How to drive in the USA - A tourist's guide
Add cold water if too hot.
This is the first time out of a s#1t load of videos where the person correctly says that you can turn right on s red light after you've stopped and made sure the way is clear! (Unless there's a sign saying no turn on red) Thank you.... unfortunately there's way to many of my fellow Americans that don't quite grasp that rule.
Hi, does anyone know if you rent a car…if they include these mandatory pieces
Thank you for making this video
Thanks so much for this! We are thinking about putting wood fired hot tubs in at our glamping site but I think this has put me off!
Despite everything, it was fun. Good for glamping not so good for home reckon.
About the fuel type thing, Short response: everything that looks like something you Brits are comfortable with driving in your country is going to be gas or electric. Long response: You don't need to know the type of fuel your car has if you're a tourist. There's no way a British tourist is going to be renting a Ford F-250/350, A Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra (they're the same vehicle with different names) 2500/3500, or a Dodge Ram 2500/3500. The only diesels that normal people with a class C license can drive are those, and they have names like Powerstroke, Duramax, and Cummins. They're also all the big monster pickup trucks you Brits like to make fun of Americans for having.
Interesting. Lots of small & medium sized cars in UK are diesel!!
@@aguideto....8738 Diesel is used in the "a--hole trucks" and that name is a guide to gas station etiquette. Some gas stations have a diesel pump all by itself and others tend to have it next to a gas pump. Don't block the diesel pump if there are other gas pumps because it's likely the only diesel pump. The term "a--hole truck" should probably give you an idea of who drives them... Also, you RENT cars in the US. In the US, we only "hire" PEOPLE. If you go to a US car rental and say "I want to hire a car" they'll say "this is not Uber." Get used to saying "highway" because Americans don't know what a "carridgeway" is. Some intersections have red arrows, that means "no right turn on red" and a green right turn arrow means "turn right without stopping." And then there are left turns: a simple green light means watch for cross traffic and yield but when the green arrow appears, it's a "protected left" as in you have full right of way. Also also, about pedestrian signals: Go only when you see the walking white guy. When you see the "talk to the hand" symbol with a countdown number next to it, it means you have that long to get all the way across.
LED headlights don't need deflectors.
Thanks for the guide mister.
Sita Ram! Hare Krishna..
US road signs follow a color scheme. Red and white are regulatory signs, red being restrictive, yellow = warning, orange = construction, green = navigation, blue = info about points of interest such as rest areas, airports, etc. It should be pointed out that while diesel being green and gas being black is the most common color code you'll find in the US, fuel nozzle color is not actually standardized. At least not nationally. So, keep that in mind and always double check. The gas nozzle is almost always next to the buttons for unleaded while the diesel is next to its button. Once you get out of the city and the highways go down to two lanes in each direction, then generally you keep to the right and pass on the left. Many states actually have laws for this. Only really once you get into a city where you may easily have 6 lanes of travel where that goes out the window as you need to put yourself in the lane that takes you to your destination. I should also mention a common road feature for surface streets is the "center left turn lane" A single lane defined by two solid yellow lines with two inner broken yellow lines. It also sometimes has left turn arrows for both directions of travel. It is used by both directions to pull in, out of traffic to make a left turn. In some states, it's legal to pull into the center left turn lane from a parking lot to make merging into traffic easier.
Good content, but what happened to the audio level? I can hardly hear a word!
Merci mille fois, mon ami.... I haven't driven in France since we joined the we get their speeding points club. I can remember being flashed at 110 (Mph) on the N154 avoiding Paris around 15 years ago. Oo la la!!
if you have a modern BMW you can switch lights over from right hand drive to left hand drive in the settings, no need for stickers, never knew that I suppose being nosy sometimes pays off when playing around with all the cars features
Amazing! Never knew that!
@@aguideto....8738 yeah, you need to go to external light settings :)
We had one on holiday!! Same 😂
If your in france in a right hand drive car and on a country road you will have trouble seeing round the car infront to overtake. Also be prepared to have a car a few feet off your rear bumper. Also if your in the centre of most towns you need to give way to a car coming from a street on the right..That is also in like supermarket carparks. I would say giving way to the right is the most important. There are still some roundabouts that if you are driving around the roundabout you have to give way to the traffic coming onto the roundabout i.e. the most famous being the arc de triomphe. 12:42
BEWARE I was stopped for speeding shortly after leaving the ferry, banned on the spot for 6 months, driven to a cashpoint fined £80, license confiscated, and never returned, if you are caught whist banned it's up to £3500 fine and up to 18 months in prison. Don't be blasé please, I was fortunate the car was not impounded, and luckily my wife could drive and we continued the journey!
Wow. That’s harsh. Thanks for sharing.
Just drove up from Rouen to ferry at Dieppe today and the amount of British cars flying pat way over speed limit
We used one on holiday and thought exactly the same!!
Great review thanks
I fiited those headlight converters...and someone stole them on boat...
Oh no!!!!
Thanks for this information I watching from Sweden 🇸🇪
Just in case, we now have something called a "diverging diamond"... This allows freezer flow of traffic with a basic two direction traffic signal cycle... These are used at motorway/ surface street interchanges... Yes, the traffic on the surface street changes sides in the interchange!!! Make sure to pay attention to the signage...
I am going to clear a few things up: right turn on red after full stop is legal in most places, unless signed otherwise... A left turn on red is also legal in a specific circumstance, where two one way streets meet (where the left turn would not cross any extra lanes) if not prohibited by signage... A diesel pump handle won't fit into a modern petrol powerd vehicle due to design... Most ICE vehicles are petrol powered... In the USA, petrol is known as unleaded or unleaded gasoline at the pumps... E85 is up to 85% ethanol, which is not compatible will all petrol powered vehicles... Generally, if the fuel cap is black, it's petrol powered... Yellow caps tend to indicate flex fuel, which includes unleaded and E-85, but not dirsel... The law requires slower vehicles to keep to the right when not passing, exiting left, etc... (Occasionally, signage can be found requiring large trucks to use the left lane for various reasons) This is why undertaking signage does not exist... in urban multiplane settings, one of the middle lanes is fine to travel in Whith the speed limits, usually, but not always, 5 over will be ignored... "Five over, you are fine, but nine and your mine" says the speed cop... I hope this helps...
Will the car rental company supply the vests and warning sign?
Good question… I’m unsure I took my own car over. Anyone else on here know?
Very helpful! Thank you for the video
Marvelous....quanta energia uau,,,,,,😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤

Thank you for posting this. I have been exceptionally anxious about going to America on a road trip. You have reassured me.
Thank you! Have a great time.
How do you ensure you’re in the middle of the lane ?
At first I turned both wing mirrors down so I could check I was within the white lines. But within an hour or so I didn’t need this, you quickly adapt to sitting on the ‘other’ side of the car.
@@aguideto....8738 interesting. I was in the passenger seat the other day, and I was observing how the white lines pass with respect to the "corner" of my side of the windscreen, and I realize it's the same distance as the white lines passing the opposite corner (when I'm in the driver's seat). I think that will kind of be my guide :)
very helpful video thanks
Thank you! 👍🏼
Renting a campervan and driving from Phoenix - LA - San Fransisco next month and I’m feeling nervous about it (I have driven in Florida before, but it was at night on an empty highway), but I hope this video can really help me!
Have a great time!
Really helpful video, under rated in my opinion
Thank you!
Been living in Arizona for 12.5 years and I NEVER go anywhere without water. When I go hiking no matter what time of year I always decide how much water I think I’ll need then double or triple it. For most people it’s probably tripling it and then adding a couple more, because my initial estimate is overkill to begin with. Carrying a heavier backpack is worth being safe here in the desert. Fun fact: an arizona law states that if you have extra water and you encounter somebody with none/not enough you legally must provide them with water (no more than you can give them without jeopardizing your own safety, of course). Road trips here in Arizona are incredible - a trip from Phoenix to show low through Payson is probably my favorite. Flagstaff to Payson via lake Mary rd is also very pretty, and the Hualapai mountains in northwestern arizona is an underrated location. I appreciate you driving the speed limit! So many people here go 10-15 or more mph over the speed limit and weave recklessly through the lanes, and it drives me nuts. Also, I had no idea in the UK people get out of their cars to talk to the police, that’s quite interesting. I haven’t been pulled over but I’ve always heard that if you do get pulled over like you said you don’t do anything threatening and show them respect and are compliant they show you respect back. It’s also quite difficult to get pulled over here, you gotta be doing something pretty reckless 😂 so I wouldn’t worry too much about the police. I always feel safer when there is a cop around me. Anyway, after watching part of your video it seems you are probably a safer driver than most locals, lol! Regarding rest areas, I actually prefer to stop at a travel stop, such as a Love’s or a TA. Very nice clean facilities, they all have showers, bathrooms, shops, and gas stations, that way you can combine your rest stop with your gas stop. Search on maps “travel stops” then the name of the town and they come up everywhere. I do find however that they are mostly along the interstates not the state highways, so I usually find myself stopping at a grocery store along the state highways when I get to a town.
That’s really interesting thank you!! I can’t wait to return to Az!!
Great vid! Halfway through a US road trip (Seattle to Vegas) and only just learnt about the "4-way box". Crazy that the car arriving first has priority! 🤷🏻♂️
Thank you for this great video
Practically about roundabout : keep right lane with left signal as long as you're rounding.... and right signal when you exit.
Actually only put the left signal if you intend to go left! If you go right put your right indicator before entering the roundabout. If you go straight : no indicator before entering. And always put your right indicator before exiting the roundabout. PLEASE DO NOT put your left indicator if you’re going straight. This new fashion is not only confusing for other drivers but it doesn’t make any sense !!
@@LittrowTaurus it make sense : if you dont exit, you explicitely keep rounding.
@@northerngannetproject3147 but why the left indicator if you're going straight?
@@LittrowTaurus not straight, going left passing each Y. A roundabout can be seen as a circular pile of Y.
@@northerngannetproject3147 ??? I'm not sure I'm following you
Great video very interesting going over to France in July you say shops are closed on Sundays is that the same as petrol stations as well👍
Many Gas stations are located on supermarket parking and are 24/24 with CB visa. All gas stations on highway are 24/24 but very expensives... avoid them.
That’s great thanks for the reply 👍
You'd be very unlikely to hire a diesel car in the US, or anywhere outside of Europe. Diesel cars are not common outside of Europe. Here in New Zealand you also wait in your car if you're pulled over by the police. If you try to get out they'll yell at you to "STAY IN YOUR CAR!" because it's the safest place for you. It's common to pass on either side on multi lane roads here too or pass someone on their left if they're waiting to turn right.
Being born and raised in the United States, I can’t even imagine driving on the wrong side of the road and the steering wheel being on the wrong side of the car all that crap. Lol that would be the weirdest thing ever to experience for the first time! L O L
Very helpful!
Love the countdown on temporary road works why can that not be done here in the UK ?
1:47 Are you aware of the anglo tendency to mythmongering? Probably not - you are making yourself culpable of this habit. The simple fact is that bringing one's car to another country (not only inside Europe, but in fact all over the world) is based on the rules of a UN convention, the one covering road traffic, made 1968 in Vienna - look it up. According to its rules, your car must comply with the rules of *your* country, not the one you visit. As this convention is based on reciprocity, the same is true in the opposite direction. (We're talking here about temp import, not a permanent one.) It is possible that a french cop might not be aware of these details, but if he tries to fine you, confront him with these facts, and he will must probably back off. If not him, then the office that sent him out, once written to them
You're right but it's useless if the cops don't know that... most don't.
You need to fight it through. If you have the knowledge and the motivation (and a minimum of linguistic skills), you will succeed. This principle is true for all countries on our level, and even a few others. Ceding to ignorance is plain wrong. All you do is aiding and abetting a relapse into barbary. @@northerngannetproject3147
It's not that simple. That convention covers the car itself. I. E. That it's roadworthy, have proper indicators, seat belts and whatnot. It does not cover driver behaviour, nor what you are required to keep in your car, nor what you are banned from having in your car. It's only the vehicle itself.
We did talk about the car only. Please check again. And the convention covers also driver rights and duties @@foresthobo1166
Some cars (my Skoda Enyaq being one) has a configurable speedo which is user-changeable from mph<>kph. Very useful.
some states like Florida have a law that you need to move lane to leave a lane of separation if there is an emergency vehicle on the hard shoulder. Make sure you do this unless you want to be fined massively
Diesel cars are almost unknown in the US today. There were more in the 80s and 90s. Diesel is for large pickup trucks, delivery vans, and big 18 wheel trucks.
Hey I just wanted to share how your video nearly caused an accident. There’s major points you missed that I wasn’t aware of until the heat of the moment, having prepared myself with this video and 1 other who I’ve also commented on. 1. Pedestrian crossings with flashing lights means stop. How would I have known, nearly smashed the car in front. 2. Middle lane is for turning off the road. I didn’t know and stopped in the fast lane and nearly got rear ended 3. Yield if left arrow is flashing but you can go if clear . I just stopped and froze, got honked at.
Due to Brexit 👍 Speeding tickets DO NOT FOLLOW YOU to the U.K.! The French authorities do NOT have an agreement with the U.K. to get your details. However, this gentleman is correct about French Police and speed limits.
For bread, all bakeries in France are open on Sundays ... What a silly idea to want to buy bread in a supermarket when in France? ;o)
If you come to France with a British vehicle, just remember to drive on the side where your driving-wheel is = on the right-hand side.
Funny how they say everything in America is bigger. although this doesn't extend to the speed limit signs😂
Driving in France is an absolute pleasure, been doing it for 30 plus years. The French understand lane discipline unlike the half wits on UK motorways. Don't use a satnav, use a Michelin map and see the real France !!
The autoroutes from Marseille to Calais are mostly a dream. From Marseille to Italy, not so much. That's when my stress levels rise, and where people become more aggressive. As soon as you get to the UK the road noise, and sense of claustrophobia is also annoying.
