Durability of Acrylic Intumescent Coating
This presentation was made for an online AMPP conference called FireCorr21. This case study shows how an acrylic intumescent should be selected to protect steel structures located in a coastal environment from cellulosic fire. It evaluates the merits of ISO 12944 with reference to Intumescent coatings and provides details of the benefits of using EN 16623 as a standard for intumescent coating system. It explains how ISO 9223 was used to determine the corrosive environment of the location the building was located at. it helps provide clarity on why water based intumescent should be used in a C4 environment and how a solvent based intumescent tested and approved to X category as per EAD 350402 shall only be used in a C4 environment.

Difficulties in painting hot dip galvanized steel - Part 3
zhlédnutí 46Před měsícem
Painting Hot Dip Galvanized steel is fraught with difficulties. We need to ensure that the surface is free and grease or oil and ideally carry out sweep blasting to roughen the surface. Ideally a surface tolerant epoxy primer that is compatible with galvanized substrate should be selected followed by a polyurethane top coat for colour and gloss retention. Avoid the use of alkyd coatings directl...
Difficulties in painting hot dip galvanized steel structures - Part 2

Hot dip Galvanising is not a very environmentally friendly process. The pretreatment includes acid picking that can potentially allow the ingress of hydrogen ions into the steel structures leading to hydrogen embrittlement also known as hydrogen induced / assisted cracking. The zinc bath also limits the size and shape of the structure to be galvanized. Other defects on the zinc layer such as fl...
Difficulties in painting hot dip galvanized structures - Part 1

Hot dip galvanizing is specified in many projects for structural steel to provide sacrificial corrosion protection. The specifications typically also call for additional layers of coating to be applied over the zinc layer to provide barrier protection. This is a very outdated method with many inherent practical application difficulties. Issues such as hydrogen embrittlement, lack of coating adh...

False Body effect in solvent based acrylic Intumescent coatings.

It is very common to observe that solvent based intumescent coatings seem to have a cake like appearance when the can is opened. The coating appears to have picked up viscosity and difficult to spray. Once we mix the paint with a mechanical stirrer the coating returns to a sprayable condition. This phenomenon is called False Body Effect
Typical Fire affected building

Steel loses its strength as the temperature increases. Buildings constructed with steel have a risk of collapsing during fire and trapping the occupants who are trying to escape. Therefore, it is important to protect the steel buildings with active and passive fire protection. This video shows how a building that is not adequately protected against fire will collapse.
Correct Packing of yard applied intumescent coated steel sections

Transportation of intumescent coated steel structures has been a major issue across the world especially for solvent based acrylic intumescent coatings. This video shows a good method of packing and transporting steel structures that have been coated with acrylic intumescent coating at the yard. It is also very important that the correct overcoating intervals are followed. Hempafire Pro range o...
Failure of Water Based intumescent coating - Another example

The use of water based intumescent coatings is widespread in the Middle East and South Asia due to its competitive loading. But it’s use should be restricted to C3 internal environment. But we very often see Water Based intumescent coatings used in other environments resulting in their failure. This video shows one such application in the Middle East with high humidity in the summer months. The...
Trial application of Hempafire Pro 400

Hempafire Pro 400 has been applied at 500 microns DFT, 750 microns DFT & 1500 microns DFT in 3 sections. Solvent based intumescent coatings such as Hempafire Pro 400 offer an exterior grade Fire protection along with corrosion protection. This video shows how Pro 400 can be applied at high thickness of 1500-1600 microns DFT reducing the number of layers needed to achieve the required film thick...
Failure of Water based acrylic intumescent coating

This video explains how the environmental conditions such as proximity to the sea, exposure to humidity have led to the failure of water based intumescent even though it was covered by a polyurethane topcoat. It is very important that we use the appropriate intumescent coating based on the microclimate that the steel will be exposed to. Water based acrylic intumescent coatings should never be u...
