Mark Dancer - Anacrusis Music
United Kingdom
Registrace 21. 03. 2020
This channel contains (principally) video recordings of the Sunday morning organ voluntaries I have played St Peter's, Petersfield, Hampshire (UK), where I am Director of Music. Some early ones were made at home during Covid-19 lockdown on a Wyvern Minuet; later recordings made at home are on my Viscount Ouverture.
Here is the specification of the St Peter's organ, made by Lammermuir organs in 1991:
The lowest manual is a coupler manual, i.e. there is no Swell to Great coupler.

Albinoni / Giazotto – Adagio
The famous Adagio, purporting to be based on musical fragments by Tomasi Albinoni (1671-1751), has only the most tenuous of links to him. It is almost entirely the work of the composer's biographer Remo Giazotto (1910-1998) and was composed in 1958. Its title in full translates as "Adagio in G minor for strings and organ, on two thematic ideas and on a figured bass by Tomaso Albinoni". Who made the organ transcription that I am playing, I do not know - quite possibly Giazotto himself, as there is no other name on the copy. It's not bad as pastiches go, and it is certainly popular. Whether it does Albinoni's reputation any good (or otherwise!) is debatable, though it does draw attention to a somewhat neglected figure of the era.

Paul Hindemith - Sonata II, 2nd Mvt
zhlédnutí 50Před 19 hodinami
Paul Hindemith's three Organ Sonatas date from the late 1930s and are perennially popular with organists. Hindemith's musical language is like no other composer's and that is probably part of the appeal. Unusually for a non-organist, his organ works are well-written and idiomatic for the instrument. This attribute applies to just about everything he wrote for whatever instrument and shows true ...
Noel Rawsthorne - Trumpet Tune in G
zhlédnutí 85Před 14 dny
There's a bank holiday coming up, so a trumpet tune to celebrate. This one by the renowned Liverpool organist Noel Rawsthorne (1929-2019) comes from a book of ten such pieces published by Mayhew around 2015 and is the pick of the bunch. Does exactly what it says on the tin, in A-B-A form.
Guy Bovet - Schmücke dich (Deck thyself, my soul, with gladness)
zhlédnutí 64Před 21 dnem
People rave - and rightly - about JS Bach's setting of this chorale in his Leipzig set of chorale preludes (I recorded this in November 2023, if you wish to listen). Here is a much plainer setting by the Swiss organist and composer Guy Bovet, which is to be found in his Nouveau Cahier de Pièces d'Orgue, published in 1993. Bovet was born in 1942 in Thun and is still composing and giving concerts...
Handel - Minuets from Music for the Royal Fireworks
zhlédnutí 348Před 28 dny
Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks (HWV 351) hardly needs introduction, but suffice to say, it was written in 1749 for George II in celebration of the ending of the War of the Austrian Succession and the signing of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle in 1748. The Minuets are the final two movements of the suite, following on from La Réjouissance: first the one in D minor and finally the one in D ...
Franz Schubert - Adagio in C (D 459a)
zhlédnutí 64Před měsícem
Here is a beautiful slow movement by Schubert. It comes from a set of five piano pieces of which the first two make up the short Piano Sonata in E (D 459). This one is the first of the remaining three, which in the event have no actual connection to that sonata. This Adagio lends itself well to the organ as you will hear. Also to be enjoyed is the kaleidoscopic key changes from about the half-w...
Anon - Purcell? - Voluntary for Double Organ
zhlédnutí 122Před měsícem
Anon - the most prolific composer ever. There is only one source for this piece, which is a book held by the British Museum dating from the 1690s. It has no attribution and has been variously ascribed to John Blow and Christopher Gibbons, but I think that, judging by some of the left hand figuration and so on, it could possibly be by Henry Purcell, as it is reminiscent in places to his Double O...
Tchaikovsky - Canzonetta (Violin Concerto, 2nd Mvt)
zhlédnutí 104Před měsícem
Tchaikovsky composed his only violin concerto, Op 35, in 1878 in Clarens (Switzerland), where he had gone to recover from the depression brought on by his failed marriage to Antonina Miliukova. Joined there by his composition pupil Iosif Kotek, who was also a violinist, the two played Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole together, a piece which may have inspired him to compose his own concerto. The secon...
Jehan Titelouze - Magnificat Secundi Toni
zhlédnutí 106Před měsícem
Jehan Titelouze (c. 1562/63 - 1633) was a French Catholic priest, composer, poet and organist of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. He was a canon and organist at Rouen Cathedral. His hymns and Magnificat settings are the earliest known published French organ collections, and he is regarded as the first composer of the French organ school. The Magnificat settings, which would have ...
Herbert Howells - Master Tallis's Testament
zhlédnutí 114Před 2 měsíci
Possibly the best-loved of all of Howells' organ music is "Master Tallis's Testament", one of the Six Pieces for Organ and dating from 1940. It is at once reminiscent of Tallis's era and yet unmistakably Howells. Essentially it is a theme with two variations, in the sombre key of G minor. It builds from only one or two stops through to a tremendous climax on nearly full organ, before a final co...
JS Bach - Prelude & Fugue in A major BWV 536
zhlédnutí 298Před 2 měsíci
This is one of Bach's earlier preludes and fugues, probably composed when he was in his twenties. The prelude has an improvisatory feel to it, as though Bach was simply enjoying the sound of the instrument in the building. The fugue is one of his most lyrical and legato. It lies under the hands and feet well and is in almost constant quaver movement, especially from around two-thirds of the way...
Eric Thiman - Improvisation on 'Crimond'
zhlédnutí 73Před 2 měsíci
Eric Thiman (pronounced Tee-man) was born in Ashford, Kent in 1900 and died in 1975. He was one of the leading Non-conformist organists in England. He was largely self-taught, was awarded FRCO in 1921 and his DMus in 1928. From 1930 Thiman was Professor of Harmony at the Royal Academy of Music, going on to be Dean of Music at the University of London from 1956-1962. He was a prolific composer, ...
Matthew Camidge - Concerto in G minor
zhlédnutí 99Před 2 měsíci
Matthew Camidge (1774-1844) was the second of a dynasty of organists who held that position at York Minster for 103 years, from 1756 to 1859, four generations in all. He was chorister at the Minster and then at the Chapel Royal under James Nares, who was the predecessor at York of Matthew's father John. John died in 1803, whereupon Matthew took up the reins until 1842. He was a favourite of Kin...
Elgar - Chanson de Matin Op 15 No 2
zhlédnutí 73Před 3 měsíci
Here is something which needs little introduction. It is the second of two pieces originally for violin and piano, the first being, unsurprisingly, Chanson de Nuit. The two pieces were published in 1899, although their date of composition could be as much as ten years earlier. Elgar later orchestrated them and that version premiered at a Promenade Concert in 1901. Chanson de Matin is by far the...
Handel - Organ Concerto in D minor HWV 309 3rd Mvt (Allegro)
zhlédnutí 336Před 3 měsíci
It's been a while since I recorded anything from a Handel Organ Concerto, so here is the final movement, Allegro, from his Concerto in D minor HWV 309, or Opus 7, Number 4, or simply, the tenth concerto of his sixteen. This is music that Handel reused - as he so often did - originating in his Harpsichord Suite HWV 428 published in 1720, where it was marked Presto. The Opus 7 set of concertos wa...

Bravo! Well done for managing the page turns yourself as well.
That was the least ‘evil’ edition of the three I possess as far as doing one’s own page-turns goes!

Fantastic work, I got surprised and I'm grateful of this music
It isn't surprising that most people have one or two favourite compositions from various composers. There is so much beautiful music to be heard, and so little time in today's world to listen to it all.
Thoroughly enjoying this. Thank you for sharing.
Love this! The first time I heard the Radetzky March was by Andre Rieu, and I was entranced.
Wonderfully played! This is one of my top 5 Bach pieces. As a rock guitarist, I respect anyone so much who can do this
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.

beautiful - so refreshing to hear it correctly with the anacrusis. thank you!
What stop or coupler lock the manuals together like this and does it change the finger pressure required to play?
The bottom manual doesn’t have any stops at all: it is called a coupler manual and does exactly that. The result is that one permanently has Swell separate (top manual), Great separate (middle) and the two combined at the bottom. You are right that it makes a difference to finger pressure - in effect three times the pressure is needed, but the upper two sets of keys go down slightly staggered, so as to make it possible to play. For this reason, the coupler manual is slightly lower than a conventional bottom-of-three would be.
I love it!
Different, but enjoyable
Nice music

Listening to this for wedding music, great job!
This is beautiful 😊💯🔥
Bravo!
A perfect example of music that shouldn't be played on the organ.
No reason why not. Besides, in the Baroque era, music was frequently played on whatever instruments were to hand.
Love it! Thanks!
😊❤
This piece deserves to be better known. I just played it as a closing voluntary for a school Easter service.
It would be useful if it were mentioned who this organist is... 🙄
There’s a clue in the name of the channel…

Wow…visible coupling.
Yes, it’s fully tracker action for manuals and pedals.

I’m intrigued why there is a fluffy Koala on the right of the console…..
He was found ‘orphaned’ on the floor beside the organ bench one day, so got adopted! Called Ken.
