Great video Keith and very good speaker. 😀
Thanks Roy!
Hey Keith, I'm looking to buy a 1HP 3 phase motor with 1440 RPM for cutting cast iron pipes on a saw machine. There's no coolant used and the environment is very dusty with the dust being metallic hence conducting. Which enclosure type should I go for? Also would appreciate if you could suggest a good motor brand for my application type. I'm from India by the way. Thanks.
Thankyou
Very useful information Thank you
I have not looked through all your videos yet but all the settings on an overload are a bit confusing. The tiny explanations in the multi language packet sometimes refer to a symbol that doesnt mean much to someone learning or uninterested. Leads to guessing at adjustment. Thanks for your videos.
Hi Rob, thanks for the comment. Hopefully this video was helpful.
I have a late 60s 2 speed motor that has been swapped to a drive. When slowing in an unloaded direction (possibly reverse loaded for slowing down with a regen resistor) it chatters and hiccups some runs. I believe the motor is high slip but low info on the data tag. Also possibly a gear box problem. Any suggestions? Thanks for your video.
Hi Rob, this is highly dependent on the type of two speed motor and how the speeds are selected. In order to diagnose a high slip situation, I recommend watching the output current. The magnitude of slip is proportional to torque and thus the output current.
YT algorithm seems to find these great tubers..
Thanks!
Are most VFD's capable of converting single phase to three phase? It looks like you just use L1 and L3 as the input, then oversize the VFD, is that correct?
Great question. I just did a video on this topic. Check it out here for my notes on how to use a VFD to convert a single phase to three phase czcams.com/video/skEaxx5YJbI/video.htmlsi=_5QgNz3fmsxQYiGZ
Whether you oversize the VFD depends on the motor horsepower. In under 3 horsepower, you can usually find a single phase VFD (ex. 3 HP three phase motor, 3 HP single phase VFD). Single phase VFDs are harder to find in larger sizes so typically, you'll source a three phase VFD and double the size (ex. 10 HP three phase motor, 20 HP three phase VFD).
VFD's Can also be used to create 3 phase supply for motors from a single phase input.
This comes in handy when you have single phase input (common in residential and some commercial applications). Check out the video I just created on this subject: czcams.com/video/skEaxx5YJbI/video.htmlsi=QHBAtly4EbqMlSWI
Keith, how about details around removing the grease drain plugs. How do we access grease drain plugs without removing the fan housing covers? Also if the motors should be running when we grease, how is it safe to do this with covers removed? Why do motor manufacturers make it so difficult to remove the grease drain plugs? Does this mean they don't want us to grease them? Thank you
does VFD reduce overloading?
VFDs can reduce overloading due to their increased efficiency and reduction of inrush current however mileage varies significantly based on the specifics of the application.
Thanks for your reply, I have a centrifugal pump that pump 50% glycol and I'm near the edge of overloading (according to OEM), Can i use VFD to prevent overloading?(Even at cost of a small reduction of the head)
Nice and important video
How I run three-phase motors on single phase: line and neutral from single phase is connected to connection 1 and 2 on the three phase motor, and then I will take a standard run capacitor and connect it to line two and three on the motor
If water hole motor is 13.7 amp. (23.7 amp is what is on the motor plate written) what amps i have to set on overload switch please?
Excellent video, very informative! Thank you Keith.
Motorcycle starter... Bike started intermittently. Cleaned up the wires/insulated bare spots, put it back together according to the manual. Now operates in reverse. Help...?🤔
Hi Collin! Great question. Motorcycles are outside of my area of expertise (I deal with industrial electric motors). You may be better off to reach out to the dealership or a motorcycle expert.
Hello I bought a counterclockwise 48VDC NIDEC 140-22-4004 for a steering hydraulic clockwise Vickers pump. Any chance of changing the motor rotation?
You should be able to change the direction, based on the info provided.
Why on my motors is the copper plates wearing out and not the carbon brushes ?
There are a number of possibilities, either arcing, exposure to water, or some other current carrying medium. Hope this helps!
Can you use vfd on a farm duty motor with start up capacitor? I was given one and wanted to purpose it fir a belt grinder.
Hi Tony, it depends. Some older drives without phase loss prevention could do things like this but it may be riddled with issues. If you're in Canada or the US, feel free to give our team a call to find the ideal product mix for your application.
Hi, if we connect motor either delta or star with vfd what are the differences between them
Thanks for the question. The difference between wye or delta configuration is how voltage is expressed across the windings and thus how current is taken from the supply. The motor as a system sees a different voltage, as the delta rating is lower than the wye rating but the windings see the same voltage and current. Essentially delta/wye allow you to connect different supply voltages to the motor while expressing the same voltage across each individual winding. This is what allows for 230/460V dual voltage motors. Hope this answers your question, thanks for your comment.

Great video! Give us a video with info about brake resistors no one talks about them
Will do! Added to the list.

If you run the motor at too high speed, its torque can decrease to the point when it can't maintain rotation and will straight up stop completely, coils will draw too much current and damage VFD and themselves, potentially causing fire. Also if you run it at really extreme speed, and this motor is large, its rotor can just tear itself apart, causing massive destruction to whatever rotor's debris hit.
Thanks for your comments. Here's a video on how fast you should run your motor and why: czcams.com/video/skEaxx5YJbI/video.html
How to select the right grease? Thanks
Always consult the manufacturer guidelines, as they may recommend a specific grease.
Thankyou
How would I know if a motor is of a SRM type? WOuld I need a special VFD for such motors?
SRM motors will generally be labelled on the nameplate. They require specialized drives to function.
How to remove "frozen" brush cover on a 1940's Black & Decker circular saw?
What do you mean by 'frozen'?
@@emotorsdirect The covers that much be unscrewed to remove the brushes will not turn to the point that trying hard will probably break the plastic slot.
Great video! Thanks. I put together a little strobe light kit back in the '70s, and the first time I tested it, a capacitor exploded. (Maybe I put the wires on the wrong terminals?) Darn thing never worked, and no one in my family suggested we replace it after a careful look at the schematic. (To be fair, there were shreds of paper *everywhere* inside the box. It looked hopeless.)
Thankyou sir
Thankyou so much sir
Glad to see that IEC motors are available
Can I use a vfd with a synchronus servo motor, ignoring the encoder feedback?
Yes, as long as the drive is rated for the underlying motor type.
Thankyou sir

@@emotorsdirect Welcome
can you import an IEC motor from Europe?
You could in theory, but we can typically find an IEC motor in Canada or the US.
I have a question for you. I have standard 110 in my garage and I have a 3 phase motor I want to use on an old drill press. The motor is manufactured by “Brown & Sharpe and its 3 phase Alternating current. There are nine, all painted black, wires protruding from the motor. Three sets of two have been twisted together and there are three left alone. Their numbers are 1, 2 & 3. The motors information plate on the exterior of the motor shows that it can be wired 208-220 or 440. Under the 208-220 it shows the following: 3 lead motor 1-2-3 6 lead motor 1-2-3 6-4-5 9 lead motor 1-2-3 7-8-9 4-5-6 So, can my motor support the use of a VFD and if so how do I wire it??? Is my motor VFD compatible? If so, how do I wire it???
Unless the nameplate has some reference to VFD or inverter rating, it is unlikely the motor is rated for VFD use. However, some non-rated motors just happen to be built with inverter grade magnet wire and can function just fine under inverter power with the carrier frequency set low. Unless the motor is somehow uniquely valuable, throwing a VFD on it will restore operation. But this might burn out the motor. A lot of motors made these days are VFD rated, but since it's an older drill press, it's hard to say. Most VFDs will come with a wiring diagram that will walk you though how to hook up the motor.
Hello, is there a VFD that works with dc booster pumps, batteries and solar panels during power outages.
Hi Yusuf, we have a variety of dc-dc drives on our website. As long as the batteries put out the correct voltage, the drives will work just fine. www.emotorsdirect.ca/controls/dc-drives?input-phase=DC
Would this video be helpful in knowing if you can use pulse width modulation with a motor? I think its an analogous situation. New to electronics, please help
