think I should do a separate video explaining how I print and what supplies I use?
👍
Hi, I just found you from this video! Did you or will you finish this house? I’m planning on starting this right after I move into my new place at the end of this month. I love your videos also. Informative and relaxing 😊
Hello welcome! I will finish it, I have a few videos filmed just need to edited and will continue with it as I love it. Thank you and hope you enjoy building too!
your videos are so relaxing to watch.
Thank you
it looking so good now seems a long time back this was started.
It really all is coming together, yes the partworks has now finished and complete its just am behind on the editing as usual. But I have decided to go ahead with the Christmas/summer extensions so still a lot more to come.
Love the template you’re using; where can I buy it?
Unfortunately, it came a subscription box, so you can’t buy it separately. Perhaps you can get hold of something similar? Thanks for watching, much appreciated.
What kind of tea is that? Looks lovely
Hi thanks for watching, the tea is Bird and blend SPICED PUMPKIN PIE TEA, there’s different ways to make it, but I love my method.
That's a lot of art also first for everything
I was hoping you were going to do this video! I just got my first Hobo! and was unsure how to approach it. I love your laidback energy, to many protectionist Hobo keepers on CZcams.
Thanks 🙏 I can only be me. I would love to see what you get up to in your Hobonichi?
😂🎉
What convinced you to try out rings? like the variety of the seasons and I guess the variety of the systems haha wow the rings are so much bigger than your book it's interesting that you don't like the wasted space in the binder - very obviously a problem but idk how much I've thought about that aspect oh man having the right hole puncher is important the little printed flare decoration looks very functional! if it's for a forest theme maybe you can add some tree related stuff in the upper corners like a little floating island with trees on it and a waterfall? idk what really goes with the theme that will look different every time with a template haha - I was thinking kind of like how when someone does a big Minecraft build they make like 40 trees and then copy a few of them in hundreds of different combinations throughout the space they need to fill one thing that might be cool is a few different contents sections designed for the theme people are going for - I don't necessarily mean something like memento mori but it might be interesting to play around with the layout for something which is mostly a journal, scientific collection, quotes, etc I hope the sanding goes as well as the cutting! I will say that the first and last page in a binder always force their way out of my binders eventually - it takes hundreds of uses though
Yes the variety, as am hoping my research is going to feed some of my artwork so want to also put different papers as I start working on different concepts. Am used to working on A1 A0 drawings so A5 always seem small to me it boggles my mind how people can A6 Hobonichi’s etc plus a lot of my Skecthbooks are B5 and makes sense to go a bit bigger as you have to make room for the rings. I like the idea of a forest theme, I just wanna refine my branded version first as like a base and then do different themes later (currently tinkering with a summerween ideas) thank you for all you thoughts and ideas I really appreciate your suggestions. Hope you enjoy what I produce next.
@@studio.spirit looking forward to it!
Omg ❤ in my country they started only just now! I would love to see more videos of you making it 😊😊!
What country is that? They have stoped in the UK and just started again 🤷♀️
@@studio.spirit Czech Republic :)
looking good.
Still amazes me every time I look at, can’t wait to see it finished.
really like the places you stay in also your journal.
I really dislike the arches oil paper. I am still trying to figure out what medium to use it for, but for oils or even acrylics it's a no for me. It absorbs SO MUCH that it makes you use twice the amount of paint to be able to blend anything. I tried oiling out an A5 piece of arches paper and the amount of linseed I had to use was ridiculous
Thanks for sharing! I assume you mean oil paint? 🎨 so far with the oil pastels it’s been lovely butttttt I prefer the sennelier paper.
Fantastic review, thanks for being so thorough
Glad it was helpful!
This was fascinating, watching this process! My favorite part was the sketchbook with the tracing paper pieces, to see what changes you want to make. I'm a watercolorist, and will use this idea in the future! Thanks for sharing. 🌻
Glad you enjoyed it!
That is probably the best looking step stool I've ever seen! Also, love the door. 🌻
Really? 🤔 I have to say it is ageing really well I thought it would all be scratched by now.
Very curious how the studio turned out! I know this is an older video, but how did the Barcelona project end up? 🏢🏛
By studio do you mean the one am in now? It turned out pretty much as I planned. Barcelona Project only got to the tender and the client went with another design, which they still haven’t built. (I had to re watch the video as it has been awhile, and why do I sound American? lol) thank you for watching and engaging I hope you will like my newer content.
@@studio.spirit I do like your newer content, that's why I went back through some of the older things. Excited about the art deco architecture!
🏢🏚🏘🏛!!! What a fascinating concept! Can't wait to see what the artwork looks like. Thanks for sharing.
You and me both! Thanks for watching.
🌸🏛️ this is such a joy to watch, can’t wait for more!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. More will be coming!
I watched this video and it convinced me into buying one (the red edition). I bought it in a shop in Switzerland for 97£. I am in love with this machine. What convinced me to buy one is, that you can replace the cutter-unit once it gets dull - so it's really a sharpener for a lifetime. And I love I can sharpen pencils sharp and coloring pencils blunt. I have the option to change it continuously adjustable. No other sharpener has this option. You would have to buy many different one to get the same results.
Wonderful! Glad you got your hands on one. They are a joy to use. And as we both said will last a lifetime.
🌸🌺
Amazing review. Everything I needed to know!
Thank you glad you found it useful.
Wow! I think this is your longest Video! Love it! Great to have you keep me company while I draw. Please do more like this, I love hearing about your granny hobby too!
More to come!
what a beautiful journal you have got! I love your set up and the early morning sun, it is so cozy. It has been wonderful to journal along your video
Thank you so much!
cool video really like some of the places you stay in.
Glad you like them!
Did you say Mars Violet? I cant find that Luminance Mars Violet. Are you sure you got the right name? 🤔
You are making me question my sanity… am at the other end of the country ie no where near my studio. Can’t check my sanity till I get back.
lol had to check online otherwise I wouldn’t sleep. In the Derwent Drawing range it’s called mars violet. But the colour is the same in the Luminance 093 grey violet (dyslexic brain)I get them mixed up. Sorry hope this helps.
@@studio.spirit hahahhaaa... sorry about that! 😅 Gray Violet, gotta u!
Whoa! F-bomb dropped around minute 24. Really not needed or wanted.
HOW MUCH
lol yes that much, but I don’t regret it at all.
I’m just back from Edinburgh to London but visit Scotland (the islands more so) a lot. I’m a whisky and beer person. So visit their distillerys/distilleries.🤷🏽♀️. I’m black female born in the U.K. but have a Celtic West Indian dna based heritage… my people taken enslaved to the Caribbean and 400 years later plus the “Windrush” invite bought my parent to England. Yep it’s all in my DNA. There is nothing English. Only get Scottish, Welsh and Irish. Of course lots of African black, I look and am black even with 35% Celtic DNA, my gene pool only exists outside of Africa in the West Indies/U.K./USA. All stated as context to audience *type* fun. As you are curious like me. But I do do planners Kinbors more so now, Filofax, Lego adults 😅, actually Lego Lego, Diamond Painting, Cross stitching, cash stuffing Digitally but keep paper records, also art so Scrawlr box, OhhDeer (cancelled subscriptions now), spend insanely on water colour, gouache, acrylic etc and art drawing supplies as hobbies. My day job is insurance😅. Funds all the above. Next trip there Islay or Aberdeen.
Wow your DNA background is an interesting mix, thank you for sharing. Regarding planners am starting to experiment beyond Hobonichi of course I’ll share my finding in the commonplace archives. “ i love me a bit of Lego” lol I have a set that I keep meaning to do but not quite round to it. Just started another cross stitch project I talked about in ep 09 so I think I’ll keep people updated with that. We have very similar hobbies and fund spending. Thank you for connecting much appreciated, hope you like what I come up with next and look forward to hearing from you again.
Fun fact: Irn Bru Xtra is actually the sugar free version, so I don't know what they add to it to make it so sweet but it's sickly. Original Irn Bru for the win every time. Fab to see your trip to Scotland, being from near Glasgow you visited some of my favourite places!
Glad you enjoyed my video. Thanks for the fact on irn Bru.
@@studio.spirit You're welcome. I'm a bit of an Irn-bru addict lol, believe it or not it's the same recipe across the UK but it tastes different depending on the 'container' whether it's the plastic bottle, can or (best of them all) the traditional glass bottle. I live in Staffordshire now, and always make a point of having a glass bottle of Bru when I'm visiting home as it just tastes better lol. In B&M/Home Bargains in England, you can sometimes manage to find a glass bottle of the 1901 recipe Irn-bru which from memory has a cream colour label - if you happen to see it, I would definitely try it! Forgot to say in my first comment, Kelvingrove Art Gallery is a stunning building and you could definitely spend a full day in there exploring. If you're ever back in Glasgow I would also recommend the People's Palace. Holmwood House is another beautiful building designed by Scottish architect Alexander Thomson.
👏☺
really liking these videos
That's hilarious! The pencil sharpener - there was always this exact one, albeit bigger, in our classrooms! Yes, a long time ago😂 still watching ....
Thank you for the video. A good variety and fun. Loved the unboxing. I have some dot pens and am amazed as to how much I use them. Liked the look of the air B & B. Good luck with your video studying and hope you get the results you want for you videos. Though for me I enjoy them as they are. Have a good week and until next time. Take care. :)
Thank you for your kind comments, even with my one day ‘cinematic’ videos I will still make videos like this, I enjoy these types of videos because it gives a peek behind the curtain and I always learn more from that, hope others do to. You take care too.
Keep them Coming!
👏👏☺
ARtists Gouache is not usually light fast as they are for designers who photocopy their work. If you want lightfast then you have to by artists or professional Gouache.
👏☺
I love these types of videos kinda like behind the scenes. Are these Replacing Studio Vlogs?
cool video
Is it 6 quid each issue, or 6 quid each package? If it's 6 quid each issue, it's going to end up costing me 700 pounds for the whole thing, that can't be right can it?
Hi it’s £9.99 per issue and a total of 110 issues so £1100 in Total standard (premium is more) (see the letter at the beginning for more details)These partworks are not cheap, but you can’t get this anywhere like this. It is a hobby within itself. I make these videos because I enjoy it and I have a whole diorama planned within my library for this and the videos are for everyone that just want to see how the builds goes and are perhaps building along with me and want to see how am going to customise it, to perhaps give people some ideas.
😉👏
what a cool little art box maybe you could use some of the foam you use on arm chairs to pad out the top of the box to stop parts jumping around inside.
Good idea 👍 thanks.
Wow! That’s fantastic!!
