Should I do them for a month and then wait and see if it still hurts to have surgery?

    • @SabrinaFeltych89
      @SabrinaFeltych89 Před 9 lety

      XxKayla77xX 1 to be perfectly honest, you're probably experiencing arthritis, and surgery could very well make that worse. It never hurts to resume the stretches, just to rebuild some muscles and things that might be getting weak. My surgeries all went well, but I kept getting reinjured. My ligaments weren't strong enough to be held together, which we basically learned through the first and second surgery, and the third surgery ended up with a large amount of bone screws and about a mile of fiberwire (according to my doctor lol) - and now, a year today after my third and final surgery, my ankle has essentially fused itself. Long story short, I really don't recommend you do another surgery. The more they mess with it, the more problems can arise. I do wish you the best, don't be afraid to come let me know how things turn out :)

  • @RebeccasColouringArtandCrafts

    So glad to have found this I am predicting a 4th surgery on my left unstable ankle! Did a high ankle sprain wasn't diagnosed for 18 months got a little better with physio went to start at the gym was limping a bit physio asked to look at it and he wreaked my lateral ligaments as it was swollen like a balloon the next day! Since then I have had 2 physios tape it wrong one cut off circulation the other caused my current injury which I am predicting is going to result in a 4th surgery As my ankle is as unstable as before my first surgery but twice as painful. What I had first was a brostrom - gould and screws in the syndesmosis (tib fib) Then it was screw removal and then I had to have permanent wires in when it re tore again. Then it came good and was going well till I injured my mid foot going to the beach and mentioned it to the physio who taped it a week later I couldn't walk on my foot it was so bad and still is. Every step I take my ankle gives out and I have tearing pains in the ligaments which haven't happened for awhile I am guessing cause they are gone and have had a podiatrist my current surgeon sent me to say there is no point doing what he wants cause if I have to have surgery something different will need to be done after it! So there is no point and I am going to see a proper foot and ankle person on Decemeber 16th now and am so hoping that something can be done as i have been living with ankle problems for 9 years now and have wasted most of my 20's being stuck at home cause of my damn ankle. Anyway thanks for listening and how are you going?? Did the tendon replacement work?? Am not sure but am guessing that will be what I get next since the brostrom has failed or I am certain it has anyway Look forward to your response!

      That's pretty much what I had done both the first and second time - the surgery took about an hour and a half or so each time. so my ortho told me i tore every ligament to my ankle but were currently trying to see if it will naturally heal so he gave it 30 days, its day 20 and i've seen no improvement, i still can't stand on it at all, i still can't bend it to the sides at all and i still cant move my toes, we have confirmation from 9 xrays that i didnt break anything. Can anyone give me an estimate on when i would be able to do anything with, or without surgery?? im starting to get ancy lol any knowledge or wisdom would be greatly appreciated, i've been on couch rest sleeping in the walking boot keeping it elevated and every 4 hours icing it for 20 min, all the while taking my anti inflamatories and keeping it ace rapped for compression. Again any help would be greatly appreciated

    • @SabrinaFeltych89
      @SabrinaFeltych89 Před 10 lety

      I had snapped two of the three ligaments on the outside of my ankle. They say if after a month (regarding pretty much any injury I've been told) you're as healed as you're going to get. I went nearly 4 months between my initial injury and my initial surgery, and I was told that I shouldn't have waited that long because the longer you go on an injury, the more you can end up causing long term damage to that part and the rest of your body, which has to compensate for your injury. I suggest consulting either your doctor or another doctor if you haven't seen any improvement. I'm three surgeries down at this point (as I write this I'm on my last day of bedrest from the third surgery), and I have to say that you can tell when it's really healing. I hope that you can get it looked at and get some sound advice on it. From personal experience, I say you should try to get some professional help for it, especially if you have such limited mobility. I wish you the best. It sounds like you're doing well with the icing and elevation, but you do need to go see a doctor (in my opinion).

    • @SabrinaFeltych89
      @SabrinaFeltych89 Před 10 lety

      Brian Ropel The first surgery was the easiest one for me, of course, but due to the condition of my ankles and the natural weakness of my ankles, I haven't yet had a successful surgery. Because I've been through so many surgeries at this point, I will always have extremely limited mobility, so I can't give you any personal experiences I've had with that. From what I've heard from people who had similar surgeries to me that were successful, they were able to start running regularly at about 6 months (that's how long the doctor usually makes you wait to all out run). I believe you're allowed to jog sooner, which will help build up the muscles that have been neglected during recovery. The main thing is just to listen to your body.

    • @brianropel
      @brianropel Před 10 lety

      from the first surgery did you get to experience the scar tissue breaking that they do in rehab?? thats one of my biggest fears.

    • @SabrinaFeltych89
      @SabrinaFeltych89 Před 10 lety

      Unfortunately my insurance doesn't pay for physical therapy (which probably contributes to me having had three surgeries so far), but from what I understand some of the scar tissue has to tear and re-heal in order to regain full mobility. It's pretty much the same as exercising, when your muscles hurt afterwards but if you do it enough they don't hurt anymore. Like I said, though, I've not been through physical therapy so I'm not entirely sure how it goes. I'd suggest asking your doctor or physical therapist. I wish you the best!

    Did you lose any range of motion? I'm considering surgery but I want to be able to squat again

    • @SabrinaFeltych89
      @SabrinaFeltych89 Před 10 lety

      I apologize for the delay in my response! I just had a third surgery last week, so obviously I haven't yet had a successful recovery (not my doctor's fault). I will say that between my first and second surgery, which was about a 10 month period including the post-op and everything, I did have limited range of motion. What my doctor told me is that when they go in and start messing around, that's always going to be a possibility. I'm at point now where my ankle has been pretty much rebuilt using tendons and fiberwire, and with each surgery my range of motion grows smaller. When it comes to considering surgery, I strongly recommend considering a couple things: Will physical therapy help or is it worth a shot? How bad is your pain on a day to day basis? Is the pain only worse in certain situations? (For the last one - I wear a dual set of braces on a daily basis once I get past a certain point of recovery, and though I have to wear them all the time in order to be able to walk, some people only have to wear one brace during high impact exercises) I wish you the best, and again I apologize for the delay in getting back to you!

Lol the only issue I am having is walking down steps and some swelling here and there which is getting better. Also it wasn't actually my Achilles tendon they worked on, but another one on the side of my calf (forgot the name). I have two nasty scars and still some numbness though, which is the trade off for having some major stability now! I'm glad I'm on the mend and thanks again for all the info!!

    • @SabrinaFeltych89
      @SabrinaFeltych89 Před 10 lety

      With the stiffness - that's something that comes with being casted and not using the ankle for an extended period of time usually. If you were given stretches to strengthen your ankle post-op, you should do them again. If you're doing them and still experiencing the stiffness and pain, you should talk to your doctor. I'm glad that's the only issue you're having though! I wish you luck. If you find out anything else that can help that you should let me know!

Being a product of the 70's, I have deffinatly seen the transition from a slow paced society to an in your face go, go , go world. Cell phones , social media, advertising amongst other things have really changed the stress level in people. Unfortunatly I don't see us ever slowing back down, so we mist learn to adapt. I hope everything heals up well! In the end, it would have been better for me if I had just broken my ankle. I wouldn't have had all of these problems with recovering, nor needed another surgery after the first. Also, my insurance doesn't cover physical therapy...My advice to you is to definitely take it easy - listen to your body. When a body goes through something traumatic such as a broken bone, it's very hard on it and it takes it a while to get back to normal. Be good to yourself, and be patient as well. Good luck!

      Well, both of mine I felt...a LOT. I haven't seen any pictures of what they did with me, but I can feel the difference between the two surgeries. I remember the first day after my second surgery, I could feel how much it was tightened inside of my ankle with fiberwire, and it hurt A LOT. I have a pretty low pain thresh-hold, though, so I don't know how well other people handle it.

  • @cantbebothered76
    @cantbebothered76 Před 10 lety

    Hey there.....so I'm on day 3 technically of recovery and I am doing great!!! Immediately after and the first day of recovery were very hard for me- EXTREME pain! Initially it was outpatient surgery but I ended up having an allergic reaction to the anesthesia so I stayed over night which was a tremendous help as far as pain control. The only issue I'm having now is that the half-cast and wrapping seem sooooo heavy and I'm worried that I may damage something hopping around with the crutches or walker they gave me. I get a little sore after that but really no pain other than that. Did u have that issue....also was there any worry about how you positioned your foot for sleeping? I'm keeping it elevated no matter what but I have difficulty sleeping on my back. Thanks again!!!!!!!

    • @SabrinaFeltych89
      @SabrinaFeltych89 Před 10 lety

      I had to have mine elevated both times, and yea, it's pretty uncomfortable, but if they came down when I slept it got super painful. I ended up using a beanbag because it created a divot to hold my foot in it. My soft cast was pretty heavy, but I am pretty lucky because the bathroom is right next to the bedroom. I always used the crutches though. I've had a lot of practice on them, so I don't struggle really using them.

    Omg...thanks so much for that info. It was extremely helpful. My doctor did warn me about the pain. I don't think the QB is an option for me but he did say he would make sure I was completely numb for the first night at least. I will def let u know how it goes! Thanks again so much!!!

      I wish you the best, please do keep me posted. Like I said before, I haven't had to have an allograft, and hopefully I won't have to...but if I do I might need to come to you! Even if you're going to be numb for the first night...still take the pain pills. For the first three days, take the pain pills every 4 hours (or as they say), regardless of whether or not you feel you need them. My first surgery I let the pain get out of control, and I woke up the first morning screaming in agony, and it took over a day to get the pain back under control. Feel free to email me if you have any other concerns, or if I can help you in any other way!

    This is exactly what I am going to have done in less than 24 hours. Exactly how painful is the recovery?? How long did the procedure really take? They cant use my own tissue for the repair though, they have to use cadaver tissue.

      The recovery is no walk in the park (literally). It hurts, and it hurts A LOT, especially in the first week. My words of wisdom for this surgery is to stay on top of your pain meds. By this I mean set the alarm for every four hours for the first couple of days - even in the middle of the night. I learned this the hard way my first surgery, when I decided that I didn't need to take any pills (cause I was so doped up on IV Pain Meds). The second surgery...I followed the instructions. Next, request a Q-Ball - it's a catheter pain-block that you bring home with you - in this video I show it. It goes into your leg. It lasts a couple of days, and you can adjust how much you need. I STRONGLY recommend this, as it is an additional way to control the pain without narcotics. The actual procedure for my first surgery (I have been told) took about an hour and a half, and I believe that for the second it was closer to two and a half (if I remember what I was told). Being in the recovery room can take over 1+ hour(s), but you won't remember most of that. I barely remember the drive home either time, and I only remember snippets of the rest of the day. I am sorry that you have to have an allograft...as it stands right now I've only had to have two different types of the modified brostrom, and my second surgery was basically wrapping my ligaments in fiberwire. If the surgery that I just had fails, then I'll have to have the allograft. I wish you the best...please let me know how you do.

    How long before you could put weight back on it?

      @SabrinaFeltych89 Před 10 lety

      Well, for my first surgery it was about a month, but for the surgery that I'm currently recovering from I've been told about 2 months from the surgery.

      Yea, it sucks...hopefully it'll be worth it or I'll have to have a more drastic surgery. Keeping my fingers crossed.

      my Anterior is partially torn. The doc was very quick to recommend surgery. Im gonna hold off and do some PT.

      @SabrinaFeltych89 Před 10 lety

      Yea, if it's only partial you could very possibly benefit. My two were completely snapped the first time, and the second time they pulled back apart on two different days. I send you my best, I really wouldn't wish surgery on anybody.

    Well, the doctor told me 6 months after surgery you should be able to engage in strenuous physical activity, though at like 4 months you should start trying to build back up the lost muscle and everything. I wish you luck, let me know how things go!

    I'm getting ligament repair for both sides of my left ankle. Sucks that it went unnoticed after a small hair line fracture while playing volleyball, two years ago. I suffered from constant ankle insatiability and pain. How long will it be until you can officially engage in physical activity?!

  • @SabrinaFeltych89
    @SabrinaFeltych89 Před 11 lety

    Yes, it was two ligaments on the outside that I had completely torn. If you've torn them, they'll either begin to heal within the first few weeks, or they won't heal at all, which requires surgery. I hope you had good news...keep your head up!

    The walking boot was pretty nifty - I was being bad and walking on the casts as well (which you shouldn't do, of course). The black brace that I wore was an ACE support that I got at Walgreens, and under it I wore a white compression sock thing that I also got from there. I really recommend both, I wore them both simultaneously for the months before my surgery and a few weeks after I was able to remove the walking boot.

    The healing process was pretty smooth. One important thing is to stay on top of it - even if you're not hurting when it comes time for your first few doses of pain killer, take them! I skipped a couple cause I was still under some pretty heavy painkiller from the surgery, and when I woke up the morning after...I was in EXCRUCIATING pain. I didn't do showers - I did baths, but with my casted foot out. I'm not sure how you would go about with 2 casts...I'd say invest in a shower seat.

    This is helpful... I fell and twisted both ankles and tore ligaments in both ankles in October of last year and the doctors didnt realize I had tears until June -.- They told me I need surgery but couldnt schedule me until the end of August so this whole injury is gonna take me a year to heal from. How was your healing process pain wise? was it difficult to shower?

    I hope everything goes well - mine wasn't from a break, but it was pretty cruddy. I've had a great recovery, I hope yours does okay also!
