    There was a crash of an RCN Hawker Sea Fury on approach to Shearwater after WWII. The wreck was beginning to catch fire. The pilot could not help himself, he was mostly uninjured. The first responder found a good sized rock, & used this to make a hole in the canopy. The first responder said the difficulty level of this was very high. Luckily the pilot barely escaped. The canopy of a Hawker Sea Fury is not made of garbage, not really accepting one of these knives would be up to the task of smashing an escape hole in a canopy as ruggedly built as that, esp. from the inside when everything is twisted after a crash. The pilot's name was Sub Lt J.V. Searle - one of the lucky few RCN Fleet Air Arm pilots who lived after a Sea Fury crash. The first responder: Lt Douglas A Muncaster. Steady boys, steady. The knives are very handsome. As others have said a great deal of research went into the design, not all the design choices are blatantly obvious. 😊

    I've had mine for close to 5 yeears....zero problems ! I keep the clip snapped in just behind the head... that keeps it in spot mode. I don't have to reposition the clip for flood, just shove the head back, and the clip gets shoved back onto the knurling. ( i didn't do that early on, so the knurling on mine is smoothed / worn down some...on a new one, i don't know how well it would work )

    The polymer sheath has a belt clip and a built in pants or a coat button hook . To secure the knife a bit better , secure an ‘O’ ring to the clip and around the handle . The spline is ground flat easily with a die grinder . Morakniv knives are very reasonably priced and are of a quality build . I prefer the carbon blade .

    I have several of these HX5 and owned the predecessor HP1 as well from Coast. The only issue I had with the HP1 was after 3 years daily use the switch threads stripped since the threads are non hardened aluminum. No other issues. There is no need for a groove on the HX5 for the clip. The clip can not slide off to the back over the red ring and can not slide onto the checkering. So one step of processing less and less price for the consumer. The Coast LED bulbs never burn out or fail. I go for MagLite and Coast only. The flood is actually more usefull than the focused beam. I live on a farm and for snakes sake. You wanna have an wide flood light for spotting snakes early. I run these exclusively on rechargeable NiMH batteries. One battery lasts about 1 hour of usefull light. The momentary off/on switch was one of the reasons I chose Coast. And the fact it has only on/off and no other fancy stuff.

    • @NGMonocrom
      @NGMonocrom Před 11 dny

      You don't have to limit yourself to Maglite or Coast. LED emitters have lifespans that even with heavy use, you aren't going to reach their limits. For all practical purposes, LED flashlights don't burn out. If an LED emitter does, something went horribly wrong.

    Just to put it in perspective from the UK where I live, because some watching this may think that the small Classic SD is the only blade we can legally carry, it isn't. We can also carry 91 and 93mm SAKs as the blades conform to our laws specifying that these must be non-locking, and under 3 in long. We can also carry a lot of other nice folders like the Spyderco Urban, Byrd Tern, Manly Wasp, Bokerplus Atlas/Tech Tool and many more...those 4 are some of mine. In fact I mostly carry a 91 or 93mm SAK but I bought the Jetsetter to fly overseas with. But after that it will give my UK legal folders a new lease of life, as it will complement them perfectly.

    Just ordered the 1C and 1D. Agree with some of your points for sure. 30 and 300 lumens makes more sense. And that AA plastic carriage looks to be awful quality. I bought mine for about $30-35 so at that price I think that’s great. I don’t think they’re comparable to the cheaper plastic lights, in an emergency, camping situation, durability is very important. Another point, this can take from 1.5V to 6V, that means with some ingenuity you can run a single AAA, single AA, 14500, or other lithium batteries. Making this a very versatile light. And no irony with it running brighter with 4 AA. That’s 6V as opposed to 1.5 with a single D. Lastly, I find the beam to be okay. Ceiling bounce and you have a nice area light. Tripod mounting is a nice but no necessary addition. Put it in a tripod, put a white boot at the tip and you have a lamp. Also I do like more throwy lights for emergencies as you can do more with less lumens. Which again makes your comments on a lower mode to be a really good point. This is just one addition to a bigger lightening kit. It has a nice spot in my kit. If this was your only light, then your video makes a lot more sense and I agree, you can probably get two other lights, maybe single or double AA. Thanks for the videos and opinions!

    That latch is shockingly bad design. A long thin piece of hard plastic being pulled out of the way of that long tooth is 💯% guaranteed to suffer from elastic fatigue within a dozen uses, if not less - not only that, it also hampers the insertion of the batteries. A spring-loaded toggle would have made way more sense, and it would even allow you to lock it into an unopenable position. Wouldn't even cost that much more, either. The reverse orientations on the batteries is a necessary evil. This torch's circuit has the batteries in series, so they need to be connected end-to-end to work. To have the batteries in the same orientation, it would massively complicate the internals. (Technically you could have the batteries in parallel, but that would require a boost driver with a design that goes way beyond the scope of a cheap outsourced single-mode torch with loose tolerances.) You may not be focused on the exact name of the emitter, but the XP-G3 is infamous for its bad tint, as most of Cree's small die emitters. Nowadays only their XHP product line seems to be worth any attention, and I never see commercial-grade AA/AAA lights running those. Very sad that this is one-mode. With a tiny bit of extra driver design, it could've had a nice lower (±20 lumens) mode by holding the button. Missed opportunity.

    That "junk tool" has got me out of several pinches at work. I work at a location where I'm not allowed to carry a knife or multi-tool with a knife. I keep that "junk tool" in my wallet. People scoff at everything until they have a need for it. The "junk tool" and the Minute Key multi-tool key have served me very well as my EDCs.

      Get a Gerber MP600 Blade-less multi-tool. If that's too big or heavy for you, You can get a smaller Gerber MP400, then dremel off the blade feature. You'll still have a pair of scissors to cut things. You can do the same thing with smaller keychain-sized multi-tools that come with scissors and a blade. Just dremel or cut off the latter.

    Just picked up a Companion in SS to compliment my 511c. Thanks for explaining the differences. As you've said, the Comp is is just a refined version of a 511 setup.

    I bought a Sportsman recently and it's become my go-to EDC immediately. The new version has the ridged file rather than the emery board style one, and I think that's better than the "old" one. It's an absolutely brilliant knife in every way, and it rarely leaves my pocket!

    Good review. For $30, this is my favorite light right now, love the UI. You can throw it to turbo with your thumb pretty easily. What do you think of the KLARUS dual switch lights, the 360X1 or the XT2CR?

    • @NGMonocrom
      @NGMonocrom Před 3 měsíci

      Far too easy to hit the secondary switch. I don't recommend those models. Also, I had a catastrophic failure with my Klarus XT2CR in which not only did the LED literally fry itself, but the battery became dangerously hot. Should have recorded what took place. But instead threw the light out, and later on properly disposed of the battery. Replaced the light with an Acebeam P16 Limited Edition Defender model. Thermal protection on my Klarus failed miserably. Tried to get in contact with them through their official website. But no luck there. I have several Klarus models.... and now I don't trust any of them.
