It's Everybody's Business
The vegetation of the Klein Karoo and adjacent Riversdale coastal plain area is unique. Approximately 4500 species of plants that occur nowhere else on earth are found here, in three internationally-recognised, biodiversity hotspots - Fynbos, Succulent Karoo and Valley Thicket. This, along with the empty landscapes, the seascapes, the solitude and the silence, make this a very attractive area for tourists, especially those from more crowded parts of the planet.
But the Klein Karoo is also an area that is water stressed. Rainfall is naturally low, but damage in the water catchments, and along the rivers, has not improved the situation. In 2011 therefore, the Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve (GCBR), was established. It's a community-based initiative that aims to protect, and restore, the natural environment of the Klein Karoo, while at the same time, encouraging the continued, healthy growth of the local economy. This film sets out to tell this story.

Succulent plants are mostly found in deserts and semi-deserts. They have devised an amazing number of strategies to survive the extremes of typical desert conditions. About half the succulent plants on earth occur in Southern Africa. Follow three succulent enthusiasts in Namaqualand as they look at how some of these plants survive.
Loved this documentary! Any sequel with this group?
Absolutely fantastic! Thank you for this.
I do really really enjoy this video ! It has brought me a new fresh idea of succulents in South Africa this beautiful country . Thanks for sharing your wonderful experience with us again ! 🥰🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🙏

Love all things succulent. Thank you for posting and it's very interesting to see a lot of my succulents in the wild setting.
Oh this is just fantastic!
Excellent documentary on succulents; commentary delivery is awesome 👌
If i go there, can i pick them?(only seed or the babies)
A “Fenestraria” só é encontrada na Namíbia? No Brasil 🇧🇷 existem algumas espécies de suculentas que eu não estou conseguindo identificar.
Is a marvelous video about these super special plants
Thank you so much for this. I enjoyed every minute.
This was fun to watch, been repotting and learning about my plants that I grow in pots growing in nature from around the world, was fun getting about an 80% naming rate as I watched.
Another group no one talks about but exists are the Nicolettias. These are succulents, which can move to follow trace water. Plants like Echeveria, Titanopsis, Crassula Ovata, ect. All send out aerial roots. These roots allow for these plants, to detach from the base of the main stem and set roots in another location. This allows the plant to slowly move, to a more preferred location. Taking advantage of light, water, shelter. It us more complicated than this, these are the basics.
It is unfortunate that these people were unable to identify the plants they filmed to the people watching this video. Less prestigious people have done this successfully.
this is fantastic, thank you so much
no names! no infos!
Que maravilla , es lo que yo quería ver y de pronto aquí está , su hábitat lugar de nacimiento de estás maravillosas suculentas y demás como los liptos estoy fascinada, gracias por mostrarlas.

I've never seen such wonderful, amazingly positive yt comments in my life! You are all awesome viewers indeed. I also love this highly informative documentary.
EXCELLENT presentation...really outstanding!
Look at all those quartz crystals too!
Excellent, excellent video. I had the grand pleasure to tour these areas back in 2002 with some of the most knowledgeable succulent experts of their day. A trip I will never forget. The whole experience was life changing for me, and I ultimately moved to New Mexico since so much of the landscape was so simular to South Africa, although the plants are quite different. If you get the chance, take the trip, its well worth it in so many ways.
Amazing documentary!, thanks!
Semi desert? Dang! I'd hate to see what your idea of a full desert is like!
The Sahara and Gobi come to mind.
Climate change = weather.
I live off grid i dont have a tap but carry water from a lake near me but every sommer the water in the lake gets lower and lower but i still water my trees and grow my plants so i see no hope for us all
this must be on smithsonian or something, is so great!
This was so fun and entertaining. My friends willl absolutely love them. They love succulents
Beautiful! Great job! Thanks.
Marvelous documentary!! Thanks 💚💚
Oh what a bad influence.
I enjoyed this film so much and I’m grateful to see from afar so many plants that will never grace my windowsills or local plant shops or botanical gardens. Just wonderful. Wonder Full.
Succulent enthusiast here!! 🙋🏾♀️💚
