The new kid on the block | THYPOCH Simera 28mm f1.4 ASPH
Finally a new lens for the Leica M system that excites me. The Thypoch Simera 28mm f1.4 is truly a special lens. It nails the value proposition and I think it has a really unique character that you likely won’t find in any other 28mm f1.4 lens for the Leica M mount system. It’s so rad seeing a company try something different and I hope more manufacturers take a page out of Thypoch’s book.

@@FrankDavalos Very sad.
Hi I'm not sure if an old video like this would even get anymore reply.. But here it go.. So I've tried all camera brands, lost tons of money in the process naturally. Last Leica I've tried was SL but with manual focus lens, other Leica was m240. Currently I'm using Canon r8 and some L series zoom lenses, as well as an old Fujifilm xt1 that I'd never sell. To be quite honest, I'm colorblind. I don't think it's that severe, but during one of those "number behind some dots" tests, I've failed a couple. I've just discover this like 5 years back and I'm like 35+ years old 😂😂 how come I can come to realize this? It was due to my wife (she's a doctor) always complains about photos that I've edited. She always claims that the colors were off, or that this or that doesn't look good, and even saying that the original from the camera looks better (this hurts the most 😅). Then she's jokingly said that I might be color blind, and we did a test that night. I was kinda shocked but to cut the story short.. I now just sticking to the tried and true method of editing a photos from my Canon and Fujifilm based solely on her approval of color temperature/white balance. So far so good until I'm left with wanting more. I feel that I gel better with b&w since I'm not afraid that I'll get judged over my choice of color. However with the pressure of family events, quick result turnaround demanded of me to be posted to social media by my family members, my desire is gone, or more like killed. They won't need a artistic b&w photos, they only need a good looking color photos to be shared for everyone to see. I feel like my inner photography need is starving and neglected. It was the same when I shoot with leica m240. The focusing was quite hard, and there was no wifi to directly send the images. So important moments got lost due to misfocusing and all that. Sorry for the oversharing, I just want to share my inner feeling to someone else that also cares about camera/photography (no one in my family is). However, this thought came across me to sell all of my Canon gears and buy Leica q2 mono. Shoot color with slowass AF, 10 years old fuji xt1, and the rest is my selfish needs. Do I dare to make the trade though? Sigh.. Probably not.. Anyway great video and insight! You're living my dream, photography wise.. Please share if you have time, on what's your family reaction toward you shooting only b&w. Thanks again and cheers
Hi mate, thanks for watching! That is wild that you just discovered you’re colour blind now haha, but better late than never. I would say that my immediate family doesn’t mind at all about photos I take of my family in black and white. All these years later and I still shoot the Q2M all the time. Fuji sounds like a good option for you since they have nice film recipes that sort of bake in a look, and the need to edit is minimal. Ever thought about upgrading your Fuji system?
@@FrankDavalos wow.. Thanks for replying. I thought I'd never get any reply tbh.. I know right? Looking back, Sometimes people see something (in color of course) and said that it's beautiful when I don't see anything good about it.. Maybe it's due to I'm missing some color information 😂 That's really nice to hear that your family don't mind you shooting in b&w. I think I ought to have 2 cameras in any event (but this means weight and clutter). At least 1 for customary photo gathering/session, the rest is candid using the b&w.. Or something like that.. The hassle though.. Sigh.. Another thing that I'm struggling though, even though I will be shooting (b&w) for myself, it'd be nice to have someone else's appreciation for my photos too.. But it seems that my immediate family doesn't really care about b&w.. 😐 As for Fujifilm upgrade, I'll pass I guess.. I've tried xt2, xpro 2, xs1, and gfx 50s mark I. Other than the gfx, I don't feel that I'm getting much improvement in terms of picture quality. I feel it's still the same images, and if anything the image coming from the xtrans ii (my xt1) is much more organic to me, thus my reason on keeping it forever. I also kind of giving up with Fujifilm's autofocusing ability. I feel that from what I've seen online, even the latest one aren't to the sony/Canon level. My kids are too small to be able to tell them to stay still, at 2&6 years old, decent AF (continuous) is still going to be my need. Thanks for the reply again!
Tim's the best
He doesn’t suck
I have to disagree. The build quality is far better than any Voigtlander
That’s cool that you’ve had every Voigtlander lens… 😉

Its unfortunate that there are many lab to print piezo Monochrome pri t or platinum print.Only seei g it in monitor is wasting the range a monichrome sensor could render
Nothing to justify.... i did... it's a lovely machine.. just use it and enjoy it!
If it's your money the only want you need to justify is your wife and in my experience you need to do it with a 5000 dollars leica or with a 100 dollars Canon f1 so fuck it, just enjoy
Muy buena consejos hermano
What's nuts is this lens is made by the Chinese cinema lens company DZO. Gonna be cool to see what else they come up with! Would love to see their version of a small compact submicron alternate! little 28mm f/2
Yeah man! I’m sure they’ll make it. Just love to see more alternatives!
Great video Frank! I love the passion for your photos and your family. Cheers! Keep shooting bud.
Thank you for watching and for the kind comment 🙏🙏🙏
If they threw a 50mm F2 on it, i would sell my kidney and buy one instantly....
Great video Frank and really sensible comments and philosophy. I have a Q2M and as you say it is an amazing camera.
Thank you so much for the nice comment and for taking the time to watch 🙏
The ricoh really is just the perfect camera for taking everywhere even if you aren't planning to shoot, it's actually annoying how useful it is
I owned a Q2M for a while. I just didn't bond with it for a few reasons. The most frustrating thing was the AF. For a camera that costs as much as it does, it's just bad. Not just compared to flagship cameras, but bad compared to just about any digital camera. For as much as Leica charges for their cameras, they should have A1 quality AF. What you get is A7 quality AF. The biggest deal breaker for me, though, was that the image quality was overhyped. Yes, images are a little cleaner at high ISO. However, I didn't find the lens to be crazy sharp. The sigma 28mm 1.4 is sharper wide open than the Q2m was wide open. I realize that's a much bigger lens, but you can also pick one up these days for $300-400. You also mentioned the lack of USB charging.
To each their own my friend! Thank you for watching 🙏
I purchased a M10M and 28mm Summilux. I also have a M10R so it’s the best of all.
You found what you like. I’m jonesin’ for the MP myself. In all seriousness get your cholesterol checked. If you have oily/greasy skin you may have too much lipids (fat) in your blood. I started eating better and my cholesterol went down and my oily skin went away.
Haha thanks man! I’m back with the MP believe it or not. Just have a special connection with that camera. I eat really clean man, but I could always probably drink more water!
@@FrankDavalos wowsers. Well now you know. I myself like to have the light meter handy. You can always take the battery out if you want a “MA expirence”. :-)
@forgottenamericana my battery is dead all the time 😂
I have a Leica M3 and M5 and went through the same thing, having two cameras with lenses and CLA’s at a total of 4,000.00. I gave up on justifying. A Leica is a good machine and will last a long time! Get out and shoot that sexy camera! I also went through justifying my Hasselblads and 4 lens kit of over 5k! Why justify just shoot photos. These are lifetime cameras!
With Leica model versions…, I used to say ‘it’s the little things that matter.’ Or, at least help justify this or that camera ;-) Any M-series is great, and for most of us as non-professionals, enjoyment of using the camera is important, and helps motivation getting out and using it. The MP is a great camera. A nice finder, a meter, and general feature set, and design that is classic. What’s not to like? Well, maybe the price, but if you can afford one, why not?
Amen! And years later I still adore my MP and it’s my favourite camera to use
Probably my favorite lens for the M-system ! (I use it on a M11) , Thanks a lot for the video and I really enjoyed your diaporama, the little sound and the photos were great ! It actually makes me think again about trying the Analog M experience, because I really felt the difference of feelings by looking on the film photos versus the digital. I mean, the digital are great, but there was a little something on the film ones :)
Thanks for watching and I really appreciate the kind comment. Analog always wins!
Kern used a similar depth of field scale for Bolex 16mm movie cameras. "In 1950, Kern-Paillard introduced a new line of lenses with a unique depth of field scale, termed "Visifocus". The Visifocus system consisted of a curved scale, indicated by a series of orange colored dots that appeared or disappeared when the diaphragm scale was stopped up or down. The dots provided a visual reference of the depth of field for different focus settings at each f-stop."
That’s amazing! Thanks for sharing Rick 🙏
Love the idea of it but that performance issue sounds bothersome. Also I wish there was more details on how it handles 8-bit footage. Seems like reviewers mainly have shown it with 10 bit footage only
There has been several updates since this video so I want to put together a new review on what it’s like in use… and I’ll def keep the 8-bit in mind! Very thoughtful idea
Before you read my comment ! This is meant positive. My view is not against this video. I love these videos. I have a Leica M6 with two lenses. I love my Summilux-M 1:1.4/35 ASPH the most. Camera and lens from around 1995. I fully understand people dig deep into all sorts of pros and cons with different kinds of things they want to buy and are confused. I do the same thing with different things. BUT - some things - as the M6 has had a very long life with pro photographers. Yes - some things get better….but how important are they ? I just want to make people calm and remember how many years of use these cameras has gone though. How many great photos photographers has taken with Leica cameras. Maybe you need a lightmeter - maybe not. A bigger or smaller viewfinder. Maybe a dial could be bigger - smaller. I prefer a dial that STOPS !!! You know where you are when you do street photography. Sorry - here I had an oppinion. I write this with a positive attitude - and hopefully in a good tone. Hope people understand it is meant in a good way. If you have the money for an old M6 - buy and old M6. It`s wonderfull - I know. Forget about the new one from 2022. Probably very good and expensive. Having a Leica makes you happy. Even with a very old one. That`s in a way what I want to say 😊 A lot of kind regards Jesper - Denmark - with almost 35 years with an old Leica M6 🥰
Perfectly reasonable comment! The M6 is likely the most iconic camera of all time, and for very good reason. Nothing I could ever say will take that away from it. I love the M6! Thanks for watching and for the thoughtful comment!
You are wekcome. I love it too and it seems you understood my comment in a good way 😊@@FrankDavalos
you have really nice teeth!

did you edit these photos at all? or are these photos all jpegs
The colour ones are probably slightly edited and the black and white ones are likely SOOC.
I like the black paint on MP, and the silver dial in MA. How , lol ? Also, I find the single leica engraving on top of Leica mp is too plain without traditional 3 lines engraving, I rather remove engraving to be honest. I bought MP recently but start thinking about getting a Silver MA. By the way, a MP is enough is trade for MA, how did you also trade your M6 + MA for MP ?
Can’t go wrong with either man! I agree I like the silver ISO dial
Great video. Made me smile. I have an M9 and I also say I like cameras AND photography…but mostly cameras.
Thanks for watching mate! 🙏
such a waste of time
DR Summicron is the most accurate lens that Leica did. It's all 52.0mm in focal length. All are well calibrated than any other Leica lenses. I did bother having it converted to use it on my M10P and Monochrom, despite some people blame me have it converted. I am very happy to shoot a lot of nice photos instead of leaving it in the cabinet as collection. I have Chrome Summilux ASPH 50mm too, I feel it is to heavy for me to carry and I seldom use it for daily shooting. I did get the Summilux 50mm V2 too, it is a very balance lens with some characters that I like. I think this isa good lens worth a try, amazing color and sharpness.
Well, perhaps they didn't get a sample... is that the chinese knockoff called thypiksbch? I loooove that brand.
That raw, fully mechanical experience of the M2 is why I won't upgrade to the MP. The MP I feel is still too blingy because of the black paint and engraving and even the light meter takes away from the purity of the camera. The M-A has been calling me for a few yrs. 😂
Everything you want is the MP my friend.
